I think Trump(or at least somebody on his team) finds a way for Trump to be able to back down while having an excuse that isn't just "I was stupid and wrong". When those companies don't get the Canadian steel and aluminum they build parts with, they and the Big 3 will shut down. And that's just the auto industry. Not possible to cut it entirely. The power grid forms a complete ring around Lake Erie, with power flowing in both directions as loads and supplies shift. Last time that ring was broken was during the 2003 Northeast blackout, when cascading failures collapsed its functionality. But this will definitely cause more American power stations to be utilized as they will be cheaper than buying power from Canada.

The market as a whole is pretty damn resilient and most institutional investors prefer to see losses limited so it can get back to growth as soon as possible. The fact that Trump is causing so much damage out of the ether is fucking insanity like you wont ever see. Some things have become more expensive, yes, but losing the US as a trading partner is opening up new opportunities for Canada to gain new trading partners. We're already talking to China, and some countries in the EU. Canada is stepping into a void the US has made, and if we're smart, we could come out of this smelling like roses.
