Imgur, I need your help!

Avorion is my 4 year one-man behemoth project. It's a co-op space sandbox where players must find their way from the edge of the galaxy to its center. In those 4 years, I've coded it entirely from scratch.

I've recently been joined by a good friend of mine, and together we want to make it our jobs and finish this game. But for this we need your help.

Procedural Generation and Building

In order to stem the large amount of work I let the game content be generated procedurally, including space ships and stations. I wanted something different than the standard voxel look, so blocks in Avorion can have any size. Well, and when there's blocks then of course there's ship building too! You'll be able to build your own ships out of various materials and equip them with turrets and upgrades.

Let me get one thing out of the way immediately: Avorion isn't just yet another Minecraft in space.

How about some epic space battles?

So how is Avorion different from other space building games like Space Engineers or StarMade? Avorion shifts the focus away from micro-intensive building and more towards actually flying and experiencing things in your ship, exploring, economy and combat. Hell, if you don't want to build at all, you can just let the game generate a ship for you.

So what's the story?

Subspace rifts are tearing apart the galaxy and an alien race is rumored to have appeared in the center, along with a strange new element called Avorion. It's your job to get to the bottom of this and to stop the destruction.

There's going to be lots of factions, sectors and space travel. Sectors create an influence sphere around them, showing which faction (or player) controls that portion of the map.

The closer you get to the center of the galaxy, the stronger enemies will become, and the better the loot they drop. There's also going to be the occasional boss battle.

Economy

You can found mines and factories and haul cargo between either your stations or buy and sell from/to NPC stations. There's hundreds of different goods, each with its own recipe and factory that produces it.

Founding mines and factories will attract NPC traders that will buy or sell goods there. It will also increase your influence in this sector, increasing the size of your territory.

Mining

In asteroid fields you can mine resources to build your ship or find hidden smuggling stashes with valuable loot.

Take that! ... oh shit

All ships and stations in Avorion are fully destructible. Tired of shooting a carrier and it always explodes the same way? You're not the only one! You can cripple enemy ships by blowing off their engines. Or their weapons. Or rotational thrusters. You get the idea.

Just make sure to build some shield generators so this doesn't happen to you, too.

Aaand finally: The Demo!

In case you're still sceptical, we have released a new demo 2 weeks ago. We added a special game mode called the "Super Action Mode" in order to show what Avorion is capable of in terms of space battles. You get a fully equipped ship and must fight never-ending waves of enemies.

You can get it here: http://www.avorion.net/demo

We have a Kickstarter running right now (it's close to ending) and we could really use some help. Basically, the big thing we lack is visibility. Nobody wants to write a story about an unknown indie team who is running their first Kickstarter.

I'm more of a lurker around here and I'm usually not a fan of self-promotion on imgur, but we're in dire need visibility. I think that the sum we want to raise is reasonable in relation to the size of the project and we have the demo to prove that all this isn't just hot air. If we manage to get this out there for enough people to be seen, then I'm sure that we still have a real chance to get funded!

I have been working on this game for years and I want to make its development my job. If you're interested, here's the link to the campaign with the full story and way more details:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/koonschi/avorion

Thank you for your time and I hope that, even if you're not interested, I could at least entertain you with some pretty pictures.

Edit: Thank you all so much, I never imagined this might blow up like this.

If you're having trouble starting singleplayer, it's probably avast deleting/blocking the server. Add the Avorion installation directory to the exceptions and reinstall the game, that should fix it.

Built a ship got into a fight crashed into an asteroid 10/10 will play again

the weapons remind me of the Asgard beam weapons from SG-1. i keep hearing carter yell "bring asgard weapons online!"

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good luck OP. I look forward to wasting more of my life in your awesome looking game.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a fellow indie game developer I'm going to link this post to everyone I know and would care about it!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sounds like a great game

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How much will it be at launch?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We were planning 15€/$, but I can't say for sure since Steam will have the final word on that.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Huh. I'm impressed. You had the willpower and motivation to see your game through to completion. I'm downright envious.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I pledged! I hope your kickstarter works out!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Well not *your* kickstarter but I hope *the* kickstarter works out.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll see if I can help fund it. Good luck!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good luck. Wish I could help you out on kickstarter. I will be playing the demo and looking for bugs for you. Thank you for Linux support!

10 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Was going to ask about Linux. Niceeeeee!

