- "The new coronavirus appears to now be spreading much more rapidly outside China than within, and airports in hard-hit countries were ramping up screening of travelers....

World Health Organization (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said almost eight times as many cases had been reported outside China as inside in the previous 24 hours, adding that the risk of coronavirus spreading was now very high at a global level. " -Reuters

- "WHO chief on coronavirus: "Our message to all countries is: This is not a one-way street. We can push this virus back. Your actions now will determine the course of the outbreak in your country. There is no choice but act now."" -BNO News

- "U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said that within 12 hours, airports across South Korea and Italy will screen all travelers for coronavirus. Pence, who has been put in charge of the U.S. response to the outbreak, also said U.S. travel restrictions may expand.

The head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said U.S. industry expects to have the capacity to perform 1 million coronavirus tests by the end of the week. " -Reuters

- "The Seoul government asked prosecutors to launch a murder investigation into leaders of the church. Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon said that if founder Lee Man-hee and other heads of the church had cooperated, fatalities could have been prevented.

Lee knelt and apologized to the country, saying that one church member had infected many others and calling the epidemic a “great calamity”. " -Reuters

- "But Wuhan itself, at the center of the epidemic, shut the first of 16 specially built hospitals that were hurriedly put up to treat coronavirus cases, the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said.

There was also a steep fall in new cases in Hubei, the province around Wuhan, but China remained on alert for people returning home with the virus from other countries.

The virus broke out in Wuhan late last year and has since infected more than 86,500 people, mostly in China.

Only eight cases were reported in China beyond Hubei on Sunday, the WHO said.

China’s U.N. Ambassador Zhang Jun at a news conference said: “We definitely believe that with the coming of spring we’re not far from the coming of the victory of the final defeat of COVID-19.” " -Reuters

- "In Britain, which has 40 confirmed cases, Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged people to be prepared for a further spread. " -Reuters

- "Andorra, Armenia, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Iceland and Indonesia...

Latvia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal and Morocco reported cases for the first time, bringing the total to more than 60 countries with the illness known as COVID-19. confirmed their first cases. " -Reuters

- "A senior U.S. official said he was concerned about a likely jump in the number of cases in the United States, which has had more than 90, with six deaths. More testing will almost surely lead to more confirmed cases.

“When you have a number of cases that you’ve identified and they’ve been in the community for a while, you’re going to wind up seeing a lot more cases than you would have predicted,” Dr Anthony Fauci, head of the infectious diseases unit at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, told CNN. " -Reuters

- "Researchers who studied the first two Washington deaths had said the virus may have been spreading there for weeks, and suggested that up to 1,500 people may have been infected." -BBC

- "Australian health officials are meeting today to consider additional measures to stop the spread of coronavirus, including a possible ban on large gatherings and asking people to work from home - ABC, citing sources" -BNO News

- "King County, WA health officer: "The risk for all of us of becoming infected will be increasing, and although most of the cases will be mild or moderate, the infection can cause serious illness and there's a potential for many people to become ill at the same time" - BNO News

- "Moscow reports first case of coronavirus" -BNO News

- "European CDC update on coronavirus in the EU and the UK. Risk of "widespread sustained transmission" is now "moderate to high."" -BNO News

- "EU Crisis Management Commissioner on coronavirus: "While we should not give in to panic, the situation is likely to still get worse so we need to be prepared and time is of essence"" -BNO News

- "The world is in "uncharted territory" on the coronavirus outbreak, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said. Its chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the virus was "unique" but could be contained with the right measures....

Dr Tedros insisted: "We can push this virus back". He also said stigma was more dangerous than the disease itself." -BBC

- "This was a "unique virus with unique features" and the WHO would have expected wide contagion by now, but containment measures had appeared to work, the doctor said.Of the 62 countries reporting cases of infection, 38 of them had 10 or fewer, he added.

"Around eight countries have not reported new cases for two weeks and have been able to contain the outbreak," he said. China had also shown containment was possible even in countries with a large number of cases. The WHO would continue to monitor whether the outbreak should be called a global pandemic, Dr Tedros said." -BBC

- "The WHO says the virus appears to particularly affect those over 60, and people already ill.

In the first large analysis of more than 44,000 cases from China, the death rate was 10 times higher in the very elderly compared to the middle-aged.

But most patients have only mild symptoms and the death rate appears to be between 2% and 5%, the WHO said." -BBC

(If there is something that you've found that you think should be here, please let me know! =)

- No freaking out. Take a deep breath. Did you do that? Ok, good, now you can keep reading.

- The virus is named SARS-CoV-2, the diseases it causes COVID-19
https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2020/02/11/802352351/new-coronavirus-gets-an-official-name-from-the-world-health-organization

- CDC Telebriefing held on 2/28/2020
https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2020/t0228-COVID-19-update.html

- Symptoms are similar to that of the common cold, but can lead to more serious developments such as pneumonia and organ failure.

