"And this, class, is an arcane text of the early 2000's. We have no idea what it says since it's in a dead language, but here's boobs."

PLEASE get some acid free cloth (archival/museum quality) gloves, and an archival box, to preserve. You've saved it, so preserve it! :)

Great, now you've summoned demons.

A Bible then

[1/4] It's an old German prayer book. Pic #2 has a prayer for "during the holy Easter Night" (in der heiligen Oster-Nacht), #3 is part eight

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

[2/4] (Achter Theil) with daily prayers to Christ (Gebeth zu Christo), #4 a prayer to Saint John the Baptist (Zu St. Johannes dem Taufer),

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

[3/4] #5 is the first part (Erster Theil) with Morning- and Evening prayers (Morgen- und Abend-Gebether). The etchings depict

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

[4/4] religious scenes, but aren't strictly connected to the texts they appear with. It seems to be a mass-market book for its time.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Go to the basement and read some of the scriptures out loud

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

IF YOU DARE! ????

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not going to lie. this made me check my oven for some reason. and it was on. So thanks for not making me burn my apartment down

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ok, glad your apartment still exists.

I always thought I'd find books like this at used bookstores. You know, hidden in the back, surrounded by candles and chicken bones. *Sigh*

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It was more than luck,..to find this book. The previous owner had no clue.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I can read it fluent. These are simple "Fraktur" fonts.. There's written a lot about Jesus, Hell,Heaven,Merci and praying.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Congrats! I'm a german history & paleography student and this book is a liturgical prayer book: E. g. your second pic is about easter.

This needs to be higher. WAY higher.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Would a museum want it, and would they care if i carefully cut out one page and ate it in front of the curator before handing it in?

This is "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting into Heaven" by Hans Müller. If it still has the CD-ROM it came with, it's worth about $10.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That's seriously cool!!!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The type of writing is called Sütterlinschrift. my granny "translates" a lot of pre-world war documents written in this into newer versions.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Best I can do is $3.50.

Rick: How much you want for it? Them: Well, I looked on SellMyCrap.com and it was listed for 25 million bucks.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is why he keeps coming back! Cause you payin him!

Cash or you going to wimp out and call in Rebecca again, Rick?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You called?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gothic font really looks badass doesn't it... unreadable, but badass.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

Parts are a little difficult to read, mostly due to the pictures and it's old German - I could totally translate that to English though.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's German. Totally readable.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Unreadable might have been a bit of an exaggeration, but c'mon, it is pretty hard. I speak some german but I have trouble deciphering this.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yeah, a few of letters are overly ornate.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's mostly just exposure to that kind of writing I think. Seems fine to me.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i need to go to fleamarkets more.

@op 'Novem Portis de Umbrarum Regni' written by Aristide Torchiain 1666 and based on the Delomelanicon. Only three copies are said to exist

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

That's some funny shit ruint, you've got the form down just right

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

The plot of the book is someone looking for a book where only a couple copies exist. I think that is what ruint is getting at

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wtf

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

NoVel Written by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. Film by Roman Polanski. Nice plot

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They are in a secret brotherhood of historians that save the world.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

"The Ninth Gate"; good movie, worth watching.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

What are you talking about? This book is clearly in german, in fact it looks like it is a prayer book "Erster Teil: Morgen und Abend Gebete"

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Part One: Morning and Evening Prayers

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0142688/ of COURSE that was a Polanski film

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ah the good old ceniza bros.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Whoa, that text Lovecraft wrote about the Old Ones? Far out!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, if only. But precisely the kind of thing that inspired his fictional texts! "Unaussprechlichen Kulten" and all that.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I hope this is true.

8 years ago | Likes 106 Dislikes 2

It's not. Lookup "the ninth gate"

8 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 1

I completely forgot that movie existed.

8 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

I was hoping nobody would notice before the post hit most viral :(

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

Nice try, though

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Ye, your post got ruint.

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

that needs to be in a sealed box, stat, if you want to save it

8 years ago | Likes 1794 Dislikes 16

Scan it in hires!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

pssh it already lasted 284 years. Take it into the tub. What's the worst that can happen?

