People of the United States of America

Aug 26, 2017 9:21 AM

I read that rescue operaters request people write their names and social security numbers on their arms for easier identification when finding people - dead or alive.

I seriously wish you all the best of luck.

Get out if you can. Stay safe.

That's the first I've heard of this... seems like a scare tactic: "if you don't evacuate, put SSN on arm cus you'll die for sure."

Evacuated to San Antonio. Our hometown, Victoria, got/is being blasted.

i like how outsiders think Texas is the United States of America. you're godamn right.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

The hurricane fortunately struck in a very low-population area. Still a lot of rain and misery to go, though.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OP, you are sweet to post your concern. As a resident of the USA, thank you.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Yeah OP!

The SSN arm thing is only for those remaining in Rockport, Texas. Houstonian here, thank you for your concern, we will try to survive.

I'm headed to Texas right now as part of a search and rescue asset.. USCG rescue swimmer ooh rah!!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Houstonian here! Thank you. By saying USA,I knew you meant Texas. Please to everyone else, please look up places to donate the affected area

Update from the San Antonio Airport: flight still scheduled, lower gastrointestinal distress, and preflight anxiety

8 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 1

Right? I'm flying in from Argentina, I feel they are flying us straight into the damn thing!

But I'm sure United knows what they are doing :)

I walked through a tornado once. To be fair, I didn't know it was a tornado.

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Good story, Dorothy.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Chilling in California like...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This thank you

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's the problem with how big the US is, being in California, I'm so disconnected that it might aswell be another country with a hurricane

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Maybe they mean for the heatwave we are about to get?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ugggh. I just saw our forecast. Ten more days straight of triple digits. No thank you.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dallas resident here. Sucks to suck Houston

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So is this about the political or environmental climate? Either would work at the moment.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm here in Massachusetts, I'll do my best.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Texan here from Victoria it is crazy right now with a lot of water some pieces of the roof have blown off. Will try to keep you all posted.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Please be okay my fellow American!!!!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fellow Texan, stay safe. ????

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1/2 The "write your ID info on your arm" thing is something those who refuse to evacuate extremely high risk areas are told. While it could

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2/2 be helpful in rescue and recovery I think it's also meant to scare people and make them understand the risk of staying.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They keep telling me a tornado is like fifty feet from me. I don't know

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not New Orleans. Texas will be ok. They are not beneath sea level.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 11

Over 3 feet (almost a meter) of rain expected on the Texas coast, that's tough anywhere.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

True. We will take care of them...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You don't know how true this is. Michigan got hit with 10-12 inches of rain in an hour and devastated us. 36 is catastrophic.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Flooding is still a massive issue in Texas, even though they're above in most areas.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Also, last i heard it was a cat 3. Not a 5.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

It got to cat 4 a few hours before landfall

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

News is saying it's back down to cat 1 now. Main danger at this point is flooding, not debris falling out of the sky.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I believe that request was mainly for people directly in the path of the hurricane

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's not a dick measuring contest. People's lives are going to be affected still.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

I still remember doing clean up after ike. We lost whole towns.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup. Houstonian here, My fam is ready to help anyone in our neighborhood. Our house does not flood, it's in stilts.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Operaters

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Americans and their social security number ... have you all memorized that number?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope, we just keep the little card somewhere in our homes or wallets

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Anyone who doesn't memorize it is a bit slow.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Update from Houston: constant tornado warnings, kinda windy outside, hurricane woke my ass up already so i guess i'll start drinking.

8 years ago | Likes 314 Dislikes 1

As a fellow Houstonian, I hadn't even considered drinking yet. Thanks for the tip!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kinda windy. Love that. Stay safe

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Another Houstonian! Just hoping I bought enough beer to ride this one out

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll watch the rain and have some shiner bock with you.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good luck to you! Fellow Texan herr but further south. You all be safe.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I live in Bellaire...not even raining here!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My street is fine but I hear I'm surrounded by flooded interactions already.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sameeeeee. There's little rain, thunder, wind, fallen branches here and there. Seems like normal Houston to me

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The rain has just really started in Houston - it's going to be very wet for the next few days.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fellow Houstonean here woke me up at 5:30, I proceeded to go back to sleep

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So pretty much an average Saturday in Texas.

8 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Houston here, still got power, fuck yeah. And wasn't it the mayor of Rockport that said write your name an social on your arm with a sharpie

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yes it was

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes it was. Since people decided to stay even tho there was a mandatory evacuation

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

-mans the anti air gun- BRING IT ON HURRICANE BITCH

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ouch. You guys stay safe out there alright? Shoulda got out while you could imho but hindsight is always 20/20

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

Houstonian here. I still have power too. I live 5 min, southeast side from downtown.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

its really not bad, i mean i still have power

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Houston's fine, thankfully it's the more suburban/rural areas south of Houston that got hit. Death toll would have been larger otherwise

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Most of Houston was told to stay put. Flooding is what's gonna get us, being on the road under water would be worse than at home boozin :)

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Galvestoner... My powers out :(

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Stay safe fellow Texan. It starts at noon for us.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Uf. Thoughts are with galvestoners and everyone to the south of them. Can't complain about Houston in context. Be safe!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No shit? I'm over here in League City, it's been windy af, but that's about it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's rainy and our power was knocked out late last night

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Stay save. I know it's cliche, but we're praying for our Texans here in Houston.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not really raining atm. We've been walking around and looking at the seawall

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Go to Austin. I heard they have Powers :)

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

We do have the powers in the ATX.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Finlandian here - is there a difference between a tornado and a hurricane?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hurricanes are generally powerful 'tropical storms' that form over the sea and occasionally make landfall. They are seen days/weeks ahead.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tornadoes spawn from thunderstorms, and as a result, are smaller, though not less intense in the worst area(?). Seen hour/mins. ahead.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

More flying cows and other farm animals in Tornados.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Are flying farm animals the official parameter, which defines the name of the storm?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are many scientific measures; farm animals, number of people filming on social media like dipshits, if the weather channel showsup, etc

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People of Texas are in the danger zone. The rest of us will be watching the McGregor Mayweather fight.

