He was the best guy. He stayed close to home, but hated being inside, even in the worst weather. I put a huge cat tree out for him, fed him the best food, built him little shelters all around my house, and did everything I could to keep him warm and safe.
The neighbor a few houses over abandoned their mean tomcat when they moved. He started running my kitty off when he wanted to take his food.
After a few days of not being able to stop him, I tried to find options for the mean cat.
I was too late. Last night, the neighborhood coyotes came closer than usual, and they got him after the mean cat chased him away.
I'm crushed. There is nothing more I could've done. I tried making him stay indoors many times, but he would just hide until he could sneak out.
Once outside, he was so friendly and loving. It's sad and I just wanted to tell someone.

**Front Page Edit**
Send cute kitties! Or cookies, if you have my address hah!

Thank you so much for the kind words. You guys are the best.
We've talked it over as a family and decided that the mean cat was already failed once when his family abandoned him. My sweet kitty wouldn't have hurt anyone or anything, so we won't, either. We are going to try to trap him, get him fixed, and offer him a chance at a life with people who care. Getting rid of him, no matter how, won't bring my kitty back. Maybe some kindness and trust will help.

I am going through a similar situation and it sucks. My daughter keeps opening the front door to see if kitty is there. Sorry for you loss.

I had an outdoor cat growing up who died too soon. Always comforted knowing that he lived a shorter but happier life outside. I’m sorry @op

Adopted a stray. Kept running outside but when I moved he stopped

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sure he would have rather spent 4 happy years inside than 10 years scared and uncomfortable inside. You did good OP

We have farm cats. We always lock them up at night in the shed. Sometimes they still get it from coyotes.

I’m very sorry for your loss. I’ve lost two cats in my life to coyotes, and it destroyed me.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry. I've had that happen to me too.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry for your loss. But know that you gave him the best of life and that he was loved and cared for. That means something

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So sorry, I feel your pain. Had to put down my Lab of 15 years yesterday.

Awwwe man! Labs are the best, I'm sorry. Hopefully you will get a new companion down the road.

People will build a hiding box with a hole only big enough for the cat to hide in around coyote country!

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

That's exactly what he had. Several of them.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Oh...then you did all you could

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I would have shot the tomcat.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thought about it....

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought it said waxed.......

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Doesn't everyone wax the cat?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not the literal cat.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've got a rescued outside cat like that. I bring her inside ever other day or so, but she just meows at the door.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Coyotes are detrimental to my family... over half of the chickens we have ever owned were killed by them and so many of my best barn cats1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I feel terrible but we have to kill them or they will kill all our livestock and mousers. They’ve even attacked a newborn foal before.

That's pretty funny, especially because I live in Phoenix so I get it

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry to hear that. We took in a feral-ish kitten but he doesn't mind staying inside. Sometimes there's only so much you can do.

8 years ago | Likes 392 Dislikes 5

Cats are adults for God's sake, it's ok to meet them and love them and let them live and die on their own terms <3

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My family took in a kitten we found on the side of the road because the mother had been run over and now to this day he lives to be around14

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yup. For my family it took 4 years to convince our cat to come inside and another 4 to get comfortable enough to stay inside overnight.

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Took in a feral kitten with pink eye, my grandma nursed it back to health and we named it Catzilla because of his huge personality 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

yeah personality let's go with that, despite his tough guy attitude when it was time for him to pass he came as close to us as his pride 2/3

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

would let him and made sure we knew he was there. i miss him. 3/3

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Coyotes got my Maine coon when he was 9. Was a miserable day

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Life of a badass!

Correct

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

I can relate. Had a cat 4 years, he was feral but loving. Always wanted to go outside. One day he never came back. I found his breakaway ..

8 years ago | Likes 124 Dislikes 1

.. collar intact about 1/2 mile away in the same neighborhood. I was never able to figure out what happened to him. That was 6 mo ago. :(

8 years ago | Likes 99 Dislikes 1

Some cats return when they are severely injured.

8 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 1

"Maybe if your cat gets horribly injured, then it will come back to you." That's worth an upvote.

8 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 1

It’s heart breaking. My little boy just had that wonder lust. He would wait by the door and dart out when you were coming inside. He would

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Always come back within the hour until one day someone swooped him up. They were in town visiting and took him with them back home to Denver

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A 100 miles away from me. They reported it to the humane society but when I called them to retrieve my cat, he had escaped that guys house.

I have 4 semi feral barn cats. This is my worst fear. Good on you giving a chance to those kitties that others might overlook.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All dogs go to Heaven, but cats go where they please. He'll always be out on your porch, waiting for you.

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Now I'm crying!! I sat out by his food dish for hours last night, just waiting. Hoping. I'll have to put it away today.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Or you could keep it out for the other cat. Either way, I wish you all the best. What was your kitty's name?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Other cat would be trussed up as dinner for the neighborhood coyote.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My little girl named him. PillarWillar.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That's a good name. Hope she's holding up OK.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

As a transplant living in LA, I think people have lost their minds when it comes to coyotes.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They have ascended back to the top of the food chain, and it seems like people are ok with them just carrying off whatever they want.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

it's crazy, seriously, when i hear stories like that i can only think of the usa being like a medieval warzone for pets of any kind.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You gave him a good home for 4 years and feed him, that's more than many would do for a feral, you went above and beyond, so don't be sad.

8 years ago | Likes 93 Dislikes 2

His cat got ripped to shreds by a wild dog... what shouldn't he feel sad about?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

If you did everything you could, and went above and beyond for something, you shouldn't feel sad because you didn't do more.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He shouldn't feel guilty, definitely not. But it is super unhealthy to force yourself not to feel sad.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Based on what.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just about every single psychology paper that deals with the forced surpression of emotion after traumatic events...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We adopted a feral cat when I was 9. She was always skittish. Her purr was so quiet you had to feel her throat but it was always going. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

She never fully became domesticated. You're a good person for taking care of him and giving him years of love.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Go get another one asap, gonna make you feel better.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

We are going to go to the pound during the kitten overload this spring and adopt an indoor kitty. :)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Why not get that tomcat fixed and take him?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He's really mean and you can't get close to him. I haven't seen him in a bit. I'm wondering if they got both of them, but we only found our

Kitty's body.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

:( when I was growing up we found a cat who was under 2 lbs. he was deaf and we named him Quinn. He loved being outside, even though we 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wanted to keep him an indoor cat. He was hit by a car. It was horrible. I miss him so much. Sorry for your loss.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Coyotes are trash and disease ridden. Attacked one of my dogs last year. Open season on them at our house 24/7 now. They are bad this year.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

Sorry for your loss @OP, know that I will get revenge in spirit for you and your kitty.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

My dad went and got a license to hunt coyotes at night after they killed 6/10 of our chickens plus my 3 favorite barn cats.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They can’t be pure coyotes either, one is black and really large >.>

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s kinda scary. We have a lone male hanging around, he calls in packs every week, sounds like teenage girls getting murdered at night.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Neighborhood coyotes? Isn't this why Americans own guns?

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 10

Yeah and they're really starting to spread now. We even have them on the coast of North Carolina now.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Coyotes are being forced into more urban environments than they're used to. The results don't often end well.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 7

There also not native to the areas they are in anymore and several us states have bounties on them

Probably not, because I haven't heard much about helicopter based coyote thinning, have heard about wild wolves in the bush away from towns.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

...you're literally describing cats right there, except for the wild part because there's domesticated ones as well.
