Poor guy was crying. But also, his girlfriend or someone was very audibly threatening him and demeaning him.
I overheard him saying stuff like "I don't have enough money to pay for it" and "please don't put me back there officer" and "I just want my dog" all the while crying.
Anyone who had similar experience please share. I feel terribly guilty. Downvote if you must.
NotShakespearesSchool
Sweetie, I am sorry you had to witness that, but just read all the wonderful comments and remember that calling is better than not.
oopsijustupvotedthat
This happened to me too. The upstairs neighbor dude got arrested 6 times. Always her fault! She was a rotten human. She finally got hers
GeorgeWashingtonCarver
This sounds like you killed her.
hellangel28
you did what seemed right, no matter what the outcome is
prediabetes
Yes. I tried to act before things got worser.

He could also be playing the victim...

I called the cops on my ex for hitting me in the face, they showed up she said I pushed her (which I did not) I went to jail.
Stacyanna
You separated the situation before someone got really hurt.
prediabetes
I really hope I did. I just wanted to know if this was a real possibility or if I was just making things up in mind.
0atmealTears
It's unfortunate that no matter what the situation is, if the cops are called for domestic violence, the man is taken to jail. It's law
StarmineRendezvous
Calling the cops almost ALWAYS gets you in trouble, whether you want it to or not. 'Murica.
AgamemnonsMemes
Do to the copshop and report the things you heard, could help him.
DrKriegersClone
By all means try, but don't expect them to be very interested without having actually seen who hit who.
BreadyStinellis
We don't know that anyone hit anyone. It was a screaming match and it sounds like he was the one doing all the screaming.
UrsaUrsa
Your comment reminds me of one story about my grandparents - grandma was always abusive and verbally aggressive to grandpa, but always >
UrsaUrsa
kept her voice down, so when grandpa loses his nerves and starts yelling, all the neighbors hear is him yelling. She drove him mad for years
DrewPetursson
The cops were called on a frightened man in a hospital gown shivering in the bushes up my street. He had scissors. 12 pigs shot him.
iStoleUrWaifu
I hope the guy gets his dog back :(
OrangePulp
He won't OP made sure of it
flamingflamingo
There's no guarantee that he's a better dog owner than she is.
unicornsdonotexist
Dudes don't do well when cops come during domestic disputes
Dyledion
I had the cops called on me once for making waffles with a large but chill group of friends at 8pm. The officers didn't know what to do.
UrsaUrsa
"Oh noes, someone is having fun! We can't have none of that, call the cops!" ffs
connorcat
OP it's better to call the coops if you suspect something. It sucks that it turned out the way it did but ignoring it could have been worse.
alfmeister6227
How would you feel if you hadn't called the cops and it was nothing to do with a dog, and somebody ended up dead or badly wounded? U did ok.

baldchihuahua
You deserve to live without violence around you. You absolutely should have called.
GeneralPigly
Never, NEVER regret calling the cops over something like this. If you hadn't, all that abuse would have continued.
CreativeToAFault
I've called cops on someone twice in my life, first time it turned out the girl was beating her bf, which is why there always was noise 1/3
CreativeToAFault
From the apartment, I don't regret calling the cops, but it was lucky that there actually was something bad going on. The second time was2/3

AskCheeves
You can’t be changing you denominator like that. Got me all in a tizzy
CreativeToAFault
Sorry, thought I could fit it into 3 parts then 4 then 5 ;P
T3n3br1s
Yeah, happens to me pretty often aswell. Just use (1/n) or (1/?)
CreativeToAFault
Animals, haven't regretted calling the police ever, the mother cried over losing her children, but this woman was beating her kids, bad 4/5

My wife and i separated for a while. We used to have horrible fights and she would hit me. Things are better now, we've gone to counseling >
Idonthavealottosay
Why are you still there
Irradiatedchipmunk
We split for over a year. I went to counseling for my own issues. She had to go to counseling for her stuff. Then we went together.

It's sad but just because someone is crying, it doesn't mean that they're without fault. Lots of bad people cry when they're caught.
nurycat
Yep, it’s true.
PhoenixQueenAzula
Yeah. I'm the worst, and I cry all the time!

