There are so many tricks like this for living without modern amenities. I wonder how useful some would be in other climates and with other flora/fauna considerations

They (as in ”food storage on sticks”) are quite common in the Northern hemisphere, from Scandinavia through Russia and into Alaska. And Iberia of some reason.

According to wikipedia Hórreo seems a more common name than Panera.

Maybe it's a regional thing, like Galicia (northwest) vs Asturias/Cantabria (north)