- The greatest at-risk population is the elderly and those with existing, underlying illnesses.

"“We do not understand the disease pyramid properly”, adds Whitworth. “There are people who are asymptomatic, people who are infected with mild disease, people infected with severe disease, and then the people who die. It looks like 15–20% of confirmed cases are severely ill, and something like 3% have died. But we have no idea how this fits in with the total number of cases”. "- The Lancet

- Like other respiratory infections, the coronavirus spreads between people in droplets from coughs and sneezes....it is still too early to know what its death rate will be. " - Reuters

- "...experts say much is still unknown, including its mortality rate and transmission routes." -Reuters

- Due to the nature of the virus, it is present in both the respiratory tract and the intestinal tract (and therefore is present in feces of the infected.)

- The Virus appears to be able to infect individuals before symptoms show in some cases. This is a important development. This means the incubation period (average of 10 days, 1-14) is ALSO the time you can be infecting others, vs other pathogens where you have to be showing symptoms to be infectious, such as SARS, to which the virus is 70% similar to, genetically.
https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2020/t0214-covid-19-update.html.html

- The Virus has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization

- "Human-to-human transmission of 2019-nCoV has been confirmed, with an R0 of 1·4–2·5. Many more cases are expected. On Jan 30, 2020, WHO declared a public health emergency of international concern. “The main reason for this declaration is not because of what is happening in China, but because of what is happening in other countries”, commented WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom." - TheLancet https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600(20)30056-4/fulltext

- There are confirmed cases of human-to-human transmission outside China.

- A study has been released detailing incubation rate/how long it lives on the surface of objects. (2-10 days incubation*Update below*, and lives on surfaces up to 9 days)
https://www.journalofhospitalinfection.com/article/S0195-6701(20)30046-3/fulltext

*There is reports of the incubation period now extending up to 27 days.

- The Virus has been successfully grown in a lab outside China, aiding research efforts.

- The CFR (mortality rate) has been evaluated, and ranges from 18% in Wuhan, to 1.2-5.6% in other nations. It varies widely due to available resources/care/etc. This is a current estimate, and is cautious that it may continue to change.
https://www.imperial.ac.uk/media/imperial-college/medicine/sph/ide/gida-fellowships/Imperial-College-2019-nCoV-severity-10-02-2020.pdf

- A large study has been released evaluating who is at the most risk. Thus far, it appears to be elderly/hospital workers.http://weekly.chinacdc.cn/en/article/id/e53946e2-c6c4-41e9-9a9b-fea8db1a8f51

I'd advise everyone to get their Prescriptions filled, as the virus has now caused its first drug manufacturing shortage. If possible, see if a 3 month plan is available (or a higher dose to allow halving, giving an extra month.)
https://www.businessinsider.com/fda-announces-first-coronavirus-drug-shortage-2020-2

And, as a user brought up, don't forget your furry (or scaly) friends. Get some extra pet food/accessories.

*********To those who are just starting their preparations, I suggest these simple beginnings*********
Water, Food, First Aid, Flashlight/batteries, Radio.

-Water: Best would be dedicated containers, but in a pinch, the 1-gallon jugs work just fine (just don't last beyond a year or two) And they're cheap! Aim for about 1-2 gal/person/day.
-Food: Canned food is great! It's cheap, lasts forever, but a bit bulky. Just buy a bit extra than you usually do (if you eat canned foods,) otherwise just put together canned 'meals' and go from there!
-First Aid Kit: If you don't have any training, that's fine- a typical wal-mart one will do fine. Maybe snag some extra medications that you may need (antibiotic ointment, allergy meds, etc.)
-Batteries/Flashlight- LED is a great option and cheap nowadays!
-Radio- any radio off amazon/that can receive emergency channels will work. Goal is to be able to get information if the power is out.*****************************************************************************************

- There is increasing spread outside of China. CDC has recommended Americans prepare for a potentially 'severe disruption of life' within the states.

- Community transmission has been confirmed in the United States, along with its first death.

-There are multiple indicators that the numbers reported by China are not reliable.

- There was a constant 2.1% (+ or - about .1-.2%) reported fatality rate, without much variation (EVEN with this jump in cases/deaths), and that is another indicator of data manipulation, as well as the cases following a quadratic curve. (and reported cases/deaths dropping sharply after an announcement by the Chinese President)
- China appears to be more concerned with economic status than addressing the outbreak.
- Journalists covering the outbreak continue to be missing/otherwise unable to post updates or contact family.****************************************************************************************
FEMA recommends 1 week of supplies for a general crisis- this would be a good time to make sure that's in place at a bare minimum for any crisis. A pandemic requires significantly more supplies than a week (months.)

