My happy place

Nov 13, 2021 2:21 PM

I was an awkward, intense, and shy kid. My hometown had a gorgeous Carnegie Library, which was nice because the rest of the town was a shithole. My mom worked there part time for a few years and when she couldn’t find a babysitter I would come with her to work and just sit in the aisles reading for hours. It was my happy place. Like a warm hug. Libraries save lives!
.
What do you remember of your childhood library?

I remember all of them. My school libraries. The city libraries. Especially the post libraries when I was on active and National Guard duty.

As a kid, the library was about discovery. I learned about anything my young mind could ever dream of! And then zoned out to awesome music:)

It always smelled like somebody pooped in every book

The smell and sound of moving paper books. The line for the computer, learning to read and the summer reading challenges.

Boring building. My best memory is the one time I played hooky from high school. That's where I went – the library. I am a rebel.

I grew up in an area with a high water table, so mostly I remember that it had a basement! It was full of microfilms of old newspapers!

Sounds like the library in the town that I lived closest to. Grew up on a farm and the town was 15 miles away (one way).

Huge mural of various fairy tales. Robinhood, Snow white, Alice in Wonderland, Gulliver's Travels, and probably a lot more I can't remember.

It was in the hallway to the kid's section, and it was super cool.

We had a Carnegie library too. The smell of books, the high ceilings, and the quiet. Beaver Falls, Carnegie Free Library, circa 1988.

It had a lot of skylights that were cool to sit under on rainy days. There were newspapers threaded onto long sticks in the reading area.

There was a separate card catalog in the children's section of the library. And the microfiche room was behind the front help desk.

I loved our Carnegie library. Kid’s department in the basement, the card catalogs. It’s been turned into City Hall after the old City 1/
