This is my first post, and I wish it was something cheerier. This past summer, I worked for Frankenmuth Carriage Company, a horse-drawn carriage ride company in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Yes, the German town with the huge Christmas store and lots of little shops. Well, it seemed like a dream job; drive the horses, groom them, give tours, hang out next to beautiful animals all day.. but it quickly turned into a nightmare. Under direction of the owner, the horses were subjected to HORRIBLE conditions... There were four horses, all good boys but definitely suffering. The owner keeps them on concrete floors or pavement all day and all night, sometimes missing their shoes. For the tours, they are often worked five or six days a week for up to fourteen hours or more, mostly with injuries as a result of their living and work conditions.

Thrush in the hoof and a broken shoe. Still forced to work without care.

Crooked feet and deeply cracked hoof.

Scratches that got infected. All the horses had these.

More badly cracked hooves.

Driven all day missing a shoe. See how crooked it makes his foot?

Sores worn into their skin from their harnesses from wearing them days on end.

A horse named Gus in his stall. Concrete floors, no mats, and urine-soaked shavings. Very bad after a long day on the roads.

A very old horse named Adam. Ribs and hips are prominent, but he works as much as the others.

Unfortunately these images barely even scratch the surface. The owner is out of her mind, completely denying this is happening, or attempting to blame it on her staff. The treatment of the drivers that worked for her was appalling as well. Withheld pay, verbal abuse, even assault.

Not all carriage companies are bad. Horses can be treated well and even enjoy pulling the carriages, but this place is different. Animal control and the humane society are looking into things now. Please help make this place famous so this "business" is finished and the horses can go to better homes.

Update: The police, and now the humane society, the city, the Labor Department, Animal Control, and even Representative Ken Horn have been made aware of this, and they've each pledged to look into this. The local news has even asked to speak with us to help cover the story!

I will update when more happens!

Front page edit:

Thank you all for giving this so much attention! Many of you have given helpful advice and I appreciate it so much! Now, I should have clarified some things in the original post...

1: The ASPCA, Animal Control, the city, the Police, the news, and other agencies/services were contacted BEFORE I ever posted anything. I'm not looking for karma, I just want the message to be spread so people are aware of the problem and might choose to speak up against the company and not give them their business.

2: The reason I've waited so long to contact these agencies or make it public is because I had no evidence from my time working there (I was too scared to take pictures or video). Just recently, several other former drivers have come forward with these photos and some videos, so we finally felt we had enough to convince some people of the problem.

More updates to come!

I live in Michigan and visit Frankenmuth once a year, I have always refused to use the carriages. The horses look skinny, tired, and sick.

Need to report the owner to the state tax agency because if they are withholding pay chances are they are fudging their taxes too

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Hopefully animal control will help get these horses a new home and tell the owners to

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Oh no. Horses are like giant dogs and they love unconditionally. Poor babies

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Fucking Frankenmuth. I don't miss that place

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Sounds like you have other reasons

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for giving a voice to these horses. I hope they find a better home and are treated and cared for

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Fucking people man. Disgusting, and yet just part of the way of life for some places. Good on you for saying something on their behalf.

In my home town, the carriage horses only work 4 hours a day for six months then they are switched out with fresh horses

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My hometown too. These carriages are ALWAYS out carting tourists around, all year long.. I drive past them all the time... I had no idea :/

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I didn't either until I worked for them. I didn't have any photos or evidence until just recently when others came forward. Sad..

Lets further blast on Social Media, help this poor horse find a new home in the country

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I have been there, pet that white horse. I was worried about their conditions when my niece asked, "Do they work all day?" It broke my heart.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They just exposed similar treatment to the horses that pull the handsome cabs in Philadelphia. Poor things.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Sigh..

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The great thing is that a lot of places are starting to take notice and really crack down on carriage companies all over. Change is a-comin'

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

What the hell. Pretty happy about the update, though.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I live close to Frankenmuth! This is awful. I always enjoyed watching the horses on Main Street. Hopefully something is done soon!

8 years ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 2

Wow I'll never look at those poor horses the same again. Live in clio so I frequent the town often.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Me too, which is why I wanted to work there, until I found out the sad truth...

