I'm currently listening to the "World War Two" channel on Youtube while I work. They're up to the Soviet invasion of Finland, and the parallels with the Russian invasion of Ukraine are astonishing
On the one hand, I've always had an interest in history and a love of learning, but on the other so many things about history just make me sad. I wouldn't say any of it offends me though.
Also, ask yourself: "Who wrote this, and for whom?" Even recent events have been misconstrued and twisted. What more of things that happened 50+ years ago?
Why do we keep saying, “Learn from history.” ? Historians should learn from history that we don’t take that advice. I should learn from history that historians won’t learn from history that people won’t learn from history, but I won’t.
Wtf are you implying that we should be evolving? Learning? Progressing? Improving? You sound like some kinda god dang liberal! What we gotta do is turn back the clock to the good ole days when nobody but us white men had any rights!
Yes. But at the same time there is nothing wrong with deciding not to glorify. Majestic public statues are not history itself. They are there to glorify the acts. If we grow and become enlightened we can choose to demote that glorification if we collectively agree to do so. It doesn’t change history. That’s why statues of people like say for example , Stalin and others around the world are sometimes removed at the public’s behest.
History is never 100% accurate tho as old saying says "history is written by the victors" , im glad that soviet union "hero" and t34myth is finally going away , as someone from Poland it disgusted me in how much media portrayed soviet union/russians as heroes , despite they were as bad if not worse then nazi , ask any pole , baltic , slovakia/czech , romania , ukraine if soviet union were heroes in ww2.
Maybe offended is an imperfect term here. Maybe disgusted, ashamed, or upset is better, but history is offensive. It's no virtue not to ever be offended either. That either means you're not paying attention, or don't care.
I can be neutral towards a lot but if at any point I notice that i'm distracted from a part of history, whether it's anger or boredom or anything else that strafe my attention away, it's usually because there's something about it that I really need to look at. I'm probably not the first to feel that, making it ever more necessary to learn more about the "shit" I least want to look at.
This is-and-was really about the people in charge which is-and-was the rich. It was slave owners with money and slave owners who insisted on owning slaves that brought about the Civil War and after the war brought about “Lost Cause” revisionist history, and just like getting the masses to die for their cause they get the masses to “honor our heritage” with Civil War statues, Confederate flags, and claims of states rights which ultimately was about keeping them in power, not about “honor”.
To the conservative dictators out there, and also to everyone regardless of political leanings actively erasing or rewriting gay history and past actual human beings' identities.
This doesn't apply to Confederate statues. We shouldn't, and will most likely never, forget the Civil War and Slavery. We just shouldn't commemorate them in our public spaces. Put that in a museum. We don't want to see some old bigot who fought to keep owning humans as property when we're going for a walk in a park.

I did say “With all due respect”.

Problem is, people are reading it, getting offended by it, demanding no one else read it then repeating it themselves.

Just a reminder to Americans this applies to you no matter what side of the aisle you're on.

If you teach that no mistakes were made, many mistakes will occur.

We should want to be disgusted with the past. It would imply that we have and are learning from it.

History isn't there for you to learn from. You can and should learn from it, but that's not why it exists
PoopyProblem5
Whats with the photo? Those two gay?
mephiston
The problem comes not from remembering history, but people who fanatically worship it, or try to justify the bad parts. Education is key.

so edgy. Let me guess: statues are history?

was gonna use a gif but so many different assholes don't understand this message I'd fail to be sufficiently inclusive

If you're not at least a little offended you're not paying attention.

Confederate statues are not about History, but about The Lost Cause myth and supporting Him Crowe.
uououououo
The majority of the statues were built long after the war anyway.
AllisDashChalmersWasAnInsideJob
More akin to bigots throwing temper tantrums than "history and heritage"
uououououo
Considering how those bigots act today I'm fairly certain temper tantrums ARE their "history and heritage."