The discovered contagious incubation period, 9 day surface survival time, and confirmed human-to-human transmission is a disturbing find, and this continues further watching with caution. A high R0 (R-Naught), how many people are infected per one sick, is also rather high.

Resources: https://www.ready.gov/kit

https://www.readyrating.org/Resource-Center/All-Resources/shelter-in-place-supplies-checklist
https://www.thereadystore.com/diy/1608/9-essentials-sheltering-place/

I'm more than willing to offer recommendations on how to get started if it seems too daunting, as 3 days to 1 week is the bare minimum for any general disaster/crisis to have on hand, let alone a global pandemic (to which this has not progressed to just yet, however)

Food, water, first aid kit, battery-powered radio, flashlight is the backbone of an emergency kit/stash.

I'll keep these updates coming daily, stay safe everyone, and thank you for reading,

Shifting to Ko-Fi vs gofundme, as someone asked for an alternative, and this one is more sustainable I think. While I don't drink coffee...just replace that with an MRE! XD

Alternatively why not check out the cdc, ecdc and who websites which have real expert advice from people who are actually experts.

Except dots are never removed, Wisconsin's was given a clean bill of health so these aren't accurate.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 7

Why would they be removed? If they had a case that was cleared it's likely there's other untested cases in the region

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

@BunkerJohn, I’ve been meaning to mention that you cite both Worldmeters and Worldometers in your posts; I assume one is a typo. Thank you!

In a bed, probably

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm glad it's not the same for kids as elderly. Most diseases treat both of those groups rougher than regular adults

I very much appreciate you posting this before you left for your evening thing you have planned.

The current ones in Finland are also from Italy, the one Chinese tourist we had in january was contained properly. They really fucked up.

Good luck in Finland, y'all are my favorite northern Europeans.

3 seconds? It's five seconds!

6 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 0

Kiss an infected person on the mouth for two seconds to test that theory. Science says 1000 kisses minumum for valid statistics.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

2 thousand seconds of kissing?! Count me in

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nuh its still just 2 seconds, splitover 1000 people, you are essentially headbutting them

Starting to sound like cooking a chicken through a kinetic thermal slap.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This might be a stupid question and sorry if it sounds in insensitive. What’s killing people, does it shut down organs? Prevent breathing?

6 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 1

Not a stupid question. This is fundamental and objective to understanding morbidity and mortality.

6 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 0

It affects the lungs severely from my understanding. Here is a survivor's pov. https://time.com/5783838/coronavirus-symptoms-wuhan-survivor/

6 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

They think it's possible that the virus gets into the brain and causes respiratory failure..

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

pneumonia. usually in people already with breathing issues or compromised immune systems.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think most commonly it causes viral pneumonia, which fills alveoli (part of lungs where oxygen enters blood) with liquid which prevents

6 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 1

So basically you drown, great

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

oxygen getting into your bloodstream.

6 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

I believe it causes acute respiratory distress(ARDS). Mainly this occurs with the elderly and those who have preexisting medical conditions.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Knowledge saves lives, thanks!

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

What does the end game look like? Contain until all infected recover so it can’t be passed on anymore?

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Currently the rhetoric is slowing down the spread to buy time for antivirals and vaccine trials.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Too late for that, too widespread in too many places, now we delay and contain it as well as we can year or so until there's a good vaccine.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Adding to the other comments, contain and prevent as much as possible to reduce overloading hospitals.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Contain as much as possible to SLOW the transmission until a treatment is available. It’s been said early on this will become communal.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

if no vaccine is develop, it will become a seasonal virus like the flu...

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Why would this be seasonal? Does warm weather limit transmission?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

winter is when people come togather because it's cold. And also when school in secession.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thanks to your posts I started gathering supplies early last week! We’re set to ride it out here in San Antonio!

6 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 2

The infection spread is high but death rate is low. More ppl due from normal influenza every year, and it has a vaccine!. It's overblown

There's already cases in Georgia

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's called the Midwest, where the nearest town is 62 miles away.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Already in georgia.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2 in Fulton County, GA - one county over from me - just confirmed. Supposed to be self-quarantined with minimal symptoms, but.... yay.... ?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fuck sorry to hear that's to Damn close

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The thing is that we need a list of places a victim went for the 10 days prior. So they can track and check people who had exposure.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Agreed. The problem with this disease seems to be the scope and scale of the potential infection rate in terms of proximity and interaction.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Combining that with its ability to survive on surfaces (given favorable condition) and the range of its incubation period, it’s a huge mess.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What do you think about the lack of testing/ scarcity of tests in the US?

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Test how?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The infection spread is high but death rate is low. More ppl due from normal influenza every year, and it has a vaccine!. It's overblown

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Caught you early tonight. I wait for these updates all day. Thanks @op, I don’t know if you understand how much we all appreciate you.

