At first glance of the thumbnail I thought they were baby birbs. Here are some baby cockatiels to compare.

They do look really similar!

That poor mother
HoneyBunchesOfStoats
when first born the quills are soft and covered in a protective membrane, you can see shreds of it on them in the first pic
Iwanttofingeryou
untrue, their quills at birth are soft like an average hair folicle and harden later. these are 2 weeks old

This is so against the lexicon OMG! Love it!
Chill, snowflake. I know what mommy told you, but you don't have to be special *all* of the time; your pronouns are a unique enough lexicon!

So the mother gives birth and then dies ?

These aren't newborn newborn hedgehogs. They're a few days old. Here are some pictures (one of the ones in this dump are from this site):

The first pic it just looks like they have pieces of wood shavings stuck to their quills. Like bedding for a nest or something
upon squinting at it for a minute I think you're right, good catch!

Apparently the quills are covered by a thin layer of skin before birth.

Oh thank christ, the idea was making me physically cringe
FarkasMacTavish
Amniotic sac, more likely. Just like any mammalian birth. Also headfirst, so the quills wouldn't catch.
TenaciousDream5
Oh you smart smart huh?
RabidDingo
No breach births ?
CaptainHedgeHog
It's actually closer to a thin layer of skin. The quills literally poke through several minutes after birth like they're teething
