In Shimabara, Japan, streets are so clean they are home to hundreds of koi carp in street side Channels

In 1792 volcanic activities of Mount Unzen, an earthquake & tsunami triggered new springs, abundant pristine water flowed, even through the streets.

I also make original postcards crafted on eco-friendly Japanese paper!
They are great to send to friends or little accents to display around the home!

Would mean the world if you have a look at them!!!

I heard this is a tourist attraction

Gross river in my region has a species of koi, they're fine with it but it's a cute thought anyway

The bush to the top right looks like a seahorse

All fun and games until they evolve into Gyarados

The water is fairly clean, except for the Koi piss and shit in the water.

Arguably, Florida have their own iconic animal swimming in the ditches as well

I started planning a Japan trip today

When I did my 5am walk in Osaka I saw shop owners hunched on the footpath, scrubbing their storefronts, the pavement and even the gutters.

I’ve never seen anything like that in any other country.

This is japan fetishization.

Japan so clean, they have a massive sexual harassment problem to the point it being a systemic.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That’s a tributary not a gutter

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

These fish literally clean the plates , good documentary on it

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

FWIW up until ~30 years ago - those gutters could have been open sewers - IOW toilets drained into them.

Unlike the alligators and rats in NY City's sewers.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

lol yea no

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I believe you mean Sea Man.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol Japan is NOT so clean. Some old castle towns are like that. Rapid reindustrialization post-war had side effects on cities & environment

Carps also live in the Chicago River. That gutter water does look clear though.

Seems like they take pride and wanna treat their land with respect.

The paintings are a nice balance between colour vibrancy and subject simplicity.

Thanks!

15y in Japan. Japan is not clean, it is not terrible but not what you describe, far from it. Carps can live in sewer water....

3 years ago | Likes 181 Dislikes 2

And if it isn’t sewer water, it soon will be with carp living in it.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OP using it as a lure to promote their products

3 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 0

There is one place in Japan with water like this. But its not that common

Took part in a volunteer clean up of Akihabara when I was there before. Holy fuck the state of it

3 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

Spent 6 years there, agreed, only superficially environmental friendly....much is just for appearances. It's nice not seeing litter though.

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

cleanest road side ditch water ever

3 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 1

It's not though, it's a clever tool by the locality to bring in tourists & only in a specific section of the town. Been there, it's lovely

Good for them.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Do cats not hunt them for sport?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If I'm remembering right they're mostly just bone & cartilage, hardly any meat. Not soft enough for a cat to bother battering around.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But do they have microplastics??

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hopeful? No. Cynical? Almost certainly.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, a joke based on two previous posts today about microplastics and toxic chemicals in US freshwater fish.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They exist on Earth, so probably.

Koi are totally fine with being in dirty water

3 years ago | Likes 497 Dislikes 2

Apparently in clean water too, smart guy

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

You say that like some animal CAN'T live in clean water lol

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Is Boston their home?

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

pretty sure part of the reason the ditch is so clean is the koi.

3 years ago | Likes 145 Dislikes 1

Nope, reason is that it's a specific patch of gutters that they keep super clean & "confine" koi in as a tourist trap

3 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

They're carp, after all.

3 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Contrast this with the post on /r/UrbanHell today about the filth of a canal in Delhi, just remarkable

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry, should've posted the old.reddit.com link instead...I hate new reddit with a passion and I'll leave forever if they get rid of the old

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Koi are pretty dirty fish though, they can survive in some toxic ass water.

3 years ago | Likes 356 Dislikes 0

My landlord has 2 large koi living in a nasty pond that hasn't been cleaned in 15 years. He also hasn't fed them in 3 years. They live 1/2

3 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

off of the dragonfly grubs that hatch on the bottom, and whatever else finds its way into the pond. And yeah, he's a lazy asshole. 2/2

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Sounds like they're living off of spite

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

That's pretty accurate for most members of the carp family.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ass water

3 years ago | Likes 71 Dislikes 1

There's always an XKCD.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There really is. 8n this case an ancient one going by the artstyle

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also, the post implies that there's non-toxic ass water. ?

3 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

"Check your labels to make sure it reads 'non-toxic ass water'"
