38.) Justified (FX)

Timothy Olymphant plays a similar character to the one he played in Deadwood, but much lighter and much funnier. He plays a US Marshall who moves back to his hometown after a bad incident occurs. This show mixes humor, action, and drama in a great way. It is also filled with fantastic acting and great characters. Timothy Olymphant and Walton Goggins have awesome chemistry.

37.) The Americans (FX)

Playing as Russians who move to America as undercover spies, Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell make married life and spy life extremely interesting. Great acting and an awesome story.

36.) Rome (HBO)

Cancelled too soon and has a rather rushed ending, but Rome is still an extremely good show filled with great character actors like Ciaran Hinds. Extremely recommended.

35.) Rescue Me (FX)

Denis Leary writes and acts in Rescue Me, a show about firefighters. This show mixes the funny and serious and the light and the dark very well. Leary does some amazing work. It definitely starts out stronger than it ends, but Rescue Me is definitely worth watching.

34.) Damages (FX)

I always used to dislike Glenn Close and this show didn't really help that. She plays the "bitch" very well. But it made me see just how great of an actress she is on this show. It has a stellar cast and is extremely suspenseful.

33.) The Shield (FX)

Michael Chiklis plays anti-hero Vic Mackey in this awesome show, brought to you by Kurt Sutter (creator of Sons of Anarchy). Awesome stories, actors, and characters in every season.

32.) Fringe (FOX)

What started as a procedural show ended up being a serialized piece of brilliance. I wasn't impressed by the pilot, but a few episode into season one and Fringe starts to gain its ground when the real story begins. Awesome sci-fi and a performance by John Noble that will make you laugh and cry (still mad at the lack of an Emmy).

31.) Orphan Black (BBC)

This is a weird show that keeps getting weirder. But watching one actress play 7 different characters is really fun to watch. Plus, its good.

30.) Sherlock (BBC)

The best version of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson I have ever seen (sorry RDJ). It is funny, serious, and every episode feels like a movie. Incredible writing as well.

29.) Suits (USA)

Suits is a hell of a show. Great characters with amazing chemistry and good writing. I don't agree with all of the creative decisions the writers make, but it doesn't matter. This show is addicting.

28.) Community (NBC/Yahoo TV)

Troy and Abed in the morning! This show is hilarious. Cultural references are littered throughout every episode. Great writing, great characters, and great interactions. Minor speed bump in season 4, when the creator was let go. But all was back to normal in season 5. #sixseasonsandamovie

27.) Twin Peaks (ABC)

A great mystery with amazing direction from brilliant director David Fincher. An awesome soundtrack and a great mystery that was cancelled too soon. The network really shit the bed on this one.

26.) Arrested Development (FOX/Netflix)

I'm surprised FOX had such a great show (that also ended too soon). They usually don't get really good and funny shows like this one. A great cast and every episode s hilarious. The newest season on Netflix was a little rough, but it still feels like the same show. Highly recommended.

25.) Chuck (NBC)

I expected this spy-thriller show to be all fun, but I was wrong. This show has some great acting and some really dramatic moments. Has a great soundtrack throughout the series and some really fun action scenes. It has characters you'll fall in love with instantly.

24.) The Newsroom (HBO)

Still waiting on the premiere date for the final season, this is a brilliant show written by Aaron Sorkin. Jeff Daniels (who won an Emmy for his performance) plays the lead solo-anchor of News Night. It shows the dynamics of a real newsroom and has some great acting.

23.) Deadwood (HBO)

Welcome to fucking Deadwood. This has some of the most vile language you will ever hear on a TV show but it is fantastic. Ian McShane plays one of the best characters ever as Al Swearengen. Another great show that ended too soon.

22.) Hannibal (NBC)

Graphic and not shy about it, Hannibal is one of the best show on TV today. Mads Mikkelsen is the best version of Hannibal I've seen. Sorry, Hopkins lovers. But there are just a lot more layers to the Hannibal character now. Some of the best visuals and cinematography you'll see in a TV show.

21.) The Good Wife (CBS)

A legal drama, but the very best legal drama. Great acting, great supporting characters and side stories; The Good Wife is one of the best shows on TV and this past season was possibly the best season of a drama series ever.

20.) Doctor Who (BBC)

It doesn't matter when you start watching this. Whether its the older Doctors from many years ago, or with one of the three that have been around since 2005. It is a fun show, with light and dark moments. The CGI is bad at times, but it makes for that in excellent writing annd character development. Fun sci-fi for anyone.

19.) Oz (HBO)

A grim and dark look at prison, Oz is a great show on HBO that is sometimes hard to watch. A realistic look at prison life equals out to an amazing show.

18.) Undeclared (FOX)

Not as good as Freaks and Geeks, but pretty damn close. A funny and innocent show with a great cast of characters. This is another Judd Apatow show, and most of the actors still star in some of his movies. Plus you get to see a young Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy). Whats not to like?