I agree. But hard to digest this.

If the dog is well fed and carefully taken cared of, the dog is in good hand.
SuperHir0
You only saw a snippet of the situation. Both parties are guilty of something and the police will sort everything out.

Ahhh yes, the impervious Duluth model. Even if it wasn't her apartment...

SWATting is calling in a hostage situation on someone falsely, so that the S.W.A.T. team shoes up. Kids think it's funny to do it to streams
theycallmewillywonka
Ohhhhh well that's incredibly fucked up.
Purtypreencess7
and when you see the kids get caught, and sit there and cry in the courtroom, i cant find the specific picture, but its pathetic.
WoefulWombat
What?
storebrandproductmascot
Meaning they called in a fake hostage situation or whatever to get someone on the Internet raided by cops, then cried when they were caught.
BrassXD
Oh man do you have any links? I would love to see some of those get what's coming...
bravecatgaming
look up Ice Poseidon. he is a cringy LA vlogger but he has been swatted probably at least a dozen or so times in various places

someone called the cps on my parents because my sibling and i were too loud while playing video games and they thought they were abusive
makesense
If you can tell the woman is the only one making the threats, when you call the cops tell them you hear a woman attacking her boyfriend.
makesense
If you say 'a couple is fighting violently', they will almost always arrest the man no matter what.
UrsaUrsa
Well, that makes sense. (both literally and in relation to your username)
makesense
Don't take that the wrong way. What the caller 'feels' and what really is happening can be different, but the man will still be arrested.
GieopJoze
Used to be a cop, once we went to an appartment cause the wife called pretending she was beaten. We got there and thz guy who weighted 1/
GieopJoze
Half of the woman weight was clearly the victim of physical violence. We took him in for the night because it would require more evidence 2/
GieopJoze
To lock a female up even for a night. The husband was drunk and happy to spend the night far from her. It was years ago, still not ok to me.
AnotherDayAnotherName
It may be that the officer did wrong, but you didn't.
gazxog42
I hesitated to call cops on a neighbor once, 2 days later their kid wandered into the street, a lady almost run the kid over.
prediabetes
Another angle. Possible. Thanks!
CocoaSandwichCookies
Can't really say the officer did wrong when he was just doing his job...
jimmyriba
"Just doing your job" hasn't been a valid excuse since the Nuremberg trials.
DrKriegersClone
The military have a certain amount of built in authority to reject unlawful / war crime orders. Police procedures like the Duluth model 1/
DrKriegersClone
2/ might be wrong in some cases, but they've been lawfully instituted. Cops don't have leeway to disobey that kind of orders.
InsidiousExperimental
Just because you're doing your job doesn't mean it can't be wrong.
vkmi
Well, you can say he did wrong if he took the wrong position in the matter, and arrested the guy just because he's the guy. Often happens.
Rifneno
This X1000. Many shitty cops will take the woman's side no matter what.
BreadyStinellis
We don't know thats what happened at akk. If it's her house, of course they remove him. We don't know he lives there.
ThorinMapleshield
When they get called in for domestic disputes its standard to separate the people even if they claim everything is ok.
Crowlands
"often"? "Always". In America, at least. They follow the Duluth model, which states the man is always the one to be taken away.
nerdyvet
IF he did. It could be as simply as they had to remove him (not arrest even) because it was her premises and he was the "intruder/guest".
vkmi
Of course, IF. A big IF, but not to exclude. Point is OP did nothing wrong by calling the police, quite the opposite.
HeyOP
Arrest records are public, and you know the date, time and location. If you heard something that might help his defense, go offer.
ShizNitnMyne
exactly, if ur going to stick ur nose in someone's business, stick it all the way in!!!

