Day # whatever of me trying to change people’s minds about lesbian geckos

Mar 17, 2026 6:28 PM

You guys have been asking for an enclosure build for a long time… and I tried to do so but for some reason all my text disappeared and they’re pictures now, not videos?! The fuckkkk Imgur. Brb, I’ll upload it to YouTube and be back with a link

https://youtu.be/X0xCOmMVUBk?si=Uigudkwvh1rCQGVt full video; wrong orientation

https://youtube.com/shorts/0q7ynXr3Ba8?si=nQRO6y7z1DPxuXLj and https://youtube.com/shorts/b62amRx9XvQ?si=YDwqoNjzZKwUqL3G two shorts; correct orientation

#art #nature #beautiful #mildly_interesting #gecko

Start with empty box. Box must be of appropriate size and made of glass or acrylic with plenty of ventilations

Put in a background; optional but I like to use natural corkbark to a) add more texture for them to climb and b) animals feel safer with at least one side blocked off

Fill in nooks and crannies with moss to make it look better if you cure the background slightly off. It’ll look like you did it on purpose

Put in a false bottom, which consists of 2 things: organic drainage material like leca (clay) balls or charcoal. Then top with window mesh. This allows excess water to drain so the plant roots don’t rot and also serves as a place for beneficial bacteria to grow

I use a mix of different substrate (dirt) that I make myself, but pet stores have everything from jungle to desert substrate ready to go. For newer keepers, that’s what I’d recommend!

Add hardscape: the sticks and rocks that will serve as the foundation for the enclosure. For this one I cheated a little bit- I got a piece of grapevine already seeded with epiphytes (plants that live on rocks or other trees, NOT in dirt). Hopefully they don’t die…

Add some more plants! Can never have too many plants. Geckos like having coverage and lots of places to hide and feel safe

Lesbian geckos you say?! Why yes, yes I do. These are mourning geckos, which are really cool because they reproduce via parthenogenesis ie cloning themselves! But they have healthier eggs and offspring if they have another female to simulate sex with so…

Lesbian gecko #2! First one has polka dots while she has a chevron pattern, so I can actually tell them apart :)

There you have it! An enclosure build, albeit a fucked up post. I worked hard on this too, damnit! Please check the YouTube link if you’re interested in the full process and how this post is actually supposed to be done!

I honestly didn't know before today lesbian geckos existed, let alone needed to have an opinion on them. :-)

You learn something new every day right?! lol!

Morning Geckos! ... i have video of mine eating their baby... Gotta be careful these ladies be hunters.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh I’m sure it’ll happen no matter how careful I am. I’m okay with the whole circle of life thing. I have snakes 🤷🏼‍♀️

AAAAAWWWWW she's so small!

1 week ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Yesss they’re tiny! These still have a little bit of growing to do but they’ll stay small :)

1 week ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

That's REALLY cool but you've got plants in there that grow several feet long and others that grow several feet wide.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Correct! The scindapsus is going to need to be trimmed back pretty frequently, along with some of the vining plants (assuming those don’t die). The bromeliads are supposed to stay on the smaller side but will be moved to a crestie enclosure if they get too big; I’ll replace them with younger/smaller ones. Vivariums are ever-evolving things that need maintenance and care- it’s why I like them :)

Why would have to change my mind? I'm on board. Fully on board.

1 week ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Then the title isn’t for you but the post is! The YouTube video(s) are way better- I suggest checking those out!

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You had me at - lesbian geckos.

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hell yes!

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ngl thought that was a PC case, misreading the title as "lesbian geeks" just confused me 🤦‍♂️😅

1 week ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Lmao that’s actually really funny

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You are REALLY good at this!

1 week ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hehehe it’s my job; I better be! :P Thank you- it’s always nice to know one’s work is appreciated :)))

Excellent habitat you set up. https://imgur.com/UkFVmPh

Why thank you!

The Clone Wars begun, they have.