6 years ago | Likes 129 Dislikes 6

Well he does cite the source which 99% of the info comes, updated without having to rely on @op https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Nahh he’s got it

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m aware of the sources, however I still look forward to his posts. All the info grouped together, his thoughts and the rationality he has

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And I really just appreciate him taking the time to get it all together and make a post everyday for some of us who don’t always have the

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Time to go looking for all of it. So thanks again @BunkerJohn for everything you do!!

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

well that’s a well thought out, honest answer. A Mrpucket upvote for you sir.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Most welcome! =)

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks for adding the by age death rate. Will calm a lot of people down.

6 years ago | Likes 692 Dislikes 5

Does anyone know if that is taking into account the lag due to incubation time? (Total deaths today divided by Infected 14 days ago)

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I feel like I’d be in a total panic if it weren’t for these posts.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Work at a pharmacy, majority of patients are 50+.. before you ask, we don't have masks, Hand Sanitizers or gloves... yes soap is a good alt.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For sure! I'll admit, I grew up getting dirty, so I have a good immune system, but I was getting nervous.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the younger the calmer. The older the deader

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And grearly worry those people who have elderly relatives plus those in care homes. At least knowing what is at risk gives society focus.

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Which is also probably an overestimate at this early stage of infection

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have elderly parents, one is immunocompromised. This actually increases my concern.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I lost my immunocompromised kiddo, but some public freak out will be good for th ed others like her bc people take hand washing

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

more seriously as well as covering their mouths when sneezing and coughing. (Also should be for the others like her)

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Am I correct then that those number compare favorably to the 1918 flu pandemic, which disproportionately hit the young?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's not in the same league as Spanish Flu, but it's still a _lot_ nastier than the usual seasonal bugs.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Would be useful to compare with regular seasonal flu

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

death rates are unrelevant , considering long incubation time and so these people got infected 14-28 days ago , what worries me are deaths>

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

who will start happen from today infection rates in 14-28 days

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This. Serious helped so much

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I want to see data excluding any from china on this. Cant say i trust the numbers coming from that government.

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Nor from Iran i imagine

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Even this is probably wrong. Until we can test w/ 100% accuracy the infected numbers are most likely higher in turn lowering the death rate.

That was the goal! =) Kids and most healthy adults = good to go.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Definitely alleviated my fears a bit when I realized my kids weren’t super at risk of dying from this!

6 years ago | Likes 148 Dislikes 1

Flu-B is killing kids this year...

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was surprised to hear on the radio children haven’t been infected much.

6 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of that Star Trek episode where a planet's disease killed off everyone except children and teens

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not sure about the infection rate, but I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw that zero kids aged 0-9 have died from this.

6 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 3

Theres some really interesting disease patterns out there like the spanish flu was particularly bad for healthy individuals.

6 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

I’m really curious to read up on the pathophysiology of Covid-19 once we know more about it. Weird demographic/poss reinfection are strange.

Maybe dumb question but if you have these things but they're controlled w/meds does that make a difference?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Possibly. It just increases the likelyhood of complications. A 95yo diabetic man wich a congenital heart defect could still be fine while(1)

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

A young healthy individual could hit the shit lottery and wind up in ICU. It is like generalmagnov said they are just risk factors for comps

They are at high risk yeah. But remember there is overlap in the "Over 80" and "People with CVD" categories, meaning you can't just add them

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My dad's 75, Cvd and currently on chemo (in remission). His dr says not to leave the house. They suspended his chemo for 2 weeks.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My parents are in their late 70's. My father has COPD and my mom has mild heart failure. I'm borderline freaking out.

6 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Deep breaths. Remember, these are not addative, and the same cases would be represented in multiple catagories. They may be higher risk but

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It is certainly not like a death sentance. Early detection and supportive care can still be game changers. These are things the doc would

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Likely know and would monitor them very closely since this kind of info is becoming more readily available.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My dad is 1 of 13. I've lost 6 aunts and uncles in the last 4 months. The most recent Friday. Sickness and time are my enemy.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’m right there on that freak out border with you

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

My dad is 85, my mom is 74. They are also both microbiologists and still work full-time at their university, so on the one hand they know 1/

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A shit-ton more abt infectious diseases than I do, & will be smart. Bt they also keep getting respiratory infections after trips for work 2/

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So if they do get sick, I think it will be really dangerous for them. 3/3

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Both my parents have COPD. I've attempted to caution them but they'd rather listen to Daddy Trump and he says everything is fine.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mentioning Trump is a good way to get my dad angry. My parents hate him.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's good. I'm a scientist and have to watch my Dad listen to propaganda instead of research. Home life isn't great that way.