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Looks phenomenal, I'm genuinely impressed by it being a one man project! What makes it different from no man's sky? Seems very similar to it

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Avorion is more centered on the big ships. You're the one flying the carriers. You can found stations and have & command multiple ships.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I just played the demo and loved it! The giant battles are so cool

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Damn man, really nice work here, I'll be getting this when it's released

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

After checking out your Kickstarter project: +1 for Amon Amarth \m/

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So, Like Eve Online, except I can build my own ship, my deal with gankers and not have to pay an exorbitant amount of cash? I'm in.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Supposed to be "not" deal with them. Oops.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a good thing that this genre of games is making a return. It's granted us many great games that do not deserve to fade into obscurity.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Guys there is only 49 hours left and he needs 7,000. We can dooo this lets make this person's dreams a reality!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good work op

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So how is the player presented ingame? Do we get an avatar besides the ship? Will there be IVA stuff like visiting the Bridge and stuff?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You're represented by your current ship. We want some kind of avatars as well, but walking around the ship is way out of scope for us :(

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

A customizable picture avatar or a custom ship logo could work.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You should name something Swoks in honour of the URL

10 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

YEEESSSS!!!! that would be so awesome and original please do it if this works

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He did it. Boss Swoks III is the best.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Awesome!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@OP if you haven't contacted Rock Paper Shotgun yet, you're doing something wrong. Some of their biz is writing about unknown indie teams

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I contacted them multiple times (5x now?) and never got a response. If you know an editor of theirs who'd be interested, please let me know.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow, this looks awesome! Reminds me of Freelancer, I loved that game back then... and still do.

10 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

You might want to check out Starpoint Gemini 2 while you're waiting for this one to be available, it's very Freelancer-esque.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That game was epic for its time. Loved it.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I replayed the main story of Freelancer last month. I still love that game.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Scrolled down to make Freelancer comment. +1 to you.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The guy that headed the creation of Freelancer, Chris Roberts, is making a new game called Star Citizen. @ www.robertsspaceindustries.com

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, we know. And we kinda lost hope too. :(

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why? The game is being developed faster than ever. The next major update will bring the first iteration of persistence plus a new starsystem

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

so how is this not EVE? is it free?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

character name?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Allendre Okaski, but I haven't played for 4 years. all my friends who played with me quit, so it lost the fun.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, if you want to join up in a new group, just pm my skype, same username as imgur. could also be anduinmax. o/

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

O7

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

See this is great. Good job, now time to pull a star citizen... Jking. I'm going to put this post up on eve/perp forums. Need testers?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

That would be awesome! And testers are always welcome.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Really like that theres already a demo and even marketing budget, very open and honest! My second backed project (first was Rimworld).

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm an intern doing automation testing, but finishing my Software Eng course, so i'd be happy to test for bugs. What's it programmed with?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

C++ for engine stuff, lua for gameplay and modding. The lua code is and will remain open, for the C++ code it's going to be harder.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'll look at your Kickstarter and possibly send a message.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@op hey. Would you allow people to live stream the game?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, go right ahead!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks! :D

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

link to livestream?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ill be streaming it when i wake up earlier today. Around 5 pm ish Mountain time. I think 4pm pacific. Check my bio for stream link.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll favourite this and try the demo tomorrow. I like the pretty gifs and the pew pew pew stuff.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Dotting this comment. Someone reply so I can download the demo tomorrow.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wake up buddy

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm back to download it!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok...I can't be the only one who thinks this is basically No Man's Sky?

10 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 12

ever since NMS was revealed, there have been almost a dozen attempts to create games on the heels of NMS's hype, so i'm not surprised.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

You're not. But I look at other space games and find myself calling them NMS ripoffs. Think harder and you'll notice distinct differences.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I get more of a space engineers vibe from it.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's tempting to see the similarities but the differences are quite vast. NMS focuses on pro' gen'd planets. This is focused more on space.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Avorion will be more large-scaled, ship-wise. You can found stations, command multiple ships and generally fly the carriers. And build them.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At this point, it just looks like Rebel Galaxy with another degree of freedom.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This game is about building yourself up in the galaxy, with its territories and stuff. No Mans Sky is more about exploration and adventure.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

the goal of NMS is to also start at the edge of the galaxy and reach the center, plus the procedural generation and it sounds all to familar

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Calling these the same is like calling Rust and Space Engineers the same game.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Or Overwatch and Battleborn.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Outside of space, how is it like No Man's Sky?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

Holy shit, front page! This is incredible! Well, I might not be *him*, but ... have this! http://imgur.com/fQkBwP0

10 years ago | Likes 500 Dislikes 13

Well, I was GONNA buy the game

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

You had a good master ;)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Made an account to donate. Good luck with the game man, i hope it turns out the way you want.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

And i am now sending the kickstarter page to a bunch of my gamer friends. I really hope this turns out.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I just backed the kickstarter because of your gif here! lol I hope there is a way to unlock that in-game ;)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

you son of a bitch...fine I'll help

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is this where we start chanting "one of us!"? Also, I'm very excited for you to succeed, great concept and demo so far!

