Among all the other horrible things the Nazis did, they ruined the swastika. Aside from being a common geometric shape, it's very.......

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Important in many Asian cultures. My GF is Indian and jokes that her family has a swastika they're always hesitant to bring out.

Not saying they’re off the hook, it’s The Times, but…if you google how to avoid swastika quilt” you’d be surprised. Just sayin’.

At least 1 nazi website devoted to Jews working in media reference “it’s a coincidence”. These fucking scumbags should not be tolerated.

3 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 3

Considering this happened in 2017 as well, "once a coincidence, twice a pattern"

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Same editor put out a swastika shaped minicrossword on the game app in 2014 too, with the 1st answer being Jew...soooo...

What is she talking ab--

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

This is a huge fuckup, but it is not "incredibly difficult" to see this as an accident. This is a problem that pops up with crossword

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

puzzles. They should have caught this, but come on people, the New York Times is not deliberately waving swasticas on the first night of

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hannukah. The Editor in Chief of NYT is Jewish, the owners are part Jewish. This is the sort of knee-jerk assumption of an evil plot that

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

QAnon morons do. It was a just a fuckup - a bad fuckup that should have been caught (and no, I'm not a nazi sympathizer for saying this)

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Holy hell. That is unsettling.

Lol, the one from Saturday was SS. I'll post in comment to this comment. Spoiler, the image is both nazi, and a complete crossword puzzle.

Honestly i kinda agree

Indeed.

My dumb ass was looking at the questions and not the puzzle box.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My dumbass was reading the clues and then I saw the puzzle structure… Apparently they didn’t notice a blatant swaztika?

3 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 3

I can't quite see it, like, I am aware it is there, but I can't actually see it

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I scrolled up three times after checking a few comments. I caught it before yours so I caught it on my own, but still, not my best work.

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Clearly it’s easy to miss, if one focuses on the clues more than the layout…

3 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I did the same thing for a few seconds. Then scrolled down tot he comments and found out this is the third time they've posted a swastika...

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Holy fuck! Thanks to the ones who pointed that out to me. Fuckers will never die down!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 7

No they didn't. It's banned for use in ENTERTAINMENT.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s the second time they’ve done it.

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

I'll bet nazis and white supremacists would say "hey! You know what would be a cool thing to do a Hanukkah? Do a nazi dog whistle! "

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Then why do so many people think it looks like a swastika, while none of the people who approved the crossword noticed the same thing?

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

and notice the date... this has happened before and was their response in *2017* ... you'd think they'd be more careful now.

I’m sorry, I have to ask... ‘beaner’ is a slur? I’ve never ever heard that before. (I am Canadian so maybe it’s a regional thing?)

3 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

It’s a slur against Mexicans.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It is absolutly a slur in the US, directed at Latin immigrants, usually Mexicans

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In California - it's a slur for someone of Hispanic / Latinx heritage. For the western US, it's mostly Mexican - but may be used elsewhere.

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I was looking up why and I found a familiar face...

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Also canadian. Also never had heard of it. Also have used it for being hit by a ball in soft/baseball.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not as bad as "wetback" in general, and depending on the company not at all. I've been called worse.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

And having played baseball for decades, I've never heard a beanball, a throw at the head, called a "beaner."

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've only heard "beanball."

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In Texas it's a slur.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's derogatory towards Hispanic people, usually Mexicans.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a Californian. Yes it is.

3 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

From south Florida, it is absolutely a slur.

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

From the Midwest, it is a slur I've heard a lot growing up here.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The coffee shop Biggby used to be called Beaners until they were forced to change their name as they became more popular

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think I first heard it on a Cheech and Chong movie

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

are we supposed to do the crossword?

3 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 10

It's a Hakenkreuzworträtsel.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh. Are we supposed to do the hakenkreuzworträtsel?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if you look at the actual puzzle it looks like a swastika, top right

3 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

OH

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Please help me out. I don’t want to solve the puzzle. What’s it about?

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

The puzzle shape is the exact shape and orientation of the Nazi Swastika, and it was in today's paper which is the 1st night of Hanukkah.

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

if you look at the actual puzzle it looks like a swastika, top right

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

That's not a good swastika though.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It's definitely close enough to be a problem. It's even right-directioned and turned by 45°.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is real... I did not see that coming from NYT.

3 years ago | Likes 181 Dislikes 4

if they truly didn't realize (which I don't believe for a second) then that shows how ignorant and privileged they are

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Normally I'd just think someone thought it was a neat design without thinking, but the timing and fact this isn't the first time...

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

"no one sits down to make a crossword puzzle and says..." So they were standing up and decided a swasi was the way to go?

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Do you mean...you did Nazi that coming?

