man that net one is deep.

The word bed looks like a bed.

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

That last one tho...........

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Legitimately one of my worst fears. Because I actually woke up during a surgery once and remembered it.

"Fuck you." -Annette

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah yes, the shower. Many a great thought were had in there. I like to think I'll one day cure cancer in my shower

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was shadowin in an Operating room, and the guy did yell out when they first started cutting, but they upped his meds so he'd stop flinchin

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Many drugs that "knock you out" for surgery prevent you from forming memories, not make you unconscious. Wikipedia "Twilight Anesthesia".

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

right but you don't give those drugs without a sedating agent. Propofol has made this obsolete since its both and is a fast inducer.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Anesthesia does wipe memory. 3 components immobility analgesia and amnesia

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If you're under going surgery on Versed, you basically are awake and have your memory wiped clean 0..o

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Upvote, but only because of the last one.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

That dog one though. I'm pretty sure this is true.

12 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

And utterly devastating. I already feel guilty leaving my dogs at home... Now I feel at least 10x worse.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always thought it was kind of like pack instincts.

As someone who has had two surgeries while awake, I wish I had some forget gas.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I request more of these post haste.

12 years ago | Likes 316 Dislikes 3

Posted: please post more posts similar to this post post haste. ..but really, I'd like an ongoing series of these

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This made me think, "I like this post, another!"

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Another is a weird looking word

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Serious upvotes for using "post haste". Props, friend.

/r/showerthoughts. It's a fantastic subreddit.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Haha I understood the G reference.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oral surgery assistant here.... People wake up all the time during surgeries, but the anesthesia makes you not remember anything.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I remember.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That is not funny. omg

These aren't random.. just stolen from /r/showerthoughts.

12 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 6

I can confirm

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep, I'm the person who posted the first one.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Randomly selected from r/showerthoughts, and thus random shower thoughts?

12 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

i saw it in usersub llonger than 4hrs ago too, pics in a different order

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I posted this in both since I use both. Didn't think it would hit front page tho

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

welp the anesthesia one just gave me a fucking panic attack

12 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

When I had my wisdom teeth surgically removed I was given a gas and told that I would be awake for the surgery but wouldn't remember it.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didn't remember it either. There was actually a cool time jump.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately there is some truth to it. They give you something that does wipe your memory IN CASE you wake up so you don't sue them.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

that is no where near close to the reason to give an amnestic. Baseline patient comfort factors majorly into physiological parameters.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That too. PS my info came from an anaesthetist in Australia.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They were messing with you lol 140 characters isn't enough space to list why we need amnesia for surgery

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and making sure a patient is not anxious, has no chance of awareness or memory will limit complications during and after surgery.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Take a picture of your penis when flaccid, masturbate to it. Problem solved.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The anesthesia one is partially true. Anesthetics not only block pain and slow our nervous system (knock us out) but also prevent memories!

12 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 1

Barbiturates :)

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Usually benzodiazepines in modern medicine. The drug of choice in Finland is usually midazolam.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was going to mention this. Thanks for doing it for me!

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And if a patient seems to be awake/partially awake during an operation, the first thing is to give medication that blocks memories.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It also relaxes and sedates, so it's not just to block memories.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sort of... They prevent the formation of new memories. Memories that already exist are stored through a different pathway that is (1/2)

12 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

(2/2) unaffected by the anesthetic.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Oh I know, that's what I was implying. I literally used all of my word count though and didn't include "new" haha

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Ah, then don't mind me. I'm just a science nazi.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Josef Mengele?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Touche.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People would know the truth about the anesthetic thing because all the doctors and nurses would know you were awake

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Actually, Versed (common for conscious sedation) does help people forget what happened while they were "under."

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

upvoting you and the original commenter because your usernames go together.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had that done when I had my wisdom teeth out. I think "forget" needs to be in quotation marks.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

you weren't dosed well. Versed is a benzo which is an anxiolytic at low dose, sedative at medium and hypnotic at high. You have a high EC50

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Eh, it was free. I'm not complaining.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I read an article about a woman who was awake but paralyzed during surgery because the anesthesia hadn't worked properly. Effing terrifying.

12 years ago | Likes 106 Dislikes 2

I had a friend who had the same thing happen to him.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

It happened to my mom during back surgery. She could feel everything but couldn't even blink or do anything to let them know she was awake

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Isn't there a movie similar to that?

12 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Awake with Jessica Alba and Hayden Christensen was quite popular.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

There was a Nip/Tuck episode when that happened.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

My father was an Anesthesiologist. Oftentimes, he said, people had no conscious memory of invasive procedures, but if they had to (1/2)

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

undergo a 2nd surgery, they were inexplicably anxious. Their vital signs leading into a subsequent procedure would be elevated.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Great. I'm going in for surgery tomorrow...can't wait.

12 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

meh :( Don't be afraid! At what time? (and in which timezone are you living?) - I'll think of you then!

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They monitor your heart and brain activity so they know somethings is wrong if anything like this happens; you have nothing to worry about.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My entire family is allergic to anesthesia. We very commonly wake up during surgeries. It takes 3x dosing to keep me under.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Wait, if you're allergic how can you use it?

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

After the procedure. It's basically like the body expelling it as quickly as possible because it doesn't get along well with us.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's not like a normal "break out in hives and swell" allergy. It just ends up being processed very quickly, and making us EXTREMELY sick..

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

oooh so your body metabolizes it super quick? Weird! When I got my wisdom teeth taken out the anesthesia made me feel super nauseated

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it's no fun. I usually opt for "twilight" which is exactly what this quote speculates. You're awake, but you don't remember anything.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually... that's kind of how Versed works- it helps you forget what happened, which is why some people refuse to take it before surgery.

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Yup all benzos and barbiturates have memory impairing effects. But mostly they anesthetize the patients.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True that's how that drug is supposed to work. I think these people are referring to anesthetics that don't work correctly.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Also propofol. Makes you forget.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not to mention um... um... Makes you

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, when my dad had brain surgery to remove an aneurysm he was on propofol

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

people don't get to refuse an induction agent. Its up to the anesthesiologist, midazolam like all hypnotics needs to be titrated to an

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

amnestic dose otherwise it functions like all benzos as just a sedative. If you're patient isn't dropping you up the dose. plain and simple

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I really doubt you know what "plain and simple" means

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

sigh i thought i was simplifying it lol
