Requiem for a Dream
Devastation rating: 11 / 10
There's no way you're surprised about this unless you've never seen it. If you are about to see it for the first time, heed my warning... you'll need an adult.
_____________________________________________________________________
Edit: The movies listed above are available to watch on Netflix as of 10/6. Old Boy is another Korean movie that is available now, as well as The Road. A few very wonderful movies that are not currently available on Netflix (but have been or is available on DVD) are: Pan's Labyrinth, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, With a Girl of Black Soil, Memories of Murder, Irreversible, Dear Zachary, I Saw the Devil, Blue Valentine, The Mist, Blood Diamond, Life is Beautiful, Elephant, and a few others named in the comments.
Also, a few people mentioned Grave of the Fireflies as a devastating animation. Grave of the Fireflies made me tear up, but it doesn't even compare to The Plague Dogs. Want an animated movie to ruin you? Watch The Plague Dogs. It will ruin you.
The Man from Nowhere
Devastation rating: 7 / 10
If suspenseful rescue movies is your thing (Man on Fire, Taken), watch The Man from Nowhere. One of the most intense rescue movies I've ever seen with some unforgettable scenes not for the faint of heart.
The Wave (Die Welle)
Devastation rating: 7.5 / 10
The Wave is a German movie about a high school teacher's psychological experiment gone awry. It's one of those very few movies that takes a hypothetical situation, portrays real-life consequences, and leaves you terrified of the real power of the human psyche.
Edit: Die Welle is based on the events of The Wave experiment at Elwood P. Cubberley Senior High School, Palo Alto, California, USA in 1967. Try to remember as you watch this movie, that the experiment only lasted 5 - 8 days.
Donnie Darko
Devastation rating: 8 / 10
People still try to define Donnie Darko beyond the movie's genre. Whether the events are supernatural or through the eyes of a schizophrenic, there are a few scenes that can give you some trouble falling asleep.
Buried
Devastation Rating: 8 / 10
Claustrophobic? Ryan Reynolds plays a man who's trapped in a box for an hour and a half. Of course, there's more to it, if it's in this list.
Silenced (do-ga-ni)
Devastation rating: 9 / 10
A second Korean movie on this list which absolutely earns it's rank. Silenced grips you right from the opening scene with a small deaf child walking towards an incoming train. It's goes straight downhill from there. Oh, and it's based on a true story.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Devastation rating: 10 / 10
The holocaust is no place for children. The Boy in Striped Pajamas not only takes you to one of the darkest points in human history, but... it... actually I don't even have the words for this one. Watch it.
Schindler's List (1993)
Devastation rating: 9 / 10
In Poland during World War II, Oskar Schindler gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis.
Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009)
Devastation rating: 7.5 / 10
A drama based on the true story of a college professor's bond with the abandoned dog he takes into his home.
Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008)
Devastation rating: 7 / 10
A filmmaker decides to memorialize a murdered friend when his friend's ex-girlfriend announces she is expecting his son.
Dancer in the Dark (2000)
Devastation rating: 8 / 10
An east European girl goes to America with her young son, expecting it to be like a Hollywood film.
Life Is Beautiful (1997)
Devastation rating: 8/ 10
When an open-minded Jewish librarian and his son become victims of the Holocaust, he uses a perfect mixture of will, humor and imagination to protect his son from the dangers around their camp. (116 mins.)
Incendies (2010)
Devastation rating: 7 / 10
Twins journey to the Middle East to discover their family history, and fulfill their mother's last wishes.
Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
Devastation rating: 7 / 10
A tragic film covering a young boy and his little sister's struggle to survive in Japan during World War II.
the feels
Come and See (1985)
Devastation rating: 7.5 / 10
After finding an old rifle, a young boy joins the Soviet Army and experiences the horrors of World War II.
The Pianist (2002)
Devastation rating: 9 / 10
A Polish Jewish musician struggles to survive the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto of World War II
We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
Devastation rating: 8 / 10
Kevin's mother struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly vicious things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined.
The Elephant Man (1980)
Devastation rating: 7 / 10
A Victorian surgeon rescues a heavily disfigured man who is mistreated while scraping a living as a side-show freak. Behind his monstrous facade, there is revealed a person of intelligence and sensitivity.
trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RDW1ldM9zM
Atonement (2007)
Devastation rating: 8 / 10
Fledgling writer Briony Tallis, as a 13-year-old, irrevocably changes the course of several lives when she accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he did not commit. Based on the British romance novel by Ian McEwan.
P.S these some of the movies that i really find Devastated.

