Walmart was the first thing I thought of when the tariffs were announced. If he follows through with his stated plan to put an enormous tariff on Chinese goods, Walmart will be one of the most directly impacted. Also, I would assume that the Walmart shopper demographic is incredibly heavy with MAGAts.
Most of the price increase is going to be profit marigin increases. And all of the extra profit is going to the pockets of the owners and shareholders, the low/middle class workers aren't seeing a penny because "We need to save money due to tariffs!".
Trump has been in office 0 days and put forth 0 tariffs as of yet. Any price increase prior to the PASSING and IMPLEMENTATION of tariffs is pure price gouging bullshit. And, yet, they will get away with it just like they did post-covid because they are the only even remotely affordable game in most towns.
"It is a shame, but these 30% tariffs are going to cause 50% price increases within a year, maybe 100% in two years. A real shame." - Every corporate exec right now
I definitely think that a lot of corporations profit margins are going to go down, but I think that's a dice roll they are happy to take. If their income taxes and other regulations go down then they will have a bigger slice of a smaller pie, which they are fine with, then they can buy up more of that smaller pie so that they own even more after it recovers over the next several years.
And once those prices go up they won't give a shit. They'll blame the Deep State or trans people or demon kangaroos. They'll come up with any excuse instead of looking at themselves and how stupid they were.
Not for long. Trump plans to close the tax loophole that lets Temu (and now Amazon) to buy a million things for under $800 bucks each to avoid tariffs. Plenty of articles about it if you do a quick google
I saw several companies have already stated if they get tariffs, the consumer will bear the weight by massive cost increases, especially car parts, clothing and shoes.
How long before retailers "cushion" the rises of Trump's tariffs with preemptive tariff price increases so Republicans can blame Biden? Everyone wins right?
"Company that has been gouging Americans for decades and reporting record profits says it will continue fucking you over" -fixed your god damned headline
Well they don't HAVE to raise prices, they only have to do it if they want to maintain their ludicrous profit margins while still fleecing their employees from getting livable wages.
It's not about money for the ultra rich. It's about power, and they feel powerful by hurting others. It's about the gap between them and the "others" and once you get a certain amount of money, gaining more money does little to widen the gap, so your energy is spent pushing the others down instead. THAT'S why they all support Trump. They know he'll lose them money, they also know he'll make the gap much wider.
Take one step farther back. They want prices to rise. They will raise prices. They don't want to get blamed for it. The tariffs are at worst going to make it necessary and rightfully take the blame for at least part of the rise, and at best are a convenient excuse for it that most people will accept.
oh they are very PLEASED the price is going up. They can tack on extra and claim it is tariff. Item cost 5 bucks, add 2 dollars, of which 50cents is tariff increases. Trust you me, all of the big brands are gleefully rubbing their hands together during this, cuz it means MORE of anyone out there competing with them have a much harder time staying in business. Walmart, amazon, etc, can easily absorb the costs and pass it onto the consumer(plus some extra just cuz fuck you that's why)
I'll translate it further for you: "Which means we are ABSOLUTELY raising prices no matter what happens, cause what are you or your government going to do about it? You already showed us during the pandemic: Fuck all. So fuck you, deal with this shitty excuse, and give us your money, bitches."
Subway raised their prices to $6 6inches thinking they could get away with that, then they had an emergency meeting to bring their prices back down because they learned that no they couldn't get away with that; now watch, watch all of these places raise their prices again and again and again. As far as they can and claim 'oh no, tariffs, whatch ya gonna do'
Except all the companies and all the industries are conspiring to raise prices. They'll call it "inflation" or "because of Trump's tariffs" or whatever other flimsy excuse the feel morons will buy. And even if they don't buy the excuse, they'll still do it. Because they can. Because no one -- including you, oh so heroic consumer -- is going to stop them. Or stop buying their shit.

I imagine that the refrain will be,"it would have been way worse under Kamala."

The WALTONS support Trump and republicans, they DGAF about the shoppers that go to their stores.
opermech
Everything Walmart sells is made in china.
azzabat
I’d put money on companies raising prices regardless (of tariffs) just to increase their profits, but claim it’s because of tariffs.
ImprovedLoungewear
...as opposed to increased prices because they simply want more money.
Stop going to wall mart.

Doesn't matter, they'll never blame Trump.

I bet they make sure they happen well in advance - like when Biden is still around.

Even if the tarriffs are not enacted, the prices will go up, and the Magatards will blame the democrats.
unfortunatelynotdeadyet
I’m Sure all of your wages will increase 20% any day now to account for this.

Walmart gets 72% of their products from China. Amazon isn't much better
Hovencl00f
Some things are much cheaper from Temu than Amazon.

Translation = the poor won't be able to shop here so, even with massive corporate tax cuts, that will cut into our record high profits

It could be "slower increases in profits for our shareholders" but no, that can't possibly happen.

Casually
Duh, the question is will businesses wait until the tariffs go into place before raising prices.
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
My guess - a little bit now, and even more after.
Casually
20% of what the tariffs will cost now, 90% of their cost when they go into effect. Perhaps more later.
wythra
better give some big bonuses to the board of directors then!

Hahahahahaha hahahahahaha
DarkRedCape
And some fucking how, it’ll still be Biden’s fault.
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
Why didn't Biden stop this?!?!
RetrogradeLlama
After most of the Walmart clam supported Trump.
They don’t care the prices are rising – they just want to make sure that they don’t get blamed for it.

They’ll just raise prices way more than the tariffs so they can make even more. Win win win
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
I think you mean win win lose (with the losers being the consumers, again).