I will certainly go to the police station and enquire about it. Looks like the guy was just fined. I think. Maybe bcuz he was on the lease.
MatrimBloodyCauthon
I'm glad. Don't overstep but definitely see if there's a way to get involved :) Thanks OP.
secretoaster
Arrest records are public only if you don't expunge it.
ArdentSlacker
In the US, expunging that kind of record is mostly not done.
prediabetes
Awesome. I will certainly try to. The girl seems like a real bitch. I had called the cops once because I heard similar fighting (1)
GnomeDeGuerre
Potentially there may be a little more justice to go around if it's done.
Retromorphic
Try to stay unbiased man remember you only know as much as you've heard through a wall.
GwenShepard1
Could she be keeping the dog as leverage and he just tried getting him back? It kinda sound like they arrested the wrong person :/
ThatGuyVinny
Primary aggressor laws make situations like this a mine field for men on the reviving end of DV
Ihatenumbersinusernames
And they assume 9 times out of 10 that the male is the aggressor.
ChristmasCookieMonster
Stay in your lane OP. You should have never called the cops in the first place probably should have just gone up and told them to be quiet.
Retromorphic
We all have 20/20 hindsight unfortunately
thatoneguy357
Bullshit. He called the cops to break up a violent fight. He had no obligation to go up and risk his own safety by getting involved.
ChristmasCookieMonster
Context. You can argue violently, you can also become physically violent. I interpreted it as the former not the latter.
ChristmasCookieMonster
He said violently fighting, to me that means yelling and screaming in the apartment complex and not necessarily physical abuse
prediabetes
she was repeating "I couldn't help it. You should have been there for me" or something with no regret in her voice whatsoever. (3)

The kind of floors you can cut a hole in and shit into.
RdizzyC
Just very mumbled, muffled yelling from next door, at their kids I presume.
RdizzyC
That is exactly how my apartment is, but I can never hear exact words, even when the neighbor is screaming.
RdizzyC
No insulation between the apartments, just drywall,studs/an air gap, and drywall on their side. Gotta have some thin walls.
flamingflamingo
I don't know they both sound pretty awful. Relationships aren't good guy vs. bad guy. It's usually terrible people dating each other.

flamingflamingo
Perhaps. I think OP's guilt is making him assume more than he should. And my experience with shitheads is doing the same for me.
Crowlands
I've seen nothing that makes the man seem "pretty awful", thus far. What did I miss here?
flamingflamingo
I'm trying to glean the other side of the story instead of instantly buy the narrative that she's the only cunt. Threatening loudly to kill>
flamingflamingo
> yourself is extremely emotionally manipulative. Plus I mean he did nothing to calm the situation. He remained willingly part of it.
Crowlands
Understandable. But I now ask: Would you, honestly, think and say the same if it were the woman making suicide threats?
Crowlands
I mean no offence with my questions, I am being sincere. I'm not saying you wouldn't treat it equally, I'm just asking. Many wouldn't...
Crowlands
Would "She remained willingly part of it" be considered victim blaming? Being stuck in an abusive relationship?
ozchaelz
I'm gonna be honest if the dude just found out that she was cheating on him then he is too emotionally compromised to make proper decisions.

UncomfortableTruths
One caveat; if you know someone with mental illness threatening to kill themselves, cops are probably not the best people to call for help.
UncomfortableTruths
If someone is threatening suicide, call a suicide prevention line for help. Call the police *ONLY* when they're threatening somebody else.
Idislikenamemaking
Depends on where you live. Officers in city where I work are well trained in this area and even have a special mental health unit.
UncomfortableTruths
That's fantastic. But many police departments don't have those, and there are other folks you can call that are better suited to help.
DrivingTheBus
Except that you *need* to call 911. In spite of horror stories cops are trained to give aide and we can't get ppl help involuntarily wo thm.

CitizenDickbag
Too many stories of cops killing the people they're called to help.
JSMinnow
It doesn't make as much money as something that lasts a long time by nature.
JSMinnow
People don't talk about it for weeks and months and years afterward. It doesn't persist because people aren't angry.2
JSMinnow
You never hear the hundreds of thousands of good stories about cops saving lives because there's no outrage. Covering it doesn't make money.
CitizenDickbag
"Of course you'll focus on all the times I murdered people over the times I didn't murder anyone!"
UncomfortableTruths
Way too many police officers in the US are prone to escalating situations. There's a reason "Suicide by cop" is a thing, here.
DrivingTheBus
Then by all means, stand by and watch someone harm themselves for sure instead.
UncomfortableTruths
That's a false dichotomy. We have suicide prevention services that connect you to people trained for this *exact* type of situation.
