Before and after : Here's a reconstruction of Curetes Street in ancient Ephesus. This is how Ancient Greece really looked like at that time

Sep 23, 2021 6:27 AM

Classy joint at one time, it was!! Where’s that damm time machine when you need one? Lol

In case you're ESL, we say "How ___ looked" or "What ___ looked like." Not "How ___ looked like."

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The title is probably still true but Ephesus is in Turkey, not Greece.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Something AC oddysey captured well, how very colorful, even obnoxiously so by today's western standards

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Been there. There was a "secret" entry next to the library that lead to "fun" house for men. "Honey, I'm going to read some Homer".

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Even the clouds are reconstructed. Amazing!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We want more stuff like that !!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Just not as clean...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So painted pillars, which was the style at the time.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We can rebuild it! We have the technology!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Was beautiful, still is in a way

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I bet the roads were nicer too.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

They were basically the same except they were divided into two lanes: One lane for cisium and a narrower lane for bicycle.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

i hope one day we remake at least one of these cities/neighbourhoods as they were. with the paints as well

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Kind of tacky

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

fuck man.... the suburbs have always been there...

4 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 3

I need more pictures like these.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How do you know it looked like that ?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You shouldn't say "how it looked like". Either "what it looked like" or "how it looked"

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

"How it could have looked" would be much more appropriate.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For those wondering on the garishness, two factors to consider: One is that the fragments of pigment we find are pretty thin, so what...

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We find may not reflect the proper nuances of shade. Even so, this would be the colours at their most 'raw', not accounting for weathering

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They do seem to like bright colors in the Mediterranean though.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not a place you want to live in if you had a lisp.

4 years ago | Likes 88 Dislikes 1

Greethe in general ith not lithp friendly.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know you're not talking about my friend Bigus Dickus.

4 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 1

Or his wife, Incontinentia Buttox

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

These awe Womans! We wewe tawking about Cuwetes in Gweece!

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Who knows, maybe the ancient Lisper of Ephesus was the first person in history to drop the f-bomb. "I'm from...eh...fe...fe..fuUUUCK!"

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

And the obscene graffiti on the walls?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Brothels were indicated by a barefoot carved in the floor.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Interesting, but I'm always so disappointed to see the garish original paint jobs on ancient statues.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Kind of makes them look like plastic action figures.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They probably weren't as garish as these images depict, as they're going off what pigments they can pull off the original statues. It is...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...how they were created by their original sculptors. Despite its proliferation of marble as a medium for construction and art, the...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...Greeks hated how it looks and they commonly painted buildings and statues to mask it. The Romans, obsessed with Greek art, did the...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...same and then often covered it again with graffiti.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why does it seem more beautifal destroyed.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's either, "how it looked" or, "what it looked like", and never both.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’d really wish the greek or international government would crack their knuckles and fully restore an ancient greek town or city.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Isn't that the temples valley in Agrigento (Sicily)?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

And Ephesus is in Turkey, not Greece.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

It was in Ionia, which belonged to Greece at the time it was built. "Turkey" came into existence in 1923. Much happened in between.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

TIL, thanks.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's Ephesus, you can see the reconstructed facade of the library of Celsus in the background. Temple valley is a lot more spaced out ?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Like.... Spaced out, man!!!!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I been there. It's full of kitties.

4 years ago | Likes 308 Dislikes 0

We see your statue, Doctor.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is true of the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto Japan, too. I spent more time petting strays than walking under arches when I visited.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You mean it used to be full of pussys? ;-) I’ve been and remember certain inscriptions ?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've been there too and saw zero kitties. Need to visit again for the kitties.

4 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

Greece in general is full of kitties. It was probably my favorite part of my trip

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same and did saw a lot of cats. 10/10 would revisit for the cats alone

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

There are lots of puppies there too!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And pushy Italian tourists.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

At least they‘re still alive. Have you ever been to Sakkara?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did you go to the Church of Mary? I loved Efes and Kusadasi too!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Went to Kusadasi in the off-season. Our hotel owner took us on personal tours to Ephesus and Pamukkale. Stay at Hotel Stella! Guy is dope.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy hell! I think that’s the same hotel we stayed at! Was the guys’s name something like Aberdeen? Pamukkale was amazing!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He had all the connections. He had friends open their restaurants just for our family. Discounts on leather goods. My dad left a nice review

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I checked and we did stay at Hotel Stella, Kusadasi. Photo from balcony (my scanner isn’t working):

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Love it!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Those pillars are pretty sturdy. My next home will be all pillars

4 years ago | Likes 97 Dislikes 0

Improve upon the Parthenon design, make the roof all pillars, too!

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

You gotta get yourself some marble columns! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWGPsS0dh5k&t=62s

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How did that not turn into a bigger deal? I laugh my ass off every time I watch it.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No rooms, no furniture, just endless pillars

4 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

You’ll be a pillar of the community

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You known most of these buildings fell down because of the earthquakes? Build a pyramid!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Introducing: The Columnid.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's all fun and games until the earthquake strikes. Boom, you'd have a pillar on your chest... or at least shit your toga.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Turkey has plenty of earthquakes and those pillars are still standing, it'll be fiiiine

*Stares in Mausoleum of Halicarnassus*

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Would've probably been people sitting there talking, gossiping, random wood stalls, pots, worn sandals, muddy clothes, etc. Like, stuff.

ancient Greek dude: "Yassas, I've been trying to reach you about your chariot's extended warranty"

Say what you will about assassin's Creed, at least they know how to bring an ancient civilization back to life

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

AC Odyssey is my favorite. I've tried about 4 of them. I still detest the modern day shit. So useless.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And probably a whole load of poo

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

You just can't please some people..

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

meth heads, for sure

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Depends on what type of neighborhood it was

4 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

From the street and the ruins you can tell this was a major street, and people living there weren't poor.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Shoulda took pictures, duh.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Also some hay bales strategically placed next to the tall buildings.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I mean, we still have those.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

American prisons are full of them.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, that's what I love about Pompei. It's the still image of a living city, with all the small things that make you feel it. And a brothel.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Except for the casts of dead bodies

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I mean it looks like it could be from the game.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It is a known fact that the Greeks based a lot of their architecture on AC: Odyssey

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Funny… vice versa
