Mon Dieu.

I remember back in 2015 a memo went out about disabling geo location on phones while deployed because of shit like this.

lol okay but that’s a pretty dope thing to have on your global heat map

People ask why there's a need for physical media ([offline] video games, books, movies, etc). It's so we don't give away our position to the enemy. I still haven't bought a Microsoft console since the XBOX One presentation.

5 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is why military members are told to turn off any and all location services and use vpns when they deploy.

6 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh My! *Such* security!! So any idiot (normal user) who doesn't know what a location service is will leak locations any time. And what makes you think using a VPN would help? The app is recording a GPS location and sending it to the server where it is made public. But at least the data was secure in transit!

Don't blame the sailor for bad IT security

So, are the loops him turning around and walking the other way on deck, or is the ship occasionally circling (executing a "crazy Ivan")?

Did someone check Marine Traffic to see if they were also publicly broadcasting the ship's position via satellite for collision avoidance at that time?

I forgot the French had an aircraft carrier

6 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Strava: we create embarrassment and potential security breach on military forces since 2016!

5 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aircraft carriers are pretty easy to find, just look for the floating city with planes taking off. I’m pretty sure the giant antennas blasting radio waves are a tell.

6 days ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Alright. Tell us where one is when you see it, k?

6 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Plus sattelites exist.

6 days ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Also they don't work alone, they are part of a carrier group.

6 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It was going very slow: he was running (significantly) faster to the back of the ship than the forward motion. Granted, a serving soldier will probably be a lot faster than me, but even when magnified a lot, this only shows forward motion (me running on a cruise ship): https://imgur.com/5qehOXV

i helped a friend with a new iphone after i told her about corporations stealing/selling your data, did a youtube search. found some non-political channels showing what to turn off. they all r astonished politicians/regulators r allowing this level of spying/stealing. 99% of people i meet have no idea to turn this off. default is spying everything. Dems r fools for not making this a campaign issue! iPhone iOS 26 SCARY Privacy Settings To Turn Off Now! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQE-OBW9hkk

i've posted for years BREXIT was a US/Corp/CIA operation to break the EU. EU is the last entity on earth to have minimal protections for citizens. US Corps absolutely hate the EU. does the EU allow ISP to spy on customers like US does and sell that data? what if ISP is selling military employees data compromising operations? But with satellites and various forms of intelligence, don't governments and militaries pretty much always know where other countries' ships are anyway?

6 days ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

People have no idea how immense the ocean is. The horizon is 3.24mi (5.2 Km for normal people). There strait of Hormuz is ~36mi.... And that is a narrow Path. If it is more than 12,5mi it disappears behind the horizon.... No image the ocean 3000mi of water.....

Like using Pokemon Go in a base in Afghanistan.

6 days ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

My favorite was using quizlet for security questions and codes on a nuke base.

5 days ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Guessing though that nuke base locations are pretty much well-known by the people that really care about such things.

5 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh no, its not the locations, it was the security routes and actual codes needed at doors and gates on base.

5 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Doh. Yeah I didn't quite get it but I see now. That'd be... bad.

4 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, Strava in particular lit up American bases in the Mideast, didn't it?

6 days ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I seem to remember something about a sudden uptick in users in a corner of a desert where there weren't supposed to be anyone, yet there were plenty of users jogging the same route at times that aligned with 8 hr rotation.

6 days ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yep. The route was around the base perimeter, so it not only located them, it gave size and external dimensions.

Dumbest example that comes to mind was Russian soldiers using tinder in Ukraine

6 days ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 0

Russia tops this. When Starlink stopped working for Russians, they tried to get Ukrainians to register the dishes in Ukraine. The Ukrainian army then setup fake accounts, collecting the dish info AND got payed for it. They took down down like 70 dishes and made a couple of thousand dollars.

IIRC, they were getting catfished by Ukranian soldiers which is *chef's kiss* levels of duplicity.

Russia is providing Iran with satellite-based reconnaissance capabilities. Even if the individual no longer has Wi-Fi access, Putin continues to assist with tracking.

6 days ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Yeah, working in these sectors i can promise you that they already knew. Unless the ship had total radiosilence and a major touch of luck.

The largest aircraft carrier has an area of about 280,000 square feet on the flight deck

Compare that to the ocean, which has an area of about 735,941,601,120 square feet.

Someone who’s got more time to run the numbers can figure out how large a proportionate object would be in a standard bath tub, which is maybe 10 square feet on the surface.

6 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I haven't checked your numbers, so using those as provided the aircraft carrier occupies a space equivalent to 0.00000038 of the ocean, so the equivalent in a bath tub 10 square feet / 0.93 square metres in surface area would be about 0.000548 square inches / 0.353 square millimetres, which is about a third the size of a head of a pin (much bigger than a red blood cell).

6 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

About a two thousandth of a square inch.

6 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So about the size of a human blood cell in a bath tub

6 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mostly irrelevant. There are 1,000s of ships in the Med, and they have radar. Expand your ship's surface area to "the horizon". :)

6 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Place a red blood cell onto a tablespoon of water, and assume it won’t sink. Then have a thousand people look at the spoon. Do you think any of them will find it without specialized equipment?

6 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Again, ahem, RADAR.

2 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Sure.

May as well never conceal positions of troops and materiel because rAdAr

2 days ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aircraft carriers are big, sure, but the sea is much, much bigger.

6 days ago | Likes 112 Dislikes 1

And that's just peanuts to space.

6 days ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not as big as your mom. Sry couldn’t help it

6 days ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Maybe they could lose sight of it on open seas but in the Mediterranean? Nah.
Anyone who the ship is relevant to will have it tagged when it passes through the Straights of Gibraltar if not before.
