I'm guessing this technique was discovered when some long haired Potter got too close to freshly burnt ceramics :)
Buttershroom
Now, make me one with a portrait of your face
Mokelzwerg
Well that was a waste of time...
RedCross669
That's pretty neat.

Dear god I wish my city would let me build a kiln. I miss pottery so bad but I live in a fire prone area.

Aaaaand that’s this month’s data
rssplowman
If it hasn’t happened yet, and it most likely has, someone is going to do this with pubes.
ScottBugVillain
Meanwhile there’s a pissed-off bald-assed horse muttering, “Use your own hair, you hairless effin’ monkey!”
AnnieRyouOK
Can't use your own hair if you're hairless
gman41750
I’m surprised at the negativity from so many. I think this post is outstanding. Interesting and beautiful. Oh well, to each his own

The organic patterns on white ceramic look kinda warframe-y.

This is the post that got me to log in and upvote today.

Interesting, but not attractive looking.
pogon
Well that went on forever. Mildly interesting.

Can we get a shout out to the Hobbes timing bar?
bigdicklover30002
No thanks.
imnotcommentingonthispost
I guarantee he has made at least one with his own pubes
Ruhig
And probably several inadvertently with his arm hair.
rasnajalebi
Definately

Guano bowls: collect the whole set.
fabulouspizza
LovecraftianHugz
So is he also using horsefeathers?
fathogwrestler
Horses don't have feathers. You can't trick me.
KayRaven
Pegasus.
lostandlonelyguy
The first two were great, and the bowl at the end turned out better than I initially thought it would.
irotinmyskin

And another 350 USd earned by putting some horse hair on a hot pot
HerdPapley
It's pretty, sure. But I also find that a bit gross. That was on a horses butt yesterday. Now it's burned into your flower vase forever.
yy0b
High temperature (~1000 C) is surprising good at sterilizing things
Hexxxxxxxxx
Did anyone notice the giraffe throughout the gif?
Invisble1
No finished shot?! Wtf

I was curios so googled it https://www.google.de/search?q=stunning+horse+hair+raku+pottery&prmd=isvn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi9

I know!!!! Do you polish them after?! Or clean them?! I NEED TO KNOW!

We did it with a local artist when I went to school and we just scrubbed them

Ok so they look just as shitty as the WIP ones in the gif. Disappointing.

They kinda looked interesting enough when I didn't know the process. Now it just looks like burnt hair and feathers to me thanks for this.

Forgive me for seeing this subjectively, but I don’t see the beauty in it... it just looks like someone drew squiggly lines then smudged it
mattrixk
Yeah, it's interesting, but it's ugly.
Elbaryn
Agreed. I think it's just ugly.
aluriilol
I don't think it's cool either
My thoughts exactly...
trizzy712
Most of them aren't nearly as smudgy, all of the ones I've seen are pretty clean and they get additional work done like painting and carving
It's a Japanese form, so it's not necessarily a traditional western thing, and thus not for everyone, I like it personally
Sasuuni
Found the weeaboo.
Lol no, I did ceramics for several years
geiokami
These are also bad examples of it, I have a wolf and horse sculpture like this and it makes them look more interesting, also a blue vase
AmArschdieRaeuber
I don't think that's a cultural thing, most people enjoy art from every culture. This is just very plain, I doubt every asian person digs it
The Japanese have an artistic culture based around simple imperfections, it's not their only artistic culture, and it certainly appeals 1/2
To others outside of Japan, but there is a historically Japanese aspect to it, and it is rooted in certain spiritual/philosophical ideas 2/3
That are relatively unique to Japan as well 3/3
keraos
It's imbalanced. One or two of these would likely be stunning when competed, but the others were uneven, poorly distributed.
SHIKAKAAAAA
Neat? Yes. Stunning? Naah.
tilerd
I was really hoping I wasn’t going to be the first to say it haha
PraiseTitties
I don't think it's finished either. There's probably a couple of steps afterward to finish it
KezzySarus
Not really. A scrub to get rid of the crunchy bits, and MAYBE a clear wax or something. But that's it,
PlatypusPowersActivate
As neat as that was I was really looking forward to a shot of the finished product v

Yeah, I was thinking this. He doesn't seem to even avoid the smoke plumes. I think I'd be retching.
KobeBurger
It's not actually that bad when it's a well ventilated area, I've done this before
HaryTheVII
I don't know. I have burnt my and other people's hair on their legs and it smells like a burnt pig. It lasts some time even in an open space
I don't doubt it, but burning hair smell is like the sound of sliding styrofoam together... it doesn't take much for me.
StannumStannum
That's a perfect description.
Ctiyboy
Really? I burn my arm hairs for fun, is it that bad for you that you'd throw up?
GearIsWack
Burn a feather, you will understand, I've made that mistake once, it is awful
JazzSpazzCat
I do too....
