I’m paraphrasing a bit, but that was the gist of it. She was much more kind and empathetic. And I can’t say that I was surprised that I’ve got a lot of issues to get through. Just trying to get myself in a better place mentally, and it looks like I’ve got some work ahead.
Anyway, at least I have a cute puppy to help me through it. Her cuddles are also good therapy.

Winning therapy is hard sometimes.
paranoidplatinum
Yeah, my therapist uses a part of my story as the "atleast this didn't happen to you" thing. (worded better tho)
Muunk
That's high praise....all things considered.
Recaffeinated
My first session ended with "You know man, you're remarkably well adjusted". What he didn't say was louder than what he did say
iktome99
Therapists actually say this kind of thing a lot. Still need to build people. Most people would have given up! You're so strong! ?
xtinian
I guess she helped show you direction /s Glad to see you are taking steps towards betterment, good luck !
breach1
Dang. You won the trauma trophy?
FeChefImgur
FeChefImgur
Good on you for taking that first step. I hope it helps you out :)

hiitsmeagain
I've had two different therapists cry in front of me. Big seal face.
aristera
Spider-man was #1 on Shields watch list as he had every reason to become a villain with so much pain and loss. You are Spider-man.
TheAnimalLady
Me, when my therapist was like, "It's incredible you're not absolutely off the fucking rails, seriously, please give yourself some credit."
ShellPhish
NervAssEva
Awesome work OP. Stay strong, you got this!
GoDownOnHer
That's her way of saying good job and she's proud of you for getting through tough times
Sokonomi
It will take a nobel prize to solve the shit that's wrong with me. A lot of people ive met are still alive only because of a law.
Deathwellspent
+1 man, same convo after my first session over a couple years ago. Guy was amazed, it just shows the strength you never knew you had.
Zickezacke
Sound like she thinks you're pretty badass.
RealRaceRiotsAreAboutGettingBlueshelledInMarioKart
Similar experience. Mine said "wow, I'm surprised you lived through that" apparently "trust me, I'm trying not too" is the WRONG response.
TheAnimalLady
And that's how we get grippy sock vacations.
TRexine
I... don't want to sound like I'm being judgemental but a therapist saying that line specifically is kind of weird.
TRexine
I'd think most therapists would understand that not everyone handles traumatic events the same.
theenemysgateisdown
Getting acknowledgement of how bad it was, and validation, is part of the magic sauce of therapy.
FeChefImgur
zirrah
So it sounds like you have done well on your own, time to see how well you do with help!!!
ParanoidCarrot
been there done that
Hexidimentional
Had a therapist say that once, i reminded him I succeeded at suicide three times
MoonRiverFrost
She meant it as "Wow, you went through a lot of shit and other people would have been in in a worse state of being. " means you doing great
MoonRiverFrost
And with the help she can provide, you'll be able to better cope and understand the things that have happened in your life. Namasté OP
flyinghamstick
I feel ya OP, I got "I have clients that have been through the same thing you have that are now in jail or addicts. You should be proud that
flyinghamstick
You are so well adjusted and are as successful as you are"
andrewedf10
lmao, good job i guess. she meant it as something postive, just said it strangly. no ones perfect, including your therapist. keep going.
andrewedf10
we all have our ups and downs and getting some help for those downs is nothing to worry about; i wish it was more common.
RhymingEverything
"we all have our ups and downs" - strange, a fundamental truth all people share, that we seem to have to deny it when we're in public
justThisPerson
Some people's ups and downs are greater than other people's. Validation of either is important, minimizing sucks.
dawggunner
@therapist "I'm being guarded; you're a quarter mil in debt, I get more guidance from my barber" Shrunk by Aesop Rock

LooseyGooseyBrett
@OP, your therapist sucks
monikir
OP did say they were paraphrasing and that therapist said it more kindly - but I did have the same guy reaction reading this.
TheS4ndm4n
I would probably prefer an honest and blunt therapist. If I want to pay $100/h to be lied to about how great I am, I'd visit a sex worker.
monikir
I would prefer a therapist who didn't have archaic views on addiction. Also - why are the only options honest and blunt or sex worker?
rayhatesu
sarcastic guess, but probably because without insurance, the latter would be cheaper.
fearlessfloyd
Once told a psychologist I was getting concerned about my drinking. She said "oh, you're smart, you'll figure it out. You'll handle it." Hah
eratosthenesearth
"That'll be $150 please."
nero4ty2
In my very limited experience just bringing it up to anyone is a great first step and could mean you can help yourself with encouragement
NomDeImguerre
"Yeah, how many members of Mensa do you think are alcoholics?"
fearlessfloyd
Who gives a fuck about Mensa? I could blow most of those dumbasses away, but I don't care because IQ is just one measurement.
MetaSomma
Probably a lot, also higher rate of substance abuse in general. I wouldn't be idolizing those fuckos
YurgenGrimwood
What do you mean you don't idolize people who pay a fee for a useless certificate that says they're "smart"?
MetaSomma
Wait I think I read your comment wrong. I'm confused. Take a "meh"
NomDeImguerre
Yeah, I'm saying the number of alcoholics in Mensa is just as great as in the general population. Addiction has nothing to do with smarts.
SmashySashimi
That's an awful shrink. I just got flashbacks from every adult I ever asked for help in school.
fearlessfloyd
Hi! Just an additional comment for the upvote.
Catitapillar
I like your style
DVSBSTrD
Well it looks like they were right ;)
SmashySashimi
Not really? It wasn't until I was in my late 30s that I found out I've got ADD.
DVSBSTrD
Better late than never.
RayMC
What’s ADD?
SmashySashimi
Attention Deficit Disorder, it's a neurological condition that affects attention span and focus, memory and other related cognitive traits.