Tiny sweet baby girls 🥰

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Whats the size of that terrarium, is it large enough for them to remain in or do they outgrow it?

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s specifically designed and sized for small colonies of micro geckos. However I don’t think I’ve be comfortable having more than 4, maybeeee 6 in that enclosure before upgrading them to something bigger.

THANK YOU!!

Amazing!

(Also, I misread 'gecko coven' as 'Greco-Roman' -- probably because of the reference above to a certain isle where Sappho lived, and wrote some lines that seem appropriate:
"For even if she flees, soon she shall pursue.
And if she refuses gifts, soon she shall give them.
If she doesn’t love you, soon she shall love even if she’s unwilling.”)

I love this!

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's a really cute setup, but it'd be way better for a jumping spider than for active little geckos.

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I love people who are confidently wrong. This is a 7x14x12 inch enclosure. It’s WAYYY too big for even the largest species of jumping spider. It’s also specifically sized and set up for a small group of micro geckos

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah, it's bigger than it looks in the photos, that's good.
But I dunno that I buy it being too big for jumping spiders, since jumping spiders live in places like "the entire wall of someone's bedroom, hiding in a potted plant to sleep" and "the whole planter box on someone's porch". Unless we're talking babies that need help finding food, it's hard to have an enclosure be too *big* for an animal. Too open, sure, but hiding places fix that.

Omfg jumping spiders ARE MY LITERAL JOB AND IM PRETTY SURE I KNOW MORE THAN YOU.

I made the mistake of getting mourning geckos... those girls are SPICY. I started with three and had a colony to rehome in no time.

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mine are so sweet! I plan on having a small colony and possibly adopting out some babies at expos. Otherwise I’m just going to pull and freeze like every other egg group.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

See, that was my plan, too. But they are sneaky girls. One set of eggs, somehow, was laid behind a background that was siliconed fully in place. Still no clue to this day how she managed it. They are super cute though. Their little croaks and chirps are endearing for sure.

1 week ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I too siliconed the background so hopefully that doesn’t happen 😂

I'll check out the YouTube video later! :D

I doubt I’ll ever be YouTube famous, but it is nice to know that people at least watch 😂 My shorts go over best

I love the idea of parthenogenesis

Do you know what the difference between a lizard and a gecko are?

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Geckos are in the lizard family but they do differ from certain other reptiles specifically called lizards. Geckos don't have eyelids, have unique vocalizations, are primarily insectivores and have bigger toes. They also have cuter smiles.

1 week ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Geckos do have eyelids. African fat tails, leos, ect have eyelids; tokays and cresties don’t. The only distinguishing feature is geckos can vocalize and lizards can’t

This enclosure is way too small for mourning geckos. This is only suitable for temporarily isolating young. Really should be 18x18x24 (inched). You'll actually see them MORE often if you give them space. For those interested, they "breed" like crazy and you WILL be over run with young. They are absolute escape magicians, particularly young. Not only are they lesbian, they are potential cannibals and will eat the young.

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Thanks; I do extensive research before I purchase any pet. I researched these for 2 years before getting them; I’m well aware of everything you just mansplained. Furthermore, how are you going to tell me “it’s too small” when you do t even know the dimensions or how old the geckos in it currently are 🤨

1 week ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Because I've been building all manner of things for more than 3 decades and your hand is in the photo........this is more than enough to tell me all three (x,y,z) coordinates are less than 12"........And not everything that offends your delicate disposition is "mansplaining"......its care and attention for animals. 2 years you say? Then youd be sharing a larger, more thought out terrarium and not an Amazon special. Your budget blatantly doesnt match your "research" investment. 'Fuck outta here.

Annnnnddddd.......youd notice I said it was suitable for TEMPORARILY isolating young and not questioning how I know the animals age. You might simply agree and discuss long term plans instead of passive aggressive responses. "Furthermore", this space is inadequate for anything other than select invertebrates. What you have, is a beautiful spider terrarium. "2 years of research" and you might know better than to perpetuate the idea this space was adequate for the species presented.
