Hey guys! I love Mr Show, and Bob Odenkirk in general, and whenever I post something with him in it theres always a sea of "wait, is that Saul Goodman?!" comments. Its weird to me, cuz I've always known Bob for all the groundbreaking comedy he was responsible from the late 80s to today. So heres a little Bob Odenkirk history for people who may not know!

In his early career, he was a writer on SNL...

...and as a writer/ star of the Ben Stiller Show from 1989-1993 (which won him two emmys for his work)...

...as well as writing for Late Night with Conan O'Brien (with another bunch of hilarious (and one future creep) people)...

..He also had a minor role in The Larry Sanders Show..

From 1995-1999, he and David Cross (as well as, to me, the most outrageously talented bunch of writers/ actors in any sketch comedy group: Sarah Silverman, Paul F. Tompkins, Jack Black, Tom Kenny (the voice of Spongebob Squarepants, Ice King from Adventure Time, and many others), Mary Lynn Rajskub, Brian Posehn, Jill Talley, Scott Aukerman, and Dino Stamatopoulos all began their careers with Bob and Mr. Show) created and starred in Mr. Show with Bob and David. It is an incredible, important milestone in sketch comedy; the stream of conscious blend of live and recorded sketches was unlike anything that had come before it. Unfortunately, HBO didn't have much success with it, and after it had been placed in the Monday nights at 11:30pm timeslot, its 4th season was its last. Thats a picture from one of their Mr Show parties from 1998, hanging with Matt and Trey.

After Mr. Show ended, Bob ended up directing a few comedies in the early 2000s (Melvin Goes to Dinner, Lets Go to Prison, and The Brothers Solomon), and he kept popping up in random small roles in tv shows. Heres him in Seinfeld...

... and later, in Season 1 of the Fargo tv series...

...then, in 2001, he discovered Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim after they sent him a compilation of their short films. He went on to produce their shows Tom Goes to the Mayor and Awesome Show, Great Job, as well as mentoring them through the beginning of their careers in comedy.

Then, while Breaking Bad was happening, Bob was offered the role of Saul Goodman by Vince Gilligan himself, which took Bob completely by surprise, but as we all know, he killed it; Saul was only supposed to be a minor character in 4 episodes of season 2, but Bob created such a great character that he was made integral to the story of Breaking Bad, and was later given his own prequel show which he seems to be doing a pretty good job at.

He has said how weird and surreal it is, to go from almost 30 years of working as a comedian/ comedy writer/ producer and director, and suddenly being handed this amazing, dramatic role with a very dynamic character. I've been a huge fan of his for a long time, and he had made some incredible contributions to the world of comedy even before he struck it big with Vince Gilligan and Saul Goodman. I've always been happy seeing him pop up in random roles over the years, and having him in such a big, well known role really makes me so happy for the guy.

Most recently, hes landed a role in Steven Spielbergs new film The Post, and will be appearing as a mystery character in The Incredibles Two.

Great Job, Bob! Keep up the good work.

Mr. Show has always felt like America's heir apparent to Monty Python. Same silliness and intelligence in their humor.

I was born without an accent!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ok but what about Birthday Boys. That was another great sketch comedy show he produced and starred in.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes. But he didnt really star in it. Hamford and the boys were the stars.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He was in every episode though.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I personally like Better Call Saul more than Breaking Bad. There, I said it.

It hasn't gone on for enough seasons to scatter the way BB eventually began to

It's funny, kind of reminiscent of Mr.Show. Bob plays some parts that remind me of his old characters from Mr.Show.

Great post. I love this guy. Hell I love about everybody you mentioned!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you, and yeah, he really has a nose for good work and great comedy.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks for this OP! Just thinking of sketches like the Pre-Taped Call in Show and Highest Number still cracks me up

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm still frequently reminded of "It's Insane, This Guy's Taint" for... reasons.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Fuck yeah that wide"

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pre Taped Call In show is absolutely incredible.. that one was written by Dino (starburns) and its just killer. So many good ones though

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So he’s the one to blame for Tim and Eric and the decline into madness that Adult Swim has been experiencing.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 6

Tom Goes to the Mayor was actually very excellent and imo better than Awesome Show Great Job

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I happen to find them hysterical... but to each their own? v

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

When I visit my brother and his wife in CA they go apeshit over Tim and Eric. I laugh politely.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I hated T and E for a long time. Then the absurdity just "clicked" and now I can't get enough. No way to defend it. Just how I feel.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Happened to me when I watched their million dollar movie. I was hooked at "well now you dooooo, you piece of SHIT!!!"

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Will Forte is a genius.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This. I loved Bob Odenkirk until I read this. I hate Tim and Eric’s “shows” with the fiery passion of a thousand suns.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 9

So you don't like this one skit show (out of a thousand) from a comedian you "loved," you hate him "with a fiery passion..." now? So fickle.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No no no, I hate Tim and Eric with a fiery passion. But love is a fickle mistress.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Run, Ronny run is one of my favorite movies of all time.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Such an underrated comedy!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

idk if you know this but there are two cuts of that movie. One that was made for theater and didnt make it and one that went right to vhs

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I had no idea!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They are not too dissimilar. But I had a boot leg copy of the first cut, I then watched the vhs and it was noticeably different.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

i thought that my home was my castle, no one scrutinizing me... no pigs, no lying bitch no hassle. Yall are brutalizing me.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Can't a man not drink his beer in silence? Can't a man not crudely lie and scream? Can't a man not control his bitch with violence?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ya'll are brutalizing ... MEEeeeeeeeeeeeee! how was that? Lets all go have a Champagne Jam.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

911 it's me again; Ronny's beating me again. I got you on speed-dial, wish you'd call me once'n a while! 911, it's me, again.

I want Bob Odenkirk and Sam Rockwell to make a movie together.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep, that would be incredible. I love those guys.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have you seen Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have not

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's got Sam Rockwell in it and it's fucking excellent!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I honestly thought the guy on the right was supposed to be Jim Cornette.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah at a quick glance.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My favorite single scene he ever did was on an episode of Arrested Development where he played a marriage counselor for Tobias/Lyndsay

"And these Tobias... When was the last time you looked at these?" Or "WELL IF I'M NO SCHWIMMER, YOU'RE NO JENNIFER ANISTON!!"

Why would we ask you anything?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I heard Dino on a podcast and the guy was into some hardcore bdsm as a young man. “Wanking into an old guy’s face” type stuff.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Genuinely thought Starburns was the creep for a good 30 seconds.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

LOL i had no idea starburns was always starburns.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

haha, he wasn't. He actually didn't like being Starburns iirc from the Community commentary(but he was great in the role).

There is a human being underneath it all

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Think he was referring to Conan

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 27

Don't try to be witty on imgur.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I thought he was going for Louis CK

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 7

Conan appears creepier than CK. Don’t know if reality is different but my opinion is based on the way they portray themselves on screen.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 28

Maybe it’s the whole CK jerking his dick in front of women thing that made him a creep...

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 5

its funny that it wasnt a secret for so long and eventually for some reason it caught up to him.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

No, that is completely normal behavior for a grown man

MRW says that Mr. Show is the best comedy sketch show in the history of television...

8 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 2

Python followed closely by Mr. Show and Kids. There's basically two eras: before and after Python.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I would separate it into: Something and then Something Completely Different
