Some people unconsciously use the word "men" instead of "male" because they see men as people/human while they use "female" instead of "women" because females to them are just animals/objects, not people. I used to think the same way but if there's plenty of alternatives, it costs me nothing to change, and it hurts people when i do it then why would I insist on continuing to do it? After I realized that all the arguments in support of gender neutral "dude" just sounded the same as any other argument any person uses to continue to use a word they shouldnt say.

I (a woman who served in the US military) still, to this day, catch myself slipping back into mistakingly referring to men as "males" and women as "females" and this is exactly why. In the military, we were objectified and uniform.
