TL/DR: Lost hours at work and now I am broke.

So the story here is, I worked a minimum wage job at this same store for years. If they could pay me less, they would. Place was rife with issues and they didn’t give a shit about their workers wellbeing at all (for example, we flooded once and they made me work their lotto booth in ankle deep water with extension cords floating in it powering the system). I got the offer last January to join in as a unionized doorman. Great pay, benefits, time off, the works. The catch here though was that they had too many full time employees and could only take me on part time as a relief worker, so basically I only worked if someone else took the day off, and I couldn’t join the union until I was full time. I figured I’d take it and keep the other job, just calling out whenever the new place needed me. That is, until they gave me my schedule and I saw I was basically working full time all year, except December. Man was I happy, I worked my ass off and paid my debts, and made sure I saved money to last me December, the only month I wouldn’t be working. But then plans changed. People canceled vacations they were taking, among other things, and I lost my hours bit by bit. As it stands, I have been out of work since early November and probably won’t be back until late January when I go full time. My savings are gone so I’ve been applying for credit cards so I can use them for my bills. I’m not making this post for pity, I’m just annoyed at my situation. Thanks for reading.

Unemployment benefits also work for UNDEREMPLOYMENT. Get yourself dat gubbermint munny, yo

Apply for welfare food stamps, housing authority, electric assistance program and medical.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah, you paid taxes to pay into it. Now use it.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s rough. I’m glad your out of the other place. Sounded like they could use a call to osha

Funny thing is I called, maybe it was because we were at the height of the pandemic or something but they told me they couldn’t do anything

"We only have part time positions" and then giving you a (nearly) full time schedule is a good way to get out of paying benefits

Got a vehicle? Amzon, Uber, Uber Eats, Door Dash are always wanting people around this time of year. And drop it when you don’t need it.

Apply for a line of credit. If you've been paying down debts your bank will probably give you one.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

THIS. Line of Credits (NOT loans) are the best for emergency reasons like this

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Way lower interest than credit cards and can be used for cash withdrawals when needed unlike a credit card.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I’m in a similar boat. Left a good paying job that I hated to join a union, new boss promised consistent work but I’ve had a bunch of…

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Days off. Luckily I have savings, but never thought I’d be dipping into them while employed.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m considering going to my union rep to find a busier company. Can you do the same?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do whatever you can to not use credit cards. You can have $1000 debt turn into $10,000 just because of interest. A bank loan is better.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can we get a ‘Day in the life as a doorman’ post? Ya know, cause you got the time ;)

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depending on where you live, you may be entitled to some sort of unemployment benefits from the government.

3 years ago | Likes 145 Dislikes 0

This @OP, look up info on "underemployment" in your locality.

3 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Absolutely. We used it at the factory when they closed for the month of December every year. "Underemployment"

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Post Office. Seasonal, sure. But have had a number of friends who stayed after and are ft with fed bennies. Pass a piss test and you're in.

How rank-and-file is your union? Top-down unions are shit, rank-and-file ones like mine (UE) are pretty great.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Applying for credit cards to tide you over sounds like a bad idea and can get you sucked in a pretty bad cycle OP. Pls consider alternatives

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not sure what line of work ur looking for,but Lowe's,Home Depot,Target,Walmart, msny Ace Hardware are all hiring...1/2..

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

...2/2...Any one of those better than credit card debt

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Here's a fat penguin to improve your situation

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

None of this is the fault of the union, though. This reads like some copy-pasta put out by anti-union capitalists, tbh.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Similar here OP - left a job in July after not being paid for worked hours at weekend, etc etc. Still looking .. labour shortage my a$$

Perfect time to pick up a part time retail job. Go where you shop and get a discount.

Union operator here in Illinois, when I get laid off I get unemployment

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have you checked with unemployment you might be able to claim it because you're off right now

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In a metro area? Doordash can be a good way to supplement if you have a car.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sounds like you need to join a unio.... Ohhhhhh....

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Lyft and Uber offering crazy big bonuses for drivers who sign up in some areas, maybe take a look at that

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can you look at any short term seasonal jobs over the holidays? Sucks having to work then, but if it makes ends meet, maybe it's worth it

3 years ago | Likes 307 Dislikes 0

UPS and FEDEX are always hiring seasonal this time of year. Of course you have to be close enough to a hub to do it.

3 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

The hub has local areas?.... Oh wait wrong hub.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I work for ups and I will say the seasonal opportunities can really help out if you’re in this situation

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ups has a lot of options for career growth. I made 6 figs last year doing union work.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Been applying, nothing yet. My sister got something small but she’s pregnant and they’re not giving her many hours.

3 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 0

If you live in a city try delivering for uber eats or door dash. They'll take anyone who can pass a background check

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If Amazon has a warehouse near you try there. I'm sure they will hire you. Only real requirement is a pulse.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Christmas tree seller? Go to the places popping up and see if you can work there.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Check https://weworkremotely.com maybe there's something there you can do? Credit cards can potentially bury you in even more debt.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

maybe gig work? idk how that works. you could also apply for unemployment, there's options for still employed but on reduced hours.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you dont mind working outside and on ladders try holiday lights install typically October through December

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Post office seasonal worker, good hours, fed. job thats union protected and likely better conditions and policies than you'll find elsewhere

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Mmmm capitalist dystopia

Not all unions are created equal. Went from one where our union rep caved to management to save his own job, to another that consistently /2

3 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

fights for benefits, cost of living increases, for BOTH full time and casual employees.

3 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

I've been in some shitty unions, to the point that I worked on free'ing myself to jobs tied to them. Unions are overall good, but when

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

they suck, they are soooo detrimental to everything about your life.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hate saying things like that, as imgur just interprets me as being anti-union, but I am very much anti-theunionsivebeenin.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No I get that. I was that way until I finally landed in a job with a union that was both invested and empowered. They're out there and /2

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah some union jobs are major risks as they depend on the company having enough contracts to cover the labor. This is why -

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

- trade skill unions are your best option because they can often place you with new companies that have demand for your skills. Example:

IBEW Local 46 in Kent, WA works via a dispatch system where they send electricians to their clients.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Welcome to union seniority, where you're nothing but a dues check till you've been around at least 5 years or more.

3 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 12

Lmao, objectively false.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

OP will be happy to know he's hallucinating being unemployed, then. Bet hes still on the hook for those dues, though

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've been in a few unions, often more than one at a time. Once you've paid your yearly dues, you have the same priority as every member.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Better than non union, where you're nothing.

3 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 6

Right, better to be abused by the union and not paid a cent for it.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 11

Better to have union Healthcare, than the absolute garbage any individual shop has

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Based on that story, he’s not full time to the union, so I doubt he’s even seeing whatever shitty health care they have.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Unfortunately these systems only work when they value the employees time and labor, so that means keeping it small, and not replaceable.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

For the union I'm in, you only need a relatively small amount to hours to qualify- part time would absolutely work
