My artwork made the Contest finals!

First Washes

First washes always sets the tone for the piece. I decided to go with warmer colors for this piece to provide some contrast to the game.

tatoos

Once the form is set I can go nuts with a tiny brush and tatoos.

Fur....

Fur and the first layers of washes always seems so awkward.

Architecture

Using some cooler colors for the buildings to provide some contrast for the piece. I'm about 9 hours into the piece right now in a single stream.

Sketching the concept

I ended up selecting a concept that had the 2 main characters prominently in the shot. Choosing to do something action oriented and interactive with the background was key. Transferring from sketch to actual watercolor paper is always a challenge.

Blocking in figures

Adding in details whenever an area died out. No undo at this point.

Last minute details.

Touching up a few areas with Watercolor pencils (water soluble lead).

more fur and feathers

I'm sure the character designers really challenged themselves with all these different textures. Fur and feathers always have sooooo many layers to paint by hand. with I had some cut and paste at this point.

Painting Light and Shadows

Painting in the casted shadows to help highlight the lighter areas. Taking a damp brush and just blurring out some areas manually to achieve the photoshop blur effect.

My final watercolor piece
