Keeping bees again after years off. This is my first nuc going into the hive. Second nuc goes in Saturday!

Pretty girls. I hear they have sweet side-rewards as well.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep but they refuse to wear the hats

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

From the thumbnail I though it was a box of huge Cuban cigars

9 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

Didn't notice it was bees until I read the caption. Thought someone fucked up some antique cubans

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These are Italians with a Russian queen

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hippie.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

Are they normally docile while you're transferring them and whatnot?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had to wait several days because of rain. A little smoke and common sense is all you need. If you're nervous so are they.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Spiral out, keep going

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

BEES!!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bee happy now!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Op I get mine in a few days. May I ask why u stopped for a while?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I moved to southern Texas for 2 years. Didn't want to transport my hives so gave them to neighbors. I'm back home now.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

To be clear--they probably would've survived the climate change but the local laws of where I was living were too constrictive.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good on you! Yay for bees!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thought the drones were all male, and the sole female was the queen?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You have worker bees too...they are female as well but can't breed

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Drones are male, there are workers that are female. The queen is the only female that mates/lays eggs

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well, I learned my one thing for the day. I can go back to bed. Lol. Thank you for the info, appreciate it

Uh huh. You're a stud hun

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How are they female tho?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All the workers are female all drones are male.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I see a boston terrier!!!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope. Boxer. That's Pollux. His fawn brother is Castor

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bawwwwww

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shame they're mostly boys.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

No, only drones are males. All the workers are female.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I stand corrected.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How do you not get the shit stung out of you without protective gear so close to the hive?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They don't sting just because you're near. They only sting when threatened. A little smoke, common sense, and calm handling works for me

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What sort of activity would count as threatening toward bees? Does smoke have a calming effect on them?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To them threatening is a lot of vibration, banging, swatting at them...and strangely the color black. The friggin hate it

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Re: smoke. No. It doesn't calm them but it does inhibit pheromones which is one way they communicate.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Common theory is they think there's fire so they go into "salvage everything!" Mode. They gorge on the honey etc...which keeps them busy

I thank you and your lesbian lover (I assume your a lesbian because...come on) for helping preserve the ecosystem.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For the uninitiated, what's a nuc?

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

A nuc is a small colony of bees broken off from a larger one with a queen to get them started.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I did not know that

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Short for nucleus?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yep

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1/2 A package is a 3 lb box of bees with a brand new queen. A nuc is 4-5 frames of broad and drawn comb with bees that are already...

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Hey Op would you do an AMA or story time? This would be super interesting!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sure. I'll get to work on it. I'm really happy people are interested.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks!!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 acquainted with their queen. She's already laying eggs...the broad is established

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Is broad like brood? What does broad mean in this context? Thanks, both for the info and beekeeping. As others have mentioned it's important.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes...ha! Sorry. I missed my typo. Thanks for catching

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah, ok. Thanks for clarifying.

Question: If I have a beehive at my house and don't want to destroy it will someone like you come get it?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

See if you can find a local beekeeper. They likely will come remove it for you.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Cool! Thanks!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes they will. Google the nearest beekeeper association. There is literally a waiting to grab these hives.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Thinking about trying beekeeping, although we have a bee/wasp problem around the house, would it be unwise to try? how much room is needed?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

1/2Wasps never interact with my bees. Not in 10 years. Neither do carpenter bees. You don't need much room at all. A small spot for a hive

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 and preferably a couple feet clear flight path out of the hive. I've seen hives on apartment balconies.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow, ok cool, couple more ?'S if you don't mind, would a shaded watery area work? (The back corner of my yard has a tree/ bushes that 1/?
