Finished photo first of course.
After ripping out the existing wall we have a huge but complex space to work with.
Annoyingly the angled roof is on a 46° angle. That one degree meant I had to get the angles at 44° or 46° or the joints would be out - but I couldn’t ‘see’ if they were right when cutting them.
I was a bit worried about how clean the cuts would be. Circular saw, guide rail and cutting with a shallow backwards cut first resulted in a really neat finish. The Ikea laminate cuts really well.
First wardrobe unit in place. Not one wardrobe was a standard unit!
End of the second day - both wardrobe units in place in the ‘Narnia’ walk through wardrobe. There’s no back to the second wardrobe unit from the right which gives access to two shelving units.
Now this was tricky! I had to use trigonometry and everything!
Check out the angled section over the stairs bulkhead. Really chuffed with that bit!
Told you I was chuffed with it! Had to cut a channel in the angled piece for the section of back panel.
Closer view of the ‘Narnia’ wardrobe before the lighting was added.
The Ikea wardrobe lighting was incredibly easy to fit and works perfectly. The open one is my wardrobe... All the others are my wife’s!
First of the double depth units with shelving. These have turned out really well. One has hanging space at the front with shelves behind and the other just deep shelves.
Another tricky cut. Had to exactly match the unit behind and leave just enough depth at the front to fit a full door.
That’s all the units in place and the doors going on. The doors were cut to the right angle and then had oak edging band applied. I was worried about the finish at first but it looks perfect.
Almost done! Just the wall trim to put in now.
Since we were Ikea hacking I cut down a couple of Malm drawers to make a much more functional bedside table. I wish Ikea would sell these - even as an add-on kit it would be really easy to do.
And a smaller one for the other side.

This is like making a gourmet meal out of instant ramen noodles. Well done!

You well deserve to be fully chuffed. Nice work.

"The open one is my wardrobe... All the others are my wife’s!" Sounds about right. Really impressive build, great job!

It looks like a church wardrobe.
MrChurch
It's cool, but in my opinion,

That’s an incredible use of a space that look weird before, love that IKEA hack. I was about to complain why ikea didn’t sell those here lol
Pinaplewapi
Yayayay very nice
spacecadetglow
Great work! Love the bedside table hack - could you post some more pics of it and how you made it?
matthwk
I haven’t got any I’m afraid. I bought a two drawer unit to use for parts which did both conversions. Then just cut the drawer panels down.

When does the hacking come in
writetehcodez
How do you get to the Narnia thing though? looks like it's now blocked by hanging stuff.
matthwk
It’s definitely not for every day stuff but it’s great for rotating out winter clothes etc.
SomeOneHasBeenLookingForYou
Nicely done. I do Renos and use IKEA kitchen/pax almost exclusively. Have done similar - it’s such a headache but when it works out: glory!
Isorikk
How is this a hack? You literally built a wardrobe lol
jailorserry
This is really cool, but I am so tired of hearing the work "hack"
scotskies
Such an awkward space to work with and you've filled it well.
ZougasNewFist
I like how it doesn't look shit +1
tatt2br1an
Looks flimsy, is it flimsy? Alot of Ikea's stuff is a little flimsy
matthwk
These are rock solid. The laminate is thicker than any other stuff I’ve bought separately too so less prone to scratches and wear.
artbabi
Hey that looks pretty good!

I'm a Nerf Herder and my wife counts blue mailboxes- our budget is $3 Million.
matthwk
Lol. Love this!
JazzSpazzCat
Sending this to my fiance and telling him to save it. Lol
Tomadzo
Brilliant.
dolphindreamsandsatan
Given the 1:3 ratio on the hanging wardrobes, I'm pretty sure we can extrapolate as to whose bedside table is whose... ;-) Great job, @OP!
whooptydoo
The man gets the big end table, thats where you empty your pockets into at the end of the day!

I'm pretty sure Ron would not hack an IKEA wardrobe...

Wow would love a step by step guide for those drawers!
matthwk
It was fairly easy. I bought a two drawer unit to use for parts which did both conversions and then cut all the drawer panels down.
DigiT00l
Aren't they included in the flatpack?
matthwk
I really wanted half hight drawers which meant I needed two extra sets of runners. To keep the faces neat I cut down a full front for each.
DigiT00l
Fair enough
ArchitectMT
So I really like what you did here, but as someone with decent experience in traditional wood building is the ikea stuff cost effective?
matthwk
I haven’t really got any reference but I don’t think I could buy the parts cheaper. These were only £50 per unit. More for the interiors.
ArchitectMT
Also, I'm not knocking it. I like it. Just curious if traditional wood is more expensive than going to ikea.
HelloIAmAnInnocentBystander
I'd say yes, if you're going for whole units like here. The bare boxes are really cheap, it's the drawers and stuff where they get you.
ArchitectMT
Yeah was think the same thing. It's all the hardware and whatnot that's gonna be hard to beat.
matthwk
Definitely. When you add the interiors the price starts to go up fast. I don’t think you could get them much cheaper any other way though.
guineapigs12
That looks so slick, what was your total cost for materials?
matthwk
Thanks. The wardrobe carcasses were £50 each from Ikea. I think all in it was about £2000 including tools, lighting and interiors.
matthwk
Some tools. Not all of them. Needed a new circular saw with a guide rail - totally essential. And a bunch of clamps.
hippy80
Malm does have 1 stack, 2 drawer, side tables, source, I have a shot ton of them
matthwk
Yep. They don’t do a 1/2 drawer, 1/2 drawer, 1 drawer set. The 1/2 drawers are great for pocket ‘stuff’, a book and bedside stuff.
hippy80
Can I hire you do customise my Ikea stuff?
matthwk
Hah! Maybe once my DIY list is finished. Should be some time in 2050 or so!
deasmuth
Wow, you are very handy, well done. I hacked an Ikea bookshelf to hide a gun safe.
SirStrongBad
Neat. Pix?
