Life has been stressful trying to figure this month out. I just want my cat to eat a bowl of his food but the bugger has decided to strike. Cant afford new food, he has an expensive food and a cheap food. Wont touch either now. Eats his treats like he is starving instead of just happy. I dont want to lose my cat because of circumstances beyond my control. Im about to bust out that rent money and get my cat some food that he'll probably turn his nose at but ive gotta try something right? The money i can replace at the start of next month. My cat? Not so much. Advise?

Smell is a really big part of appetite in cats. If they can't smell it, they're just not interested. Are the treats especially stinky? You could try crushing them to powder in a plastic baggie, then sprinkling them on the food. I also have had luck with liberal drizzles of tuna/anchovy juice, and spiking the food with a few bits of ham.

Try soaking your cats dry food in a bit of meat broth before serving. If it’s a wet food you give them, try warming it a little before serving. Could also try changing your feeding location. Cats are weird yo.

What's the background music in #7?

I’d advise taking him to the vet, but in the meantime, *that* he eats is more important than *what* he eats. If he’ll eat treats, then just give him a bunch of treats. Maybe try getting food in the same flavor as his treats and see if that works. There are also things like flavor enhancers that you might try.

Someone had luck adding a little catnip to their cats food to get them to eat. We have a really old cat that isn't eating much but he will eat fresh tuna or pork we made for ourselves. Seemed to really like the tuna/mayo made up for sandwiches. Good luck!

#6 Every time I see this it makes me cry laughing. I wish it had more pixels though.

#6 what spamming a special move in a fighting game looks like.

Try getting some canned tuna fish in oil and drain the oil and water over the dry food.

#5 who has trouble opening up babybel cheese? Honestly I find the packing for singles is way more risky and prone to tearing apart your "cheese".

UPDATE: I dont know how to update a post with information so here it is in the comments i do apologize, removing the point, but my boy Charlie has eaten a portion of the soaked food i prepped for him earlier! Ive a few food experiments to try to see if he'll like his old food more since theyre smaller pellets but im just happy he ate! Ill do smaller quantities while experimenting and i wont leave food out for more than 4 hrs. He usually eats in morning so after i figure out which one he

Likes the most ill start giving him a routine. He usually has food just available and ill do my best to make sure he has fresh soaked food available most of the day and not leave soaked food for more than 4 hours

It's not just you. I nose-sprayed coffee all over my keyboard. The headbutts finished me off.

Feels like a video game where you keep spamming the one special that breaks through a block.

I miss Morrowind…

It's still here. With OpenMW it's even better.

There's even a mod being worked on to add the entire rest of Tamriel to Morrowind

What kind of treats does he have? Try mixing a few of them into his food, see if you can trick him into eating that way. Or get a can of tuna and put a few pieces of that on his food, or mix a little of the juice into it. Unless he actually seems to be losing a lot of weight or is acting ill, just wait it out. He’ll eat eventually (my cat stopped eating much for a few days but eventually was like okay fine I’m hungry).

He eats the temptations treats just fine, i tried mixing them into two different foods still nothing. Im at the point of just getting him some wet food but he usually just licks at it. I think it has been a week to 5 days and he is moving slower/ his hips are starting to be pointy. Its hard to tell on him because he has a tuft of fur under his belly. Only way i noticed something was up was his bowl being still full after days. There is a mouse in the house that has his attention though.Amworried

Im going to try soaking his food in water, then if that doesnt work ill mash up the dry food into smaller pieces.. though his first food was already in small circles, guess just not small enough?

Talk to your vet. As I just posted, if he's merely being picky, he will eventually cave and eat the food even if it's not his favorite - I have experience with this. If he's suddenly absolutely refusing it, that's a huge red flag.

More importantly – Temptations treats meet all the nutritional standards for regular food so he can live off them. My wife's cat had a long and vibrant life eating nothing but treats after she left her with her very, very doting parents. Give him a full bowl.

If you make his food wet maybe warm it up a but too, get it extra smelly and appetising

No cat has ever starved to death, just let it out. If you're on the 4th floor I can see how that may be problematic. I wish you well

That is terrible advice. Domestic cats are a blight on natural environments, in particular song birds and small rodents like voles.

In Europe cats have done any damage they could have hundreds of years ago, alongside humans. No difference at this point

Is this based in any evidence or are you just wildly speculating, because this sounds like abject nonsense.

We've had cats the past 25 years, all outdoors. I've not once seen news talking about cats causing actual issues here (Netherlands). Also, if you don't want your cats outside, don't have them. They shouldn't be locked up.

Im on the 2nd floor and he usually is scared af to be outside or transported anywhere. I think he cant chew the pieces. He tried on the new food i just got him but he was failing to break up the larger pieces. Imma try soaking it in water, if he doesnt like it wet ill try mashing it into smaller pieces

Give him his old food that he used to eat, soaked if need be. We had the same problem of a picky cat once, the vet straight up told us "If she's eaten the food before, she'll eat it again. Just keep some out for her all the time, she'll eat when she's hungry." No animal has the self-control to starve themselves to death over a preference – you can easily break their strike.

This all assumes there's no other problems with him that would keep him from eating, of course.

Should i give him a choice between the three or would that overwhelm him? Ill set out some of the old food dry, wet, and crushed with treats, see if he likes em. He may also be distracted by a mouse in the house. I think i noticed a small sore on his front paw which has me worried. Im sure he was eating the worlds smallest amount of the old food maybe i can get his attention with crushed treats/ crushed pellets or beef broth.

I just caught him munching on the soft food i soaked earlier, i was just getting ready to pitch it and get him a fresh bowl of the old food, ill pitch the old soaked food here in about an hour or two and replace the old soaked food for fresher soaked food and give him a choice between the new and old. Really hoping he goes back to the old since it is healthier but im just happy if he eats! Thank you for your help

It sounds like he's got a dental issue that's causing eating hard food to be uncomfortable or painful. Keep soaking the food and get him checked out when you can. I don't think he needs choices, just a softer food that's easier to deal with for now.
