Bob-omb Tissue Holder

Tissue Holder

I have this modern-looking tissue dispenser that, to me, looked a lot like a BobOmb from Mario. It just needed eyes and feet...

Modeling in Blender

So I grabbed some reference photos and took it into Blender. Here's a walkthrough of the modeling process. After tracing the body outline and scaling to real-world dimensions, everything was modeled relative to the body. I mostly went by feel when modeling the shape of the eyes and feet.

Export & Print

I had a couple issues with the export / print process. The feet took up the better part of the printing surface. The rake would sometimes lift up and throw everything off, but I got it after a little trial and error.

3D printed on a Makerbot

The feet printed just fine when printed individually. Some suggested modeling in a platform to make sure the rake had good, even coverage, but this worked out just fine.

Closeup of Right Foot

Turns out I made the base ring a little too narrow, so I ended up having to take a Dremel tool to it for the body to fit snugly.

Results

And here he is!

Results (close up)

The eyes were a little thin and translucent, so I ended up coating the backs in white paint to hide the adhesive (after this photo).

I can see the glue....

I wish I had the money for 3D printers, I'd print EVERYTHING

That's an old-style highway flare, essentially a kerosene lantern, not a bomb you nitwit.

You need to make into a business on Etsy or something. You'll make money.

Bob-omb is cool and all, but where can I get one of those Lissajous curve prints in the second-to-last pic?

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Screw it, I'm gonna make one myself.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Cold porcelain would be a better and less expensive solution, I guess...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Are you planning on sharing the STL's by chance? I'd love to print one!!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can't wait for Nintendo to copyright this...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No disrespect but does it make sex toys?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm at work, so I won't be able to directly link: look up maker love. I promise I found it by accident. Mostly.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm more interested in how he made that piece of geometry curve with the bomb.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have a tattoo of Bob-omb!

Reddit OP, so you should check there!

Reddit OP still has an account here

It honestly probably cost somewhere around 400$ for all that material. 3d printing is very expensive with good material

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 13

Dunno why you got downvoted for this comment! Just seemed like you were making a reasonable comment to me!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

As someone who makes robot prototypes 3D printers, the material for that is less than a dollar. Likely less than fifty cents.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

"Good material"? $400?

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Actually that would cost fractions of a dollar. Source: I have several 3d printers

11 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Just the opposite of real printers, the 'ink' is the cheaper bit...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: a solid cubic inch of printed ABS plastic averages about 70 cents, assuming you have to pay the electric bill.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

To be fair, I have used industrial rapid prototypers and the Stratasys Mojo which could have easily cost $400 for that, but not with ABS

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would sell my left nut for a MakerBot.. too bad I'm female..

11 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 1

Try the Fab Lab program - plenty of labs worldwide that offer free teaching and access to 3D printers http://www.fabfoundation.org/fab-labs/

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if you're a girl you should definitely not give them away

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You could sell a baby for like $20,000. Just sayin'.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

if you can find someone who buys nuts, ill sell both of mine so we can both get makerbots!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Female because you already sold both nuts? (I kid!)

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Some public and academic libraries now have 3D printers for use .. might want to check, in case there's one near you!

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My school has one actually, I just need to learn more about them first.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Me too - and I work in a library with one! But there should be someone in the library that can help you out .. for a 'research project'. :)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1-at my school, we are doing a project where we learn to use 3d printers. I recommend going on thingiverse to check out other peoples

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2- designs. Then go on tinkercad and do some lessons. You will also need to download maker ware to convert the files into files

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3- ready to print. Then you upload the stl. files onto a sd card and your ready to print :)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I haven't tried it yet, but there's http://www.shapeways.com/ - you can upload your 3D models and have them printed in a material of choice.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Try it it's awesome. :)

All I heard was "Money, you can money with the money and it just money for money!"