8 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 1

Clean books are always better books.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

that belongs in a museum!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

U should freeze it, that'll make it last

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And fill it with argon

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And desiccant

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And away from sunlight and UV rays!

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

If not, I'll give you $10 cold hard cash

It belongs in a museum.gif

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Bound up with chains and blessed by three priests if you want to save your soul as well.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Make sure you cover it in tomato sauce to increase the umami

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

SHOKOGEKI!!!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah. And depending on who you ask, you either should or should not wear gloves when handling it. I hope I cleared that up for you.

8 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 3

For $5 I don't think he got a 'care and handling of precious books' lesson.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

If it's leather, you touch it with your hands to condition the cover, if not no?

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Leather you touch the cover and then glove up for the pages

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Archivist here. Not a sealed box. Get a box made of acid free cardboard with noncorrosive hinges (if any) to support it and keep it clean.

8 years ago | Likes 593 Dislikes 1

I want a Stories of an Archivist post. STAT

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

or sit it on top of your toilet and read it when you forget your phone. That thing will last there forever.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I want stories on some of the things you've preserved or saved.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Professional book keeper here. You're going to want to put that on a shelf with other books. Probably leaning at about a 30 degree angle.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And for all you mouth-breathers, that's AR-ki-vist not archive-ist. Not that I've ever made that mistake. In a room of 6 archivists.

8 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 1

Hmm did you have to close one eye to type that with your monacle and top hat?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haha. Married to a librarian. My friend writes library science textbooks. Dozens of librarian friends. Librarians are fucking everywhere.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Uhhh thnks dude, i was prununcing it arkfipist. Got it now tho

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not ar-KAI-vist?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The box should be allowed to "breathe" in response to atmospheric changes. Keep it somewhere dry, and use clean cotton gloves to handle it

8 years ago | Likes 245 Dislikes 1

Not TOO dry!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Support the pages when you turn them. Consider a v-shaped book rest to support both sides when open if the binding is fragile.

8 years ago | Likes 173 Dislikes 0

.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Above all, keep it safe but not secret! Let others read it too (with proper handling) or may as well not exist at all. Happy reading!

8 years ago | Likes 165 Dislikes 0

+1 for that last bit about others reading it too. History is for all.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not archivist here. I'd sell the fuck out of that

8 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 0

Historian here. Be careful when wearing cotton gloves, sometimes they "catch" the paper structure.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP TOUCHING IT WITH YOUR FINGERS. Glove up you fucking lunatic

8 years ago | Likes 393 Dislikes 26

It was only $5.....

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's quite an assumption you're making there

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I mean, the Benedictine monks who kept the book may have laced the pages with poison!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Sean Connery warned me about this.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The advice these days is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and make sure they're completely dry before handling

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

......... do you see a picture with him/her manupulate the book with hands without gloves???

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I just imagine all imagurians are neckbeards with cheers fingers

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Book expert once told me that the gloves tend to absorb everything they come on contact with and some of those things can be more harmful1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 than just touching the book with freshly washed hands. I got to touch an original folio 2 with my bare hands because of that nifty rule

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Put your.... Put your dick on it.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

How does one know gloves are not being used?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

In fact, put on a condom just to be safe.

8 years ago | Likes 127 Dislikes 4

I don't think someone should fuck books, who am I to judge... Well at least try and avoid old ones.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Books.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No glove, no love!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It was in a flea market...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Experts often no longer recommend gloves when handling books. The lack of sensitivity due to the gloves does more damage than the oils.

8 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 5

But he does need a rest to save the spine

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends on which does more damage. Wood pulp paper is best handled sans gloves, but I like gloves for cotton paper

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Even like, nitrile gloves? I have really good sensitivity with those.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

If the gloves we use in hospitals and ambulances are good enough to palpate veins, they're fine for documents imo.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's why I use Durex Extra Sensitive Ultra Thin gloves. Duh.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 2

Magnum size, of course

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Hey, I ain't no tiny-hands cheeto.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah have seen this too. Suggest rather to wash them really well beforehand and ensure they are dry.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

That + handle only the edges of the pages. Additionally, cotton gloves can trap and deposit debris on the article that's being handled.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep. Soak those books fully and let them dry out in their closed position so you know it's totally dry before you try to open it again.
