The collapse of global trade, or even just the world leaving the U.S. out, will only increase that population. No, a judge was asked to clarify what the existing Equality Act from 2010 says. It wasn't written with trans women in mind, so the definition as currently written doesn't include them. The judge isn't saying they agree with it or that that's what it should be, just that that's what the current Act says. The current Act could be updated, though, and hopefully this clarification is the impetus to do that.

Yes and no. The protections they already had, remains. This ruling was largely to clear up uncertainties that the law didn't yet cover. It is certainly short sighted and I don't think they have thought it all the way through. It seemed largely predicated on the belief that 'trans' are just men in women's clothing. I feel this issue will be revisited when burly, bearded trans men start using the legally mandated women's bathrooms and I can't imagine the Scottish government will be too...
