Every time someone posts here saying that they spotted a giant moth in their house, I think it's cute. Like y'all get so excited over a baby nope, I imagine you scream like high school girls if you get to see the fellow nopes here.

Every year, between May and August, they pay a visit. For the first few days you will randomly see one or two wandering around, you will get really freaked out, take out your phone, snap chat that thing, grab a broom, poke that thing to make it fly out the window and when it does fly, you flip the shit out of yourselves, start praying to Jesus and consider calling a priest or two. And more of them come. At this point a priest can't help so you might want to burn your house down. But they are in the lobby, on the trees, in your classroom, in your toilet bowl, IN YOUR BLOODY SHOES.

After a week, you kinda accept them as part of your community because you can't burn the entire nation. Oh I forgot to mention the wing span, didn't I? Just 16cm (roughly 6 inches), nothing much. And they are attracted to light. I live on top of a small hill, very quiet at night so the moths come to keep me accompanied, so nice of them. I even got a frequent visitor and I named him Theodore. I found Theodore lying lifeless outside the corridor 2 days later.

After 2 weeks, when you are getting used to their present, time for a motherfucking invasion. In 2014, you see a giant moth every 5 steps you take. Don't believe me? See it yourselves at your own risk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0j7INpqufgI&t=3s

Too bad this was taken in Malaysia, our neighbour. Couldn't find the similar photos taken in Singapore which can accurately reflect the density of moths. Trust me, it was this baaaad. Baby moth, mommy moth, daddy moth, uncle moth, grandma moth, grandpa moth, THE WHOLE FUCKING NATION OF MOTHS.
They are harmless.

Pictured above is the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, definitely a top-notch one with an infinity swimming pool. And yes, that's a ship on it. Interesting architecture indeed. Rumour has it that this ship is Noah's ark, we hop on if shit goes wrong. In that same bay area, we have a lotus-shaped art museum and a floating stadium. Floating stadium babe.

We live on an island, surrounded by seawater with very very limited source of drinkable water so gotta import shit ton of water from Malaysia, the only country we are connected to by a bridge. Drinking water is sacred holy water. We live in constant fear that one day Malaysian government doesn't feel like selling us water anymore then DAMN, we are thirsty as hell. So thirsty we got this water recycling thing called NEWater which works very well.
So thirsty we drink our own piss.
But seriously, the technology used here is amazing

People here are smart and creative. They possess top technology and skills. So when the island is getting a bit too crowded with an influx of foreigners, they expand the island over time. We don't experience extreme natural disasters such as earthquake, tsunami, vocational eruption, flash flood, so it's pretty safe to live on reclaimed land.

But can you sleep peacefully at night, knowing that the ground under your feet CAN collapse, even if the chance is very slim? And you sink into abyss because you have no where else to run to. Pretty sure in such occasion the bridge to Malaysia is down as well. Better use the Noah's ark. But hey don't let me worry you, I have irrational fears :)

This is the biggest irony. Singapore is well-known all over the world for her cleanliness. Amazingly clean with no sign of trash, very large green coverage, drinkable tap water, etc. Usually the PSI is at a low 30 which is very rare for such a developed country.

In order not to make the country perfect, we get haze due to forest fires every year around June or maybe later. Joke on us, we don't even have forest. The highest PSI recorded was 401 in 2013. Every other year the index stays at 200 or so. It's compulsory to use N95 masks whenever we are outside, even if we just walk from a classroom to another. Schools for lower grades are cancelled. Everything is moved into rooms with air-cons. Those with asthma are certainly at risk.

The one on the right is the beginning of it and the one on the left is doomsday.
Have you ever burnt a huge pile of leaves and the smoke kinda smother you for a moment so you quickly step aside? WE CAN'T FUCKING STEP ASIDE. It's like we shove our faces into the burning pile even more.

