On January 13th, 2017 we came across this after pulling of a false vent. My wife and I were taking a shower on that Friday afternoon, and our kids had came in to pet our cat. That's when they noticed the vent was leaking. So of course with urgency they ran to our bathroom, which is located right above the laundry room, to say we had a big problem. My wife went downstairs to inspect the situation. After seeing quite a bit of water coming from the vent, she went and got me. Luckily I had a screwdriver nearby, after noticing the vent looked a little off, and this what we uncovered. So naturally we contacted the property manager about a mold and a water leak.

I forgot to add this lovely picture as well, seems I cannot add it to this gallery unless I take everything down. But here it is http://imgur.com/36d28YE, this was the napkins that were in between the vent and ceiling.

Fast forward to Saturday morning. I normally work weekends, but this particular weekend I was off due to training. So our apartment maintenance crew came out to "fix" the situation. During that time I had asked who thought it was a good idea to cover up a hole like that with a false vent, and which they snapped at me saying they were allowed to do that. That all units had a hole similar to that that they are access points. (I know what an access point should look like and it doesn't look like a hole knocked into the ceiling.) So they sprayed some bleach on it, told us that their was no leaking going on, and then tried to put Styrofoam in between the false vent and ceiling. My wife was texting the property manager all while this was happening, which makes me believe that she told them to stop, and that they let the maintenance manager take a look at it. So they left.

After they left, I decided to put my phone into the hole, to see what was going on in between the floors. As you can see, it isn't pretty in there. At this point, I told my wife that we should documenting, taking pictures, and filming anything that is happening. In which we also took two videos of the pipe leaking while we are in the shower. We also bought two in home mold testers, one to put in the laundry room hole and one in the upstairs bathroom.

Fast forward to Monday, when our maintenance manager decides to come take a look at everything. We are going to name him Slumlord, considering that's what everyone here calls him that. My wife filmed this whole process, a whole 10 minute processes, that seem to last forever. When we explained to him that we believe there is mold growing up there and throughout the house, he blew up. He went on to belittling us, calling us crazy, and that we were up to no good. We were even making up the leak, that there was no proof on my phone that it was leaking. I told him that I would get into the shower, and that would cause it to leak, and once I left he decided to leave, and belittled my wife some more. And then proceeded to throw all of our rocks off of our porch. Two rocks that are sentimental to my wife because they were her grandmother's, one that was given to me from my kids for a father's day gift. Said that we could trip over them.

So we began taking the vents off in the downstairs area. This is in the living room.

Again living room.

The downstairs bathroom.

Downstairs bathroom

This is in our kitchen.

And again in the kitchen.

And this is the mold testing kit from our laundry room today. Speaking of today, they called us to tell us they will be bringing in a 3rd party to test for mold. If this place has no evidence of mold, then we will be responsible for the bill. If there is mold, the 3rd party will be doing all the repairs and cleaning of the mold. Then if we do not give our 30 day notice at the beginning of February, they will be giving us our 60 day notice. All because we wanted our place to be properly treated for mold.

Also cat tax.

Edit: The video from Monday,it's 10 minutes long. https://youtu.be/8fR2tdWo-bk

Get a lawyer. You may be owed some compensation. Retaliatory eviction is illegal.

Hopefully you DID NOT clean those vents? The pipe looks like recent activity. Use this opportunity to get out of lease.

We did not clean anything. We wanted to leave it all there as proof.

Hopefully no one in your family has gotten Ill. Mold can cause very serious health issues.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We're hoping no one has gotten ill. We'll be seeing a doctor soon, specially after they test this place for mold.

Take it to a lawyer. I don't know what state you're in, but that's not cool at all.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We plan to. A friend of my wife's is suppose to get us in contact with one soon.

There's nothing wrong with putting a false vent over an access point, but the hole should be cut square and not look like someone punched it

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Right, and the would be tenant should know in advance that the false vent is an actual access point.

I wish it was that easy.

If you don't talk with full honesty then it's gonna be a failure. Open up. Both of you to each other. Truth rules!

What an idiot.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He does this with all the tenants when we bring up mold.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

John Voight is your maintenance guy? Any ways, that blows. Next time thoroughly inspect the place for crap like that before moving in.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I definitely wish we would have. We were just crazy excited to be out my folk's place.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Get a lawyer...read up on renters rights....and document everything

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd like to revisit the part where you and your wife were having a shower with your kids and cat in the room. Sorry about the mould.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What? No. We were in the shower. The kids and cat were downstairs.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ah. You lost me at "and the kids came in to pet the cat."

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sometimes, once you have kids, it's about convenience and having 10 kid-free minutes to talk and not about sex. Not always anyway :p

Just went through this. Don't clean anything and don't let the slumlord touch anything. My slumlord cleaned the wall right before the /1

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Inspector came and it gave them a false negative. This has been going on since Labor Day and I'm moving out next week. Fuck Brooklyn.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I hate this for anybody. It's a really tough situation.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Check your renter laws. This is a retaliatory action. http://www.dca.ca.gov/publications/landlordbook/

We're looking into everything that we can.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You assume everyone's in California, then?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 15

Boy..That went so high over your head, it's now in geostationary orbit.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

"check your renter laws" that says they need to look into their local laws. The link helps give them an idea of keywords to search with.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Contact the renters union for your area also.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We don't have a renters union in our area, sadly.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not for the state? I would calling 211 and tell them you want to talk to someone about renters rights

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll look into that. Thank you.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For sure I've dealt with issues before and honestly take the time to read your state's renter laws and such.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ew gross

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It really is, the whole situation is awful.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

this is dangerous for your health. the mold should be removed by professionals asap. in my country photos are enough evidence

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

According to Slumlord we were making this is up.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

of course. because it would cost him a lot to get everything back in order. Especially kid should not sleep in a room where mold grows

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you really wanted to expose them for that call your local news stations.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We're trying that now. We're hoping one of them will take up the story.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ask your neighbors if they have the same problems as well. They are brushing it off as nothing

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Everyone that I've talked to here has had an issue with mold. They are just too afraid of getting kicked out. They currently will not renew

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

our lease because of us reporting mold.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's illegal and you should report them to the state fir that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I am certified mold inspector. Message me if you have any questions.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0
