Flowers for Algernon made me sad.

I thought The Stranger by Albert Camus was not very good. What did I miss?

Here's a list of 25 fairly popular books!

The Quran?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Don't fucking read the stranger it is not an existential masterpiece it is basic and almost lazy

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The Alchemist is a good read indeed, but IMO Coelho is a simplistic motivational poster equivalent of literature. Would not recommend.

Where's Mein Kampf?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

25 books you were probably forced to read in highschool

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

No Jules Verne?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pretty low standards for "mind blowing"

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

There are some very good books there. I know there are a few mediocre picks but seriously curious, what would you recommend?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh God, many good books here...But Pablo Coelho? That's crap disguised self-help disguised as a novel

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Can I read Slaughterhouse Five without having read Slaughterhouse One - Four?

9 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 1

#100 from Years of Solitude series was a bitch to get up to.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean, you might miss out on some of the context of the world, but in general it's just fluff so you should be fine.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Mary Shelley was a terrible writer. She owes the success of her novel to Byron and her husband, but her style was childish at best.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It's an easy read, but to me it's about the concept, and less about the complexity of the writing.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I will read exactly none of them.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Fave and forget

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Always a +1 for Flowers for Algernon

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Love that story. I may just pick it up again.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I finally read it yesterday, because I keep seeing it on all these lists. I loved it, but did not 'cry like a little bitch', as promised.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You have no soul :o

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What do you think im going to read those books if i didnt even read the list

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

I can't believe you didn't include "We" by Jevgeni Zamjatin to your dystopian horrorshow

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Of Mice and Men was pretty good too. The ending will definitely blow your mind.

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

I definitely blew Lenny's mind, that's for sure.....

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Read most.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't read Flowers for Algernon unless you feel like going on a major feels trip.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just don't read it. It's the better option.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

1) I bawl every time. It's worse knowing what's coming. I usually start crying right when the writing increases in complexity, and

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2) when Algernon starts going a little crazy I pretty much don't stop sniffling till the end.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or watch Phenomenon with John Travolta

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

More like 25 books that will make you question human decency and its value as a race.

9 years ago | Likes 209 Dislikes 8

The Alchemist was more good feelsy about the human race, though the main character does get robbed tricked and beat up.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Guess you haven't read Tuesday's with Morrie or the Alchemist.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, actually, that's one of the few I haven't read. I'll have to add it to my list :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Troubled?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The internet can accomplish that in less than an hour

9 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

YouTube comments can do it in minutes.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I'd recommend turbo-nerd stuff. Like /Weaving the Web/, or anything by Schneier. Which will only make you question your intelligence.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Read Schneier, question your intelligence, then realize that everyone is that stupid as well, and no "mind-blowing" book can fix that.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup. At least something like WtW is entirely positive and optimistic.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

#26: Kurt Cobain's autobiography

No stranger in a strange land?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

heinlein was trash who's only redeeming quality is accidentally writing satire

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Tell me how you REALLY feel

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I think heinlein was more concerned about his weird sexual hang ups than writing good fiction.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Many of thee started life in the Fiction category.

*these

Dorian Grey is a good book, and should read it. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a great one on humanity. But, you can find better lists.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I HATED Dorian Grey. It dragged to absurdity for the first half, and ends just as it's getting remotely interesting.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Yeah, where is Mein Kampf?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On FP yesterday, where is stat guy?

9 years ago | Likes 109 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haha, good stuff!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I realized that after reading a few of the names.. It's so annoying

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I Dont mind reposts if its been a while, but reposting a FP post the next day is just sad

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Should be *

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

7 of those books I had to read in highschool

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

4 for me, but you're right. My friend that went to hs in Houston went through graduation not reading a single book.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So, can't they be both?

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

You can't have fun and learn at the same time, silly!

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

My bad, sorry

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

With how unpleasantly long and drawn out an over-analyzed they make it, as a 2 month assignment worth 1/4 of your grade, no. No they can't

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Pff agreed on that one.. But if you read it outside of school I mean

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pretty much every single one honestly

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Not clockwork orange. at least my HS thought it was a bit too much for high school students

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also what kind of high-school recommends ender's game, watchmen or Frankenstein; I want to go there!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Most. Also Persepolis and the Kite Runner are commonly found on required reading lists. A lot of Hemingway too.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Seems odd to have a graphic novel on a school reading list?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

No. Not at all. Persepolis is essentially an auto-biography that captures a time and place must Americans will NEVER understand.