3 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 1

No, because that makes nein sense.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ends up when you make rationally symmetrical patterns out of squares swastikas just happen. Still you'd think NYT would avoid it

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 5

Don't they claim each one is proudly hand made and personally selected and approved by the editor?

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I've played enough Minecraft to have made all sorts of designs, then I look at it again the next day and its clearly a swastika.100% mistake

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now, NYT should be careful enough to double check that sort of thing before publishing, esp cause this has happened before.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was reading through all the clues like "I dont understand, what's wrong...". I didn't even look at the puzzle itself until I saw this.

3 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Me too, man, me too!

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I honestly couldn't tell what was wrong with this until I saw it zoomed out. I was trying to solve it to see if the answers were offensive.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

... Did they use the same layout from 2017 or how did that one look for comparison sake.

3 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

The 2017 one is a Swastika but not a Nazi Swastika. It turns counter-clockwise and is not tilted 45 degrees.

3 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Ah, you mean "Manji". Which does symbolizes different meanings than the hooked cross "Hakenkreuz" that people call a swastika. >

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That said, it has the same editor, which others have pointed out has been doing weird shit, so it was likely meant to be the Hakenkreuz.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

(Hakenkruez is the proper name of the nazi swastika, and it makes it easier to separate the symbol of hate it is from other cultures that >

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He's the only one. Any puzzle after 1993 was edited by Will Shortz.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

That’s not a swastika, that’s a boring looking crossword puzzle.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

honestly this one is LESS sus. That's pretty clearly just the unfortunate result of four rectangles intersecting in the middle. Today's tho

3 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

indeed. i made a cool flying shape for my 3d printer, printed it, and realized it was just a swastika with a ring added. big yikes moment.

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Some of the best boomerangs I had growing up were 3 pronged “swastikas”.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Swastika is a cool symbol, also represents pretty positive things before the nazis took it and ruined it :(

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I can understand that. Back when Avatar first came out I drew Sokka’s boomerang. Then thought to myself “what if it more like a 1/?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm gonna confess to something here. I don't know if it's because I have ADD or what, but I am shockingly unobservant when it comes to>

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

And this is not the first time it's happened with the Times, so those editors should be specifically checking at this point.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For context, this is the THIRD time the NYT has published a swastika crossword. And, per a graphic designer on Twitter...

3 years ago | Likes 174 Dislikes 2

It's really easy to accidentally swastikas, BUT it's also easy to catch yourself before you commit.

3 years ago | Likes 153 Dislikes 1

as someone who plays rimworld, its so easy to accidently do this with hydroponics basins. cause its the efficent shape

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean, you're not creating basins for the public, so why not.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

also to be fair. its not the worst thing you can do in rimworld

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Especially since the NYT claims each puzzle is hand made and personally selected by the editor directly.

3 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 1

Also somehow inexplicably hard.

3 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

OMG, the only thing that pisses me off more than a swastika is a badly drawn one. Like, bitch, it's the simplest symbol after the cross!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

REVIEW: 1. Check clues for spelling & accuracy. 2. Check answers for spelling & accuracy. 3. Check number placement. 4. Is it a swastika?

3 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

yep. i made a home made throwing thingy, like a frisbee but dangerous. after i 3d printed it i realized it was just a swastika overlapping>

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

a circle. so that sucked.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it's a maddingly common shape and it's kinda useful as well, especially when folding shit like boxes.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In a math class in 8th grade we were doing some geometry type drill and drawing shapes with lines and i could NOT stop drawing accidental 1/

3 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It's going to show up randomly among other lines in a rectangular grid. Quite different from having an entire crossword being one big one.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't say it's different at all honestly, it's just the product of a geometric pattern, in this case filling the whole page. The 1/

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

problem here is the timing, but otherwise it's basically a pinwheel. Like it's a pattern that, without inherent racism, would exist as 2/

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

swastikas because of how the grid was set up and whanot, there was only so many ways the lines can go, arg! 2/2

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Doing some electronics with Raspberry Pi, 6x6 LED grid. You want to make a pattern repeatable through 90 degrees. 1/

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

90% of what you make is a swastika. 2/2

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just cancelled my subscription.

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 7

oh god. Overreacting much?

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 19

Is it really overreacting to choose not to give money to people that make swastikas'? Is there a point where we are allowed to stop

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

supporting nazis, or are we morally obligated to do so indefinitely?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Found the nazi

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

How does not canceling a Times subscription over a mistake that vaguely resembles a swastika make one a Nazi?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

This is more of that "everyone I don't like is Hitler" stuff if ever I've seen it. In the United States we have a bunch of actual fascists

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

growing increasingly powerful but this is what people choose to focus on rather than the actual fucking nazis.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2
