Now say it with me.. cloned monocultures are the source of disaster - for example for the cavendish. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavendish_banana#Diseases .. if it comes to sex, you don't fuck around with horny jail and resort to mono-cultured clones. First success then fall.. thus ended the lesson.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marbled_crayfish Blind repetition without variation is a deadly disease in itself.

Cutting machines that operate cyclically and not via pedal/handle spook me the fuck out. Fingers disappear once people get comfy with them.

Do plants know which way is up? Or does it just send out a branch and if it's touching dirt it says, that one becomes a root?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Finally something that can be made on the floor

My great grandpa worked on a sugar cane farm in PR in the 40s. This is super cool to see

For anyone wondering it takes 9-16 months from the nodes(planting it) to harvest

fun fact: bamboo is a grass but is about as resillient as a weed. extremely hard to get rid of.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Meanwhile, here in America that shit is horribly invasive

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

In the house we just sold in Florida, we have sugar cane growing in the backyard. It's wonderful. We could harvest it in the fall and it's so fun to cut up into strips and chew on.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No WONDER I can’t get rid of the bamboo in my yard…

2 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 5

Less-invasive varieties exist and are now more commonly sold for use in gardens. Knowing that won't do much good for you, though. Sorry.

This is sugarcane

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

cut close to ground, leave 5 inches. use a big syringe/pipette n drip RoundUp right in the hollow stems. repeat a couple of times. Success

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I will try it… Thanks.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

been doing that in our garden to the shoots coming over from the neighbours garden. its slow going but so far, we ve been victorious

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Because you're too deep in a sugar coma to do yard work?

If the world survives it's gonna be constantly doing things like this on a mass scale to provide food

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We already do that. It's how we get the food that we have.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We have and will have plenty of food to feed everyone now and for the foreseeable future, it's just not distributed properly or it's deliberately being prevented by politics and/or greed.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Isn't that by and large what modern large-scale agriculture is already doing?

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

About 50-50 in the posts. Surely someone actually knows (I don't!) whether this is bamboo or sugar cane.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Obviously sugar cane, but i can see whe the americans might struggle, i mean they cant even get cane sugar in their coke /s

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The good ole' USA proudly consumes about 11 Million metric tons of sugar a year and close to 50% of it is American grown.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Doesn't seem hollow enough for bamboo.

Do.... Do you guys not know what sugar cane is? Comments have me like

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Many folks will never have seen it. It was a good, cheap snack in east Africa

https://hafoodtours.com/vietnamese-food-drink/sugarcane-juice-nuoc-mia/

Fresh stuff crushed with a few kumquats is outstanding.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No. Sugar cane only grows in the US in TX, LA, and FL, so that's millions of people who can go their entire lives without seeing unprocessed sugar cane

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Though it's also sold in grocery stores in many other states beyond those. Hell, there's a dude who sells it out of a grocery cart near me.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only ever seen it in mojitos.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If a neighbour pissed me off enough I'd secretly plant bamboo and mint in a few places on their property

I remember a field trip when I was around 8. We went to some farm in New Orleans and got to hand pick fresh sugar cane, then we went to a really cool gift shop. On the bus ride back, someone stole my $200 bag of stuff I was taking back for my family. Pretty sure it was my bitch of a teacher, fuck you Patsy!

2 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

That sucks... You should look up her socials if she's still alive.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

if not leave a dick butt on her memorial page.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Holy shit $200 given to an 8 year old

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Who gives an 8 year old $200?

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

It was money given to the teacher directly cause she “was” a family friend outside of school

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A business with overpriced goods I hope, since the actual cost wouldn't really be $200. But I could see rich parents doing that as well.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not rich, but my brother missed the trip and we knew the teacher outside of school as a “family friend”. Not so much after that trip. Was the first and only field trip we ever “participated” in. Every other time we just skipped school and got ice cream/went to the movies

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I understand your belief that you weren't rich, but for many (myself included) the middle class lifestyle you enjoyed as a child makes you rich. I'm middle class now and have a 7yo son. I won't be giving him $200 when he's 8.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's the field trip notice printed specially for the rich wine moms.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Spent over £1000 trying to get rid of a long row of bamboo, it's gone, but every summer it just pops up in random places in the middle of my lawns.

2 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 4

Are you talking about my yard? I feel as though we have the same yard.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Speaking as a landscaping expert, use Roundup

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Embrace the invasion!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

cut the stems leave bit left over. use a big syringe/pipette n drip RoundUp right in the hollow stem. repeat a couple of times. Success

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Serious request to hear how you got rid of it. I’m trying to remove ivy and bamboo the previous owners planted.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, the video shows the growing for sugarcane, not bamboo.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

We are looking at sugarcane here.

2 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

Lessons I've learned - never get involved in a land war in Asia and NEVER plant bamboo

2 years ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 1

Or creeping fig and several others. I finally won the fight battle.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or if you do plant bamboo make sure it's clumping bamboo and not running bamboo. Still annoying to get rid of, but at least they generally only spread a few inches per year.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Is the bamboo Sicilian?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

plant some mint near it, thatll get rid of the bamboo if anything can

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Then? Guessing oil or salt?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

dont be silly, its mint, you need napalm

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or some Knotweed

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Noooooo

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't call it not weed unless it wasn't not knotweed. How else can you confuse the police if they ask if you if you're carrying anything that is illegal that is not knotweed?
