Every time I see this everyone's like "I know it's an unreasonable fear but..." No, it is not unreasonable. It's a legitimate fear and you should drive defensively with regards to it. Crashes happen. Negligence happens.
We're re-watching the whole series, and while the characters are screaming and dying we're just scrutinizing the scenery, gleefully identifying filming locations we recognize in and around Vancouver. [Leonardo DiCaprio on couch, pointing]
This was the island highway...I think Highway BC-19 is just south of Courtenay, BC, or off exit 117. Grew up in the area, had friends in HS who got to be vehicle extras. Awesome experience all in all.
I remember this happening to someone in Seattle many years back. They were driving down I-5 and a big sheet of metal slipped off a truck. Basically guillotined the driver.
Something similar happened near my town a few years back. A bunch of rebar or something similar came loose on a truck and ripped a guy apart. My husband got called to the scene but luckily all the body parts had been cleaned up by then. Just a bunch of blood left :/
It may have been 22 years for you. But 15 years ago for me, I had something like it actually happen. Load of grocery store shelves fell off a truck and smashed my car, only inches away from my head.
Reminds me of Get Smart: Are you thinking what I'm thinking? - I don't know, were you thinking "Holy shit, holy shit, a sword almost went through my head."?
One of my favorite openings of a "Final Destination" movie. The commentary track reveals that they tried to film with real logs falling off a truck, but the logs wouldn't bounce. So the falling logs were done with CGI.
I was born in logging country and when I was a small child there were at least 3 trucks that overturned onto other cars killing the drivers. So they scared me. They also drove really, really fast on curvy roads.
Same, and that was when there were still some big f’n trees left. Not unusual to see a truck with only 3-5 big ass logs needed for a full load and occasionally just one or two.
I saw the Devil driving a logging truck over Independence Pass, Idaho during a snowstorm. Power sliding down the mountain past me, smoking a cigarette, rowing through the gears. Top 10 true fear moment in 56 years.
The logging tricks always get really mad at me when I have to drive the back roads. Like, I'm sorry my guy but I'm hauling 60k pounds and I'm not familiar with these roads. And I'm not insane. You can wait behind my truck like everyone else on this god forsaken road.
It would be scary, but yes it would be painless. With the speed that log went thru the car in the movie, it would have been over before his nerves even processed the pain signal.
The log actually slows down from the trucks traveling speed after hitting the road a few times. It's the police car, that has the speed. So, it was the cop hitting the log. The log is innocent.

If you drive behind any truck that has logs/pipes/whatever long thing that could come at you...you're an idiot.

I'd kinda welcome it at this point.

Never seen a log fall off, but I have seen a Mercedes fall off. Gets your attention real quick.

I know for a fact this movie was only 12 years ago if even that long ago.

"Sometimes a Great Notion" was 1971 - which only seems like 22 years ago.

Thank goodness safety regulators are being offered early retirement.

With the cost of housing today I'd sure as hell start charging it rent.

In this economy, wouldn't be a bad wat to go, quick and hopefully painless.

Either way, he wouldn't have actually processed any sensations beyond (maybe) fragmented windshield glass bouncing off him for a fraction of a second.
