I can guarantee someone in a math department somewhere got a PhD for this.

When you see that it's off center and then you can't unsee it

What have you done

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Post is accurate, can't unsee .... thanks a lot.

I hate you

I was about to say exactly this.

This is based off of work done by Jin Akiyama, who also has fantastic hair. https://youtu.be/RLNH8-sGXKw

All these squares make a circle!!!!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of the odd shaped colored blocks we would play with as kids and make standard shapes out of them.

Wow, we just went full...triangle?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd be interested in one that has the vertices marked so we can see how they track.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This agitates me immensly

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only thing not satisfying is that it's not centered.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How did someone even think of how this would work? Like what's the thought process to know where to draw the lines and rotate?

8 years ago | Likes 439 Dislikes 3

We did stuff like this in middle school, actually. Also had to make up abstract shapes that fit together perfectly to fill a poster-board.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's simply a combination of interest and intelligence. A lot of things that seem difficult are.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The same way someone thought to play "Dark side of the Moon" while watching "The Wizard of Oz".

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

With algebra you can describe the answer you're seeking without knowing it precisely, then work backwards. That's why algebra's cool.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

It can be trial and error but there's also an algorithm. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinged_dissection

Math. And I know nothing about it..

They're huge nerds. Not nerds like you and me. Useful nerds. Nerds with educations.

8 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 1

Nerds who do this are nerds with maths degrees. Their usefulness can be argued.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am a nerd with an education. I am not a useful nerd in the slightest, however.

Can't people with severe autism just see this and comprehend it pretty easily? I thought I read something about it... I could be wrong tho

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

*autistic dissecting*

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A lot of it is just trial an error. Sometimes they get computers to do that. Sometimes they can mathematically prove the possible solutions.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Not sure which one it was in this case. Probably a bit of each.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Dudeney's Hinged Dissections. The guy is a long-time puzzle maker and mathematician, so he's probably made all manner of cool shit like this

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm sure it's easier if you start with the square and work from there.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

basic geometry. at least we had this shit in school.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Well first you find the total area need to make the three possible shapes. Once you find that, you can start breaking apart the shapes1/2
