I got Covid so I’m reviewing the things I’m entertaining myself with until I can go back to work, without looking up additional information.

Kiki is a young witch in training who sets out on her own on the most perfect night. She finds a nice busy town and hopes to make her way there. After doing a small favor for a very pregnant baker, she realizes her skillful flying can lead to a lucrative delivery business! The baker takes her in to help her get on her feet. And we are off on a wonderful tale of finding yourself and your place in the world.

This one is all about the story. We come to learn that Kiki is only 13 years old when bravery and ambition are plentiful like air and water. Who among us didn’t think conquering the world was a task to be completed by lunch at that age? And it is only through trying, succeeding, and yes failing that we learn it is not so simple. Kiki does well and makes choices and eventually learns the joys and consequences of those choices. And here ring the words of her artist friend in the woods, “maybe you should take a break. don’t even try. take long walks. doze off at noon. don’t even think about it. And then pretty soon you’ll be flying again.” (paraphrasing again, not going to look it up) Certainly I find this especially poignant due to my current circumstance but let us all have an artist friend who lives in the woods.

Of course Kiki can still fly and gets to save the day because she was able to believe in herself. Let us all believe in ourselves and remember to take a break when that gets too hard to do.

I’ve got to say how beautiful the artwork is on this or I think I legally have to explode. I don’t have anything else to say about the production I guess. Writing and pacing are textbook on point.

TLDR: a beautiful story that is good for your soul. 38 out of 40 stars

Studio ghibli films in general tend to have mature themes despite their fantastic whimsical art style, it's what makes them so good.