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Listen here, Fucko

10 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 4

IT'S... EVOLVING

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tried to run the demo, couldn't start a game, couldn't find any games to join.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I updated the demo page for some troubleshooting issues, maybe this may contain your solution: http://avorion.net/demo/

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Considering multiplayer, we don't have any official servers yet, sadly.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WHERES STAR CITIZEN!!?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I don't know, where IS Star Citizen?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I guess, you don't need to worry about No Man's Sky anymore. :)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And everspace!

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

That's the game that will inspire me to finally build a proper gaming rig.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't forget Stellaris, almost regretting that purchase due to how unproductive I've become

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Empyrion too.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and Endless Sky, the spiritual successor of EV Nova

One of those games a time-sink. How are you planning on playing 4?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't forget Void Expanse

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Stellaris as well.

Surprisingly aroused.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I really like how intricate docking at stations is in elite but the combat gets clunky in my humble opinion. However im stoked 4 nomans sky!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

NMS HYPE

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's def being super hyped, but I really do hope its as good as we think it's going to be.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea I know, but I just don't see much publicity, so lots of hype from so few people :(

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

CLUNKY??? You're doing it wrong. So so so wrong.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Other people who are hyped for No Man's Sky? I am not alone in the universe!

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

You will be when the game drops

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

So hyped.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'm back to say that the game kind of sucked. Oh well!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm back to say it's okay again

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's been hyped and hyped, I'm just going to wait for trusthworthy reviews. :(

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Like that's gonna happen :(

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It will, gameplay videos are evident and there are many with good integrity.. So we'll see, we'll see indeed.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Spoiler; You've reached the center of the galaxy. But, turns out it's a massive black hole and you were crushed into atoms.

10 years ago | Likes 551 Dislikes 0

Murph?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Supermassive black holes are actually pretty harmless right to the event horizon. You could technically pass safely 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 but we have no idea what would happen to you when you crossed to the other side. Apart from the fact that escape would be impossible.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You technically don't notice crossing the true horizon. You will still become spaghetti sometime before the (unavoidable) singularity.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Unless you are in the envelope of protection on the other side of the Omega 4 relay. Just watch out for the Collectors.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ur black hole is in another galaxy

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Isn't that what the actual center of the galaxy is irl?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This sounds like one of the terrifying endings from that trippy "Aliens kidnapped you, so find your way home" Choose Your Own Adventure

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Correction. Shredded by spaghettification, not crushed.

10 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 2

Nah, only the small black holes do that. Something the size of a galactic core would disintegrate you.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Avorion is PEOPLE!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To atoms, you say? How's his wife holding up?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

To shreds you say?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

ZATHURA IS A BLACK HOLE!!!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At least it set my soul alight

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OR you end up behind a bookshelf. Either or.

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Wish I could post as a gif, but: I got that reference.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm so tempted to do that.

10 years ago | Likes 260 Dislikes 0

Or you could take the Spore route, have a chat with god and meet him for tea or something on Sol

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was so utterly genius.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you are building in Mirror mode and place something in the middle of the mirror line the game seems to build it twice there resulting in

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

an error asking you to remove overlapping blocks. If you remove the block the error messages takes too long to fade out, making it unclear

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if you resolved the issue by deleting the block or if something else is buggy.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also your creator said that my ship was "too small" which I don't really see a problem with. But this doesn't seem to be tied to a minimum

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do it. For the plot twist

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

maybe RNG multiple endings

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can see you have 48 hours left for getting the money you need. What if you don't reach your goal?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've come too far to let a failed Kickstarter stop me. But since I won't have any financial security, I can't make promises on the schedule.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It sounds and looks fun, I'm in!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah, you can be more inventive. It has to be a wormhole, that puts you to the edge of a NEW galaxy! New Game+, realized!

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

That feel when you predicted no man's sky

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

HOLY FUCK, I INADVERTENTLY DID! If the person is still making this game, DON'T DO WHAT THEY DID!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I tried doing that in Elite: Dangerous, but all it was was disappointment

10 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 0

What's really at the center of the galaxy in E:D?

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Sagittarius A. A large black hole. You can't be crushed by it though, yet

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Darn, I really want to be crushed into bits by a huge gaping hole

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same thing that's at the center of the galaxy in real life.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

The Earth, but you know flat?

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Elite's black holes really are lackluster. The computer just says "LOL NOPE" and stops you getting closer. sucks

10 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

Try the Whamboi system, there's a black hole you can fly into but everything goes crazy at the center and you get all turned around.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can imagine the captain having an argument with the computer "Well how are we going to know if this is a faster trading route w/o trying?"

10 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

So you can't even speed up towards it and turn off all systems (apart from life support) and just drift in? Meh. :(

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You die from the intense density, and your shit just explodes.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0
