If im remembering right, what had happened was her oven got set to Celsius instead of Fahrenheit and so instead of the actual cooking temperature it was cooking at like 200 above what she thought it was.
At my last apartment a new couple moved in across the hall and knocked on my door in a panic. Their oven was too hot and they couldn't open it. There was a burning smell but not enough to trigger the smoke detectors. Turns out they somehow activated the self clean mode while trying to cook a pizza. They oven self locks when the temperature is over 400 or so. We unplugged the oven and told them it would unlock when the temp comes down.
I recently learned that self-clean-mode is a thing when solving a problem on my inlaw's oven. It's a 4400W oven (so almost 20A on a 230V~ supply) on a 16A fuse... House was build for them and included the kitchen, so no botched-up DIY project of my FIL ;) Door locked sometimes too and would trip both the fuse and the RCD. Turned out their specific model didn't even HAVE self-clean... Found the error (expanding materials due to heat caused a short to ground sometimes) https://imgur.com/mP9UnbM
A residential 230V 20A circuit fuckin terrifies me. I just would not trust any electrician not to fuck this up and burn my house down around me in my sleep.