GnightSweetPrince
I had my only panic attack at the end of Buried and could not breath. JFC that movie is intense.
pixelkissx
I recently watched Boy with the Striped Pajamas cuz another imgur post recommended it.. I cried for the whole last half of the movie...????
MaryPoppinsYalll
Requiem and grave of the fireflies is easily a 30/10
GiveLifeBacktoMusicAroundtheWorld
The Road should be included too. I dont think it's on Netflix anymore but it needs to be seen if you like crying for 2 hours straight.
Rivalyn
I saw Life is Beautiful in school, about three of the kids in class (including me) were happy it was the subtitled version.
Stefkowns
Donnie Darko always leaves me depressed and lonely feeling. But it's sooo good!
cessiecat

avanishprajapati

alwaysupvotingpallascat
I felt so sad and depressed after watching Dancer in the dark... Ugh
groveldog
Yep, it's the first time I ugly-cried in front of another person while just watching a movie. And then I wanted to break things.
Maxxbod
Fun fact to "Schindlers List" : the word list is also a German word and means ruse or subterfuge.
Thysanoptera
Lilo and Stitch. It ends happy but I cry through most of it
ninjabudgie
I break down every time when he is in the forest with the book and he is all alone - just can't handle it
Blastergv9
Life is beautiful is great. I still shout "buongiorno principessa" to my wife when I come home from work every day
arctidak
That movie was an absolute art piece.
MurdockTheHawk
You deserve 1000 points and a tank
AlowisiusTandplak
Knowing and loving that film, your post gave me shivvers down my spine.
mauraea
How Dear Zachary made it on this list of fiction and is NON-FICTION, and was rated lower than Requiem of a Dream is beyond me.
margaretolson
We Need To Talk About Kevin is the best birth control ever
ninelbhammer
So i watched it just now because of this list, and boy oh boy do i have some concerns about being a parent.
margaretolson
I had to pause it at one point and walk away cause I wanted to jump through my screen and murder that child
mycatToastwasafatasshole
It's reminded me of Gone Girl, but with your kid instead of your wife. (I saw Gone Girl first)
mycatToastwasafatasshole
HOW IS DEAR ZACHARY ONLY 7/10 IT'S A TRUE FUCKING STORY THAT DESTROYS YOU!!!!!
MoJoVixen
Atonement the book almost fucking killed me
jeffreybaratheon
Haven't read the book but the end of the movie was a punch in the gut. It's just so blunt and jarring.
Lisossoma
Yeah, the book is overwhelming......the movie so so....
MoJoVixen
I love James MCavoy is amazing but Keira Knightley bugs me. The book had me in the fetal position sobbing
Krimia
Ugh, they both murdered my feels.
SpringPixie
Oh man The Mist! I've never been so devastated at human beings in my entire life. But thanks! Faved and saved for future film watching! +1
IAmNotCallum
I feel really bad but I actually laughed at the end of the mist
SchminkieTheBlueCat
The ending of The Mist made me irrationally angry.
ShutupandSmelltheRoses
That movie made fog and getting trapped in a store terrifying and the stomped on my heart!
lowfunctioninggenius
Nobody Knows. Japanese film
Improbabilitydrive42
That was based on real events, wasn't it? So sad.
lowfunctioninggenius
It was. Oldest kid turned into the film maker.
wittyandcharmingnamenoonehasthoughtofyet
What dreams my come is absolutely devastating, I taped it before Robin Williams died and haven't had the heart to watch it since.
tkRyno
Wait, you... taped... it?
wittyandcharmingnamenoonehasthoughtofyet
Taped uses fewer letters than recorded.
Quarantinous
It was one of the first things I thought about after learning of his death
wittyandcharmingnamenoonehasthoughtofyet
Made me cry like a little girl.
Pixie0422
People say it's terrible, but it's one of my favorites.
wittyandcharmingnamenoonehasthoughtofyet
Whaaaa? Who said it was terrible!?
sensitivecat3
I've never cried like I did at The Bridge to Terabithia.
klayb
Trashass movie ????
AmIAVolcanologistYet
Oh man... my parents rented that for us on vacation once. Don't think they knew what it was really about. Still haven't forgiven them.
MucsNairhon
My 5th grade Reading teacher let us watch the movie after reading the book, and even all the kids who try to act thug cried.
twofishtails
I was FURIOUS that the girl died, absolutely besides myself. Couldn't forgive the filmmaker and utterly forgot the rest of the movie.
dephress
Never saw the movie, only read the book as a kid. Didn't find it that sad.
stabbedintheface
Not sure why you were down voted for that...
Mewrulez99
I watched it, years ago, only remember there being a forest, maybe some tree beast, and a wooden bridge.
Gastonisasociopath
I literally cried for an hour after that movie and I ain't gay or nuthin
Rickbot
Hachi was AMAZING
Supersaiyanricksanchez
Strong feels from this movie
Improbabilitydrive42
I can't bring myself to watch it.
Rickbot