8 years ago | Likes 799 Dislikes 5

The fight so hype, even god himself wanted to throw some hands

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You still have to deal with Trump, so, yeah, Good luck, and don't forget to arm-stamp those security details.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

we're all just hoping that this weather doesn't interfere with watching GOT tomorrow

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

So much for global warning, with all this water the fires will go right out!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WHHHATTTT!? DID I HEAR MAYWEATHER?! HYPE FOR THE FIGHT?!.!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not all of the people in TX are in danger. I'm about 400 miles away, and still in TX

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is there a highway?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Danger zone.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Went to the bar last night while waiting for the next arm to hit us. That's what they lamented most. Every channel on the storm.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We're still ok though.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You think a lil storm is gonna stop me? You underestimate Texas son.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or helping people evac in the northwest

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Are they in danger cause folks want to shoot the hurricane in texas or why?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't even know these names, I will be playing steam games a d sleeping.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your president is still donald trump.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And don't forget GoT tomorrow!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its not mayweather you want to worry about. Augustweather is far more dangerous.

8 years ago | Likes 252 Dislikes 1

This is stupid. But here's an upvote

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That depends on if you're McGregor or a Texan

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

April showers bring May flowers.

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

Mayflowers bring pilgrims.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Pilgrims bring smallpox and cholera and alcoholism

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

April most dangerous month, determined.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Watch a master boxer give a really expensive lesson to a dude who has never professionally boxed before? I don't think so.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I'm not sure I'd call it an expensive lesson for McGregor, he's walking away with probably 100 mil and Mayweather will probably play it safe

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean I know that's almost assuredly going to be the case. I can still hope that somehow mayweather is going to get the beating he deserves

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I hope McGregor forgets himself for a moment and does an elbow on Mayweathers face or something.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have a $5 bet running with a guy that McGregor gets frustrated and kicks him

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nothing too great but he had a few hammer blows that were entertaining.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a Floridian, do you know how big the US is? I thought "omg what big terrorist shit is it this time" but no, you meant the Texas hurricane

8 years ago | Likes 284 Dislikes 4

The US is barely as big as the Sahara Desert.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

It's not even the majority of Texas (or Texans) that are any imminent danger. The beaches in San Diego is closer for the people of El Paso

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I thought OP was talking about the seven and a half years (yeah, I went there) left of our president's terms.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 8

I'm with you.. I woke up and I was like oh shit where is my pen gotta start identifying myself. And then I was like.. I'm goin back to sleep

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

As a Texan, I'm not worried about it as I'm still a six hour drive from the coast.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Yup it's pretty big untill you realize all the oil refineries in Texas being hit.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's about as big as Australia. Your point?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

I think that still applies regardless, shits just bad everywhere

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yes, I ment Texas. And no, I do not fully understand the size of your country.

8 years ago | Likes 111 Dislikes 5

We still appreciate the love, OP. Texas would be a 2-3 day drive for me, so even tho I'm safe, I have friends there. Thank you!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

http://thetruesize.com Just name a country, drag to wherever for comparison, it scales to deal with the problems of flat maps.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For perspective, I'm in north Texas which isn't the northernmost part, and a city 3 hrs south of here is in no danger from the storm.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Most US citizens don't understand the size of our country.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's ok. A lot of people in the US don't realize how big Texas is. If you were to drive the most direct route across: 1,370 km

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You don't understand things that have no relevance to your everyday life shame on you

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Check out http://thetruesize.com

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's really cool as a geography buff.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I don't know why people are giving you a hard time for caring about Texas and acting like the rest of the U.S. doesn't care

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 1

Texas is so big you can fit Texas in it.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

You mention that and not the fact that the entire globe is in there

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you cut Alaska in half Texas would be the third biggest State

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now you're thinking like a Texan!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For perspective Texas is twice the size of Germany, and California is slightly larger in total area, though oddly shaped

8 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 0

Actually, Texas is still larger than CA. ( Total area in sq miles ) TX= 268,580.82 miles. CA=163,695.57 miles.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

poor grammar on my part. California is slightly larger than Germany, no TX

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And Alaska is bigger then both of them and Montana put together. But what's fun about that fact, is the population of Alaska is about a 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

10th of all of those states put together.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Think of it like Western Europe and if each state was a country. Driving from one city to another in the same state can take 3+ hours

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Wow. two hours drive and I've passed six towns. Not big ones, but still

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I live in a tiny state. 2 hours will get you from one end to the other the short way. The long way is 4 solid hours on the highway.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well he means big cities, you'd probably pass 30 towns between

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can drive for eleven hours in TX and still be in TX. It's the route from Amarillo to McAllen.

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Oh sorry you do pass towns, did not mean that it's all inhabited land between the two cities

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Though there are stretches like that in the western desert.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

At least 3 days to drive from coast to coast in the USA.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Took 2 1/2 days from San Francisco to Atlanta. Did it twice, would not recommend.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

From LA to San Antonio, took me like 24 hours.
