There's a lot of variation in beliefs about what happens in the mean time but the end result is usually a resurrection of the body once the Messiah is crowned.
Catholics have kept a version of this with their reverse-rapture. Since Jesus didn't actually do any of the prophesied Messiah stuff in his life he's eventually going to come back and do that and everyone will return to life then for the events of Revelation.

Interestingly, I also found that having a central holy text, the Bible, had a high correlation with greater religious violence.