Improbabilitydrive42

No One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest?
giveittomestraightlikeapearcidermadefrom100percentpears
The end of that film always leaves me cringing. With Chief.. Always scared about dropping the water fountain on his bare feet.
Yourfavoritebandsucks1974
dogestyle
I think you meant to give Grave of the Fireflies a devastation rating of over 9000
choosenamehere
I watched Grave of the Fireflies when I was a kid, I want to watch it again but I don't know if it'll have the same effect as the first time
jeroen298
I am never watching that again. My heart can only break so much.
Krono562
Watched this movie right as I was really getting into anime about 15 years ago, first time a movie ever made me cry.
Rezanon
Dancer in the Dark made me cry. The music was a perfect juxtaposition of the story. Ugh...
Efreeti
Absolutely, tried+failed to rewatch many times. Watching that movie demands a piece of your soul, and leaves a splinter of itself in return.
ovelanimimerkki
Everyone seems to say it's the most devastating film they've seen. I felt nothing during the film and I wouldn't consider myself a cold dude
lkat
Have the movie and can't watch it.
Lonelyheartpoet
I actually think these ratings are lit bit under. But it's about the taste. Grave of the fireflyes is the most shocking film I've ever seen.
Neorago
I love that movie, but I can't bring myself to watch it again. Specially knowing it's a semi-autobiographical story.
dogestyle
Fun fact, the writer of the book it was made from was a parliament member and wrote a comedy about pornographers
jdavis1186
I had to stop it about half way through and come back a week later. Too much for one sitting.
Narwhalzipan
IMO Silenced was so much worse...
maclaglen
I fucking hate that movie.
Cranimad
why?
dogestyle
because of the feels it made him/her feel despite not knowing he/she was able to
maclaglen
The entire ending could have been avoided if the older kid just apologized. He chose misery over pride.
Cranimad
Felt frustrated too. Hard being a kid in war times, eh?
SgtLuftwaffles
I really didn't feel that much when I watched it
babbzilla
Fantastic movie. Watched it once, never again. My heart can't take that kind of damage.
lilgreenstuff
I had this movie recommended to me and bought it but have been too scared to watch it now ????
MoonyT
The happiest part of this movie is usually the saddest part of most sad movies.
lilgreenstuff
Oh yikes. I'll save it a bit longer then I think
HakunaMyTatatas
Don't be scared. It's an amazing beautiful movie. Just bring a friend. And tissues. And a new heart.
lilgreenstuff
Ok I'll go to Costco and get the industrial pack of Kleenex cuz I'm a softhearted cry baby in movies. I'll save it for a night I need a cry
dogestyle
no, actually save it for a moment you're feeling good, it would destroy you otherwise
IAmHufflepuff
The thing about the Boy in Striped pyjamas is it makes your stomach twist and your guts clench. That isn't sadness. That's horror.
heartlesskitten
That ending though. I seriously did not expect it.
KnightOfTheBrohirrim
I know, fucking Lupin.
snoozywomble
I read the book then watched the film. Didn't tell my other half the ending. He was so horrified. He knew it wasn't going to end well but...
LanaDelReyy
I cried for hours after. Just in the fetal position, sobbing. I had to miss my classes that night. Just couldn't function.
Tjayebird
I was in the theater in the fetal position sobbing. Can never watch that movie again. Too traumatic.
ElbowdeepinElmo
Seen it 4 times...good movie but it never did that for me.
gnarledhalo
You're definition of devastating is much different than mine.
shoutuckerfatheroftheyear