17.) Parks and Recreation (NBC)

Ron fucking Swanson. Him and Andy Dwyer have become big hits with the internet, and there is a reason for it. They, along with the majority of the cast, are freakin' hilarious. A very smart show that happens to be a riot.

16.) House of Cards (Netflix)

A look at how to scheme around politicians. Kevin Spacey plays a man with a plan. A guy who wants to make it to the top of the political ladder by making friends and choosing who to stab in the back. It is awesome.

15.) 24 (FOX)

Some of the most intense action you will see on a TV show. Jack Bauer is a badass who fights against terrorist threats. Kiefer Sutherland shows off some great acting chops too.

14.) Freaks and Geeks (NBC)

Cancelled too soon....again. A lot of these great shows were cancelled way too early. This is another fantastic show done by Judd Apatow. A lot of familiar faces in it. Just a truly great show.

13.) Firefly (FOX)

Again....cancelled. This one still angers millons of fans to this day. Best described as a western in space, Firefly was the starting point for some of the best actors on TV. Nathan Fillion went on to Castle, Gina Torres to Suits, Morena Baccarin to Homeland, Alan Tudyk to movies, Adam Baldwin to Chuck, and Summer Glau to Arrow and Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles. This was a fantastic show with amazing characters. It is a hell of a fun ride while it lasts.

12.) Seinfeld (NBC)

A show about nothing. Literally. Who knew it would be so damn funny? It is regarded as one of the best written television shows of all time for a reason. It really is about nothing but it works because it is hilarious and the key group of characters are hilarious.

11.) Homeland (Showtime)

This references season one of Homeland. I try to think that Homeland was a one-season show or a twelve-episode mini-series. Because the first season is some of the best TV you will ever watch. What comes after just isn't as good. Claire Danes plays a crazy CIA agent who thinks that a rescued POW is really a turned-terrorist. Very interesting stuff with great acting.

10.) Game of Thrones (HBO)

Addicting. This show is dark and filled with language and nudity. It isn't for everyone and it will definitely surprise you along the way, but Game of Thrones is one of the best shows on TV. It mixes excellent storytelling, acting, and visuals to make it a truly awesome experience.

9.) Friday Night Lights (NBC)

The first season of FNL is one of the best seasons of a TV show I've ever witnessed. A show about football and so much more. Filled with characters you instantly care about, this is one of the cases where the series finale was perfect. Highly recommended.

8.) Sons of Anarchy (FX)

A motorcycle club who run guns. That is the premise of Sons of Anarchy. It is brilliantly executed by Kurt Sutter. It has great actors like Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, and Ron Perlman. They will make you laugh and then make you feel some feelings. The final season airs soon and I can't be more excited.

7.) True Detective (HBO)

It has only had one season, but every season will follow a different story anyways. But man, the acting in this show is kick ass. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play two partners investigate some gruesome murders. It is dark and it is amazing.

6.) Mad Men (AMC)

A lot of people are bored by Mad Men because it is all drama, and no action or suspense. But the interactions between the characters the amazing acting from everyone, especially Jon Hamm, is reason enough to watch this show. If you don't like what's being said, change the conversation.

5.) Battlestar Galactica (Sci-Fi/SyFy)

A sci fi show about a war with Cylons in space. But is about a lot more than that. There are religious elements, military elements, and political elements as well. This show has everything, along with some great moments along the way. Some of the best acting you will ever see on a Sci-Fi show.

4.) The Sopranos (HBO)

Known mostly for its ending, The Sopranos was one of the first looks at an anti-hero on television. James Gandolfini is freaking amazing as Tony Soprano. You won't see Gandolfini, you will believe he is Soprano and be invested in his life, along with his family's life and his other "family's" life. He plays a mob boss and that's the show. One of the best shows ever made.

3.) Lost (ABC)

I will probably take heat for this, but I loved Lost. I loved the ending and everything about it. I loved the crazy sci-fi elements and all of the mysteries. I loved that they set up questions that I had to answer myself. I loved the cast and the acting and the writing. Lost is one of my favorite shows, and it all starts with a plane crash on a mysterious island.

2.) The Wire (HBO)

A realistic look at cops and drug dealers. It humanizes drug dealers and you see things from their point of view. It has a big cast of characters, all of which are amazing and played by talented actors and actresses. I love that every character is treated with respect. Michael K. WIlliams as Omar Little is one of the best characters on TV, if not THE best character on TV.

1.) Breaking Bad (AMC)

This one shocked me. I never expected a show about a high-school chemistry teacher cooking meth to be such a good show. But Bryan Cranston kills it acting-wise, as does his co-star Aaron Paul. An amazing finale, and every season is amazing. This is the best show I have ever watched. And Bran Cranston's Walter White is the ultimate anti-hero.

nice to see Galactica made your top 5. Fantastic show, great characters.

So good. I love Timothy Olyphant, and he's in his element as Raylan Givens.

Twin Peaks is David Lynch, not David Fincher. Great list, though.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

haha I knew it wasn't Fincher. I had just watched the trailer for Gone Girl. Dumb me, writing his name instead.