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I also happen to live in frankenmuth, my family owns a carriage company out of millington and occasionally hires drives for the day. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

They all have experience with the frankenmuths company's and say they're horrible people. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

You should see if your family is willing to go to the police and lend a voice of experience to be witnesses to how awful those people are.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Hooolyfuckingshit. I work in frankenmuth, live in bport. I know the town very well. I had no idea they treated the horsies like this.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Gatdammit! I went on a carriage ride in Frankenmuth with my daughters a week ago. NEVER AGAIN, ANYWHERE!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As a Michigander, I too have heard stories about how shitty the owner of the company is from former employees. Hopefully she gets what she 1

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

deserves, and then some. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So glad to see something done about this! Grew up about an hour from Frankenmuth and have been there many times.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Good on you for reporting. If possible, take to FB and other social media outlets to make the PEOPLE aware of what's happening. Then 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

you'll really see the ball start rolling. Other carriage companies have changed their ways when the whistles were blown on them as well 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We (myself and other former drivers) have a post going about it on FB that has been shared over 2k times now. Spread it!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I worked on mackinac island, not with the horses, but I knew many of the carriage drivers. The horses there are expertly taken care of (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

2/2 you should think about working there! Its really hard work and long hours if working with the carriages, but most people love it anyway

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Did ya show the owner the pics?

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 2

She's seen them all and denies there's anything wrong, but then blames it on former workers. So, does she admit there's a problem or no?

8 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

If the horses are still being worked and they're her horses then it is her responsibility entirely

8 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

I wonder how fast she would change her tune if she was facing the business end of a Sig/Sauer or Heckler & Koch.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Easy tiger.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"There's nothing wrong here, but if there is, it isn't my fault."

8 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

They need new owners!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a former carriage driver (Mackinac island) this breaks my heart. I hope they get sorted and the horses recover. Good for you standing up.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I thought it was gonna be someone whining about perfectly fine working horses. But this is actually disgusting. Lock em up.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

If they would have been perfectly fine working horses (and the owner wasn't nasty to us) I'd still be there. Unfortunately not the case :(

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Good on you for not putting up with it. Hope the animals get better and the owner gets charged with animal abuse.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I just don’t see the logic in abusing animals. Especially ones so intelligent and beautiful. I really hope she’s charged with something

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My mom owns a carriage company, but she's one of the good ones. Those poor babies, and oh god those feet! Thank you for speaking up!

8 years ago | Likes 128 Dislikes 2

Don’t they usually get special shoes for this type of work? Like the rubber ones? Or just super diligent farrier visits?

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

They had the rubber shoes, but they'd come off frequently and the owner would make them keep working regardless. The farrier got there

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

sometimes but often the damage was already done...

8 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Holy fuck that’s disgusting. I’ve seen some pretty ugly hooves, but never something that’s this willful. Thank you for advocating for them.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Im so angry right now, how dare she??? Thank you, and your (former?) coworkers for coming forward with this.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It's so stupid, too. In the long run she'll lose money if her horses start to fail from neglect. As someone who has worked with horses and

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

who loves them very much, thank you so much for taking action.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I hope you showed the police these pictures.

8 years ago | Likes 422 Dislikes 0

We've shown them and many more to the police, humane society, news, etc. Animal Control is sending an officer out tonight to check it out!

.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fantastic news!

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

I hope they shut the owner down and take the horses out of her "care". I worry that they'll tell her to do better and just walk away.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Please do an update in the future. I hate seeing animals suffer for personal gain :(

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Please give updates. A friend of mine rescued a horse from a situation like this.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hope word doesn't get back to them because of this post and give them time to hide evidence...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you for contacting them. Those poor babies deserve better.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I sincerely hope they send an officer with equine experience. I've seen cases before where they sent officers who didn't know what they 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

were looking at, which delayed proceedings for ages or even derailed an entire investigation. Mind you, that was in a small town setting.2/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Animal control has looked into it and found no issues with the horses or their care. I hear there will be more investigating soon.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Disappointingly, Animal Control said they found no issues, although they had no input from a veterinarian. When a veterinarian did show up,

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh that's BULLSHIT

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

it was the owner's own veterinarian, not a third party. Not surprisingly, they also gave the horses a clean bill of health. However, the

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Department of Agriculture will likely be launching their own investigation soon. We're hoping someone does the right thing instead of trying