gnarledhalo
Lol shit
TeenGirlSquad
I dunno, man. I bawled like a little girl at the end of Life is Beautiful.
zmngeolh
Dear Zachary was not devastating. Dear Zachary will crush your soul and will leave you an emotional wreck for at least two days.
JackTheHook
I just watched it... I'm sad, devastated and angry at the same time... Fuck !
whoeversmeltit
I couldn't inhale for a week.
savethephantom
Both times I watched that movie, I was shaking crying. It's so depressing.

His parents are true inspirations. God bless their soul.
candygoblinalpha

MsMax75
Two days? What kind of monster are you recovering that fast?
CupOfDog
God this movie made me so utterly sad yet furious at the same time
ialwaysupvoteemperorsnewgroove
I came here looking for this comment. Not disappointed. Dear Zachary is still f***ing me up and it's been months.
prixen
I never cried so hart before i saw that movie
APackOfExcitedGingers
Can someone explain why it's so soul-crushing? I watched it, and was not phased by it. It played out like an episode of Dateline.
MartinD28
If it has to be explained, there's really no point. But the worst part for me was subconsciously putting myself in the shoes of (spoiler)=>
MartinD28
the parents after losing their only child, having to pander to the murderer in order to spend some time with the grand child (spoiler)=>
MartinD28

So much this
Fox444
Seriously. Don't watch this movie. I watched it a month ago and I still think about it regularly. Heartbreaking.
zmngeolh
1/2 There was an amendment made to a law in Canada as a result of this documentary. I dont want to leak any spoilers, but that goes...
zmngeolh
2/2 to show how powerful it truly is.
Harvestkitten
It kept me up at night for several days. I actually had to watch it twice to truly grasp it
mycatToastwasafatasshole
Same. The second time I watched it my roommate decided to watch it with me, thinking it was just a documentary. It destroyed her, too.
MissCisnotaverage
This is the truth. I was crushed. I had to pause the movie to catch my breath. It was ugly crying at its best.
CounselorWaffles
I agree. Dear Zachary has a devastation rating of 15/10. I was a husk emotionally for a few days afterward.
CanadianMooseRider
Dear Zachary was higher than 15/10. It was beyond devastation scale. I honestly dont think I will ever forget it
Minimum8peat
Right? Idk how this person can rate it 7/10 when it was real. That triples its devastation factor.
broncos80girl
Yes! I couldn't breathe after watch it and seeing the title now brings tears to my eyes. Devastating isn't even close
ExBlankEx
I'm kinda frightened to watch it now.
SpartacusSparks
Seriously ruined me for a solid week. I was in a daze. This one will make you want to hug everyone you love
candygoblinalpha
Go watch, we'll wait http://www.reactiongifs.com/r/waiting.gif
MyExistence
Do it. Don't read ahead. But be prepared to cry in the middle of the night 2 days later when you absorbed what the fuck just happened.
luckytyphoon
I just wanted to know what you guys were talking about so I went ahead and watched it, just finished it. On behalf of my emotions SCREW YOU!
Fingusername
I literally yelled "NO!" at the screen a few times.
SusanGoGetMyPants
I was screaming at swearing at the tv calling the mom all sorts of names. My husband was in the other room like "WTF"??

And the end of The Mist.
Martecles
One of my favorite movies, even with the alternate ending
infernoinmyass
Makes the cliffhanger ending of the real one seem fine
namiasdf
That's because this scale only goes up to 10.