You can look at more comparison photos here http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/singapore-indonesia-haze-interactive-before-after-photos-show-dramatically-reduced-visibility-1521643

Beside uniforms, there are other school rules in the handbook give to students at the beginning of the year. You might laugh at some them, thinking that nobody would take such rules seriously. That's where I was dead wrong when I got my silly ass registered in government schools.

School girls' hair fringe should not touch her eyebrows, might as well don't have one. If you hair touches your shoulder, tie it up. Nothing remotely outlandish, just a pony tail or a fish tail. And the schools are very particular about the colour of our hair ties. In all schools I went to, including junior college, they must be black or blue.

Skirt hem better touch the ground when you kneel down. Socks must cover ankles and in my case, they must be white. Shoes must be white as well. Of course no double piercing, jewellery, etc.

These rules ain't extreme, just very strictly followed. It's a not a very conservative country, just neat and organized.

I was 14 when I first came to Singapore for better education, spent 7 years there, went really deep into the culture and lifestyle. Have seen things. I'm telling these stories as both an outsider and an insider.

Let me know if y'all want more.

So it's the Malaysians to blame for your sweet water. It tastes sweet. Really made me drink more beer while I was there.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like moth, I've never come late.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had similar school uniform rules when in primary school, in secondary school they let you do more with your hair - nothing crazy though.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One girl once came in with bright platinum blonde scene hair, it was black the next day. Also in primary school underwear was uniform'd.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Moths freak me the FUCK out! Triggered!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've been there. Very clean place but very very boring.

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 3

The degree to which life is controlled there makes me feel like the whole place is soulless.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I had a blast and never ran out of things to do

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was similarly there not that long ago. Great city for food and a launching point for other places in south east Asia.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Mostly due to alcohol being expensive. But pleasant enough there.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow this is a lot to take in, im gonna read this later. Those moths look huge btw!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

More more more please. I'm obsessed with Singapore and this is gold. Even want to move there at some point in my life.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They don't sell tampons or gum, very anti gun and you can get caned in public.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Those aren't moths, those are birds.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

How does a floating stadium work especially with it packed full?

9 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 1

Blitzball.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Technically only the platform is floating, the audience area is on land. But its capacity is still quite amazing

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

Next time can you post pictures of Singapore instead of the same one over and over please?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Platform for the athletes? Or is it a bridge type deal?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Boats! How do they work?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Viva vietnam!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wanna go visit now. But if you don't have forests where does the haze come from?

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

fucking indonesia

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Forest fires in other countries in the region. The haze travels all the way to us

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Also probably China or Thailand, i've heard the smog over in Thailand and especially China can get unbearably thick.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Nevermind, i just checked to make sure i wasn't mistaking Singapore for Indonesia or Malaysia. I was.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

@OP Are there job and living opportunities for a well-educated european in Singapore? I've heard both good and bad things, and I'm curious.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean it's pretty much all bankers and giant conglomerates so if you work for one of those then probably.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But be aware it has the highest cost of living of anywhere on the planet. Except maybe Zurich or Hong Kong or some odd African city.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah, Singapore. World's cleanest and most successful dictatorship. +1 you crazy sons of bitches.

9 years ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 1

If it's not because of such government, we would remain being a fishing village

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Wait. It's a dictatorship? I should pay more attention in history class.

9 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Not paying attention? That's a caning.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They only have one political party, but they are just right of being centralist. It's worked for them and their people since 1959 so why not

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

I think it's call a benevolent dictatorship, only a couple countries have been able to pull it off.

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Still dictatorship, tho... then again, those folks need ships due to the water.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pretty much correct. There was a bunch of racial tension, so dictator made different ethnic groups live together and beat them if they didnt

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Now they get along great.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

As a Singaporean that was born here and lived here for 28 years, you make it sound like a nightmare. I don't think that's the case.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'm sorry if it came off as such. This is just how I see it and I didn't think it's a nightmare, rather very interesting.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No offense taken here. Just that from the outsider's POV, it seems like a living nightmare lel

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just think that it's amazing how the government manages to overcome the odds and makes it a great living place
