The tie should be dragging on the floor.

The Canadian car companies are GM, Ford and Chrysler. Shutting them down would be catastrophic for American manufacturing.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

If anyone wonders what a petulant 3rd grader would do as president, wonder no more.
I'm worried about that veiled threat of America will do what it must...

1 year ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 0

yeah, but I called the 'national emergency shit' n another post awhile back. gives him an excuse to attack canada not just economically. asshat is gonna start an actual war with us canucks.

Which means war with the rest of NATO...

Elbows up!

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

We'll fight like hell, but Even with the help of the world, this isn't Russia vs Ukraine. An occupation would hurt America dearly, and eventually it would play out. But Canada can't stop the insanity, only Americans can.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We know, does America knows what to do tho? Canada is gonna protect itself, but Americans are the ones who can actually do something to stop this.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Sadly no, most muricans here are fucking retarded.

God, I fucking hate this orange bloating bastard. Why did that guy have to miss?

1 year ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

"That guy" was a patsy. He was supposed to get on the roof and be stopped before he fired at the president. It was supposed to be a fake attack w/no one actually getting shot except the patsy. Only someone dropped the ball and he got a few shots off before they stopped him.

This narrative makes no sense. I can't imagine Trump trusting anyone with a loaded weapon where the person might possibly pop off a few rounds in his direction.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, I don't have any proof, and I agree Trump would never trust anyone pointing a gun at him. So, I maybe wrong, but the photo op of him pumping his arm afterward one of the things that pushed him way up in the ratings.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Because of the trade war I started, I'm having to declare a national emergency! See...ain't I the best!"~ Trump

1 year ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 0

And by declaring it an emergency, he doesn't have to follow regular laws. It's really a twofer.

Yep and the US has very little bauxite ore and only 5 aluminum production facilities. We'll be seeing layoffs before long at US auto plants

I can’t believe he didn’t say “Biden did this.”

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

He has already, and he's gonna say it again, that all of this was 'necessary' because of the TERRIBLE position that Biden put us in. There is nothing, NOTHING they cant find way to spin on blaming Democrats. When you're not bound by reality or consistency of position, literally everything becomes possible. Which wouldn't be a huge issue if he didn't have a cult of dozens of millions of people who will blindly eat it up, if not at first, then at least with a bit of wearing down.

Why is "electricity" in quotes? Like it's a thing they don't believe in or something.

1 year ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

It’s likely because we call it hydro.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was thinking the same thing. Glad I wasn't the only one. The way I read that was "this supposed electricity" coming from Canada.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Trump is 80 years old. That generation puts quotes around words to emphasize them. My old boss at my last job did it too. He got mad at me when he asked me to look at the new flyers and what I thought of them and then told him to remove the random quotes in every sentence.

1 year ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

This is not at all limited to the elderly. I see younger people do this too. Then again, younger people have all but abandoned all punctuation, so when they *have to* use it, they just kind of make it up on the fly.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I fucking hate that shit. "Let me get your thoughts on this" and then is pissed about the answer. He didn't actually want your opinion, he wanted you to say he was great.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

You believe in electricity? Pfft wake up, sheep, do your own research

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They build chairs from that in prison

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'm guessing (without research obviously) that the Canadian power comes from renewables, so could be riddled with wind cancer.

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

A lot of Hydro and nuclear in the eastern parts where this is coming from. Ontario and Quebec would be as well. https://www.cer-rec.gc.ca/en/data-analysis/energy-markets/provincial-territorial-energy-profiles/provincial-territorial-energy-profiles-ontario.html I know you're joking around, but hey, helps to know the info when it's becoming such a talking point.

A trade agreement where it states the Canadian tariffs on dairy don't take effect until a certain amount of US dairy is sold. In no category has the US sold enough dairy to Canada to trigger the tariffs.

1 year ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Well facts were never republicans friends.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

At the time we all said the "quota" was meaningless because most milk produced in the US couldn't be sold in Canada in any case. American farmers use hormones and antibiotics that are banned in Canada.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Interesting. That must be what the IDFA was whining about when they stated: "Frustratingly, the U.S. has never gotten close to exceeding our USMCA quotas because Canada has erected various protectionist measures that fly in the face of their trade obligations made under USMCA" https://www.idfa.org/news/idfa-statement-on-potential-u-s-tariff-on-canadian-dairy-products

Step 4) Repeat.

This, they manipulate the market to get rich at the expense of the u.s.a and its regular citizen. And while people say "eat the reach" the rich are currently feasting on the poor.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

With Trump in office, the Dow peaked at about 44,800 around January 30th. Since then, his tariff rhetoric and outright destruction of the Federal Government has caused the market to crash by 3700 points or about 7.6%.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, I'm aware that you guys are all painfully, irreparably media illiterate. I keep trying to press on it, though it's impressive that you're actually bragging about it! lol You're basically no different whatsoever to Trump supporters anymore. You've all gone full "Mainstream media is the enemy of the people" at this point, not that you were ever actually reading news to begin with. You were just manipulated into this position by social media propaganda.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Mainstream media IS in fact the enemy of the people.

The corporations and incredibly rich people who own and run the mainstream media do not have any allegiance is to the people of America. In mamy cases they are outright hostile.

There are few exceptions, Poynter, Propublica, etc. that are a quickly fading last line that will not stand.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hes building a narrative so when he invades Canada he has an excuse...

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

If he tries to invade Canada there will be a mutiny in the US armed forces, followed swiftly by a coup and assassination.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The phrase you're after is 'Casus Belli'.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ontario could have blocked all electricity sold to the US. Trump should be happy that they didn't.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think the only reason they haven't (yet) is out of empathy with the citizens in those states who might freeze. When the weather warms to a safer level, maybe they'll re-evaluate.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How long before we start sending spec ops teams over the border to secure the power station as those this were an irl Canadian Bacon?

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hard to predict exactly the level this escalates to, but I dont think it gets to anything like that. I think Trump(or at least somebody on his team) finds a way for Trump to be able to back down while having an excuse that isn't just "I was stupid and wrong". I mean, yes it would make him look weak to any reasonable person, but his supporters are not reasonable people. They will swallow the excuse given to them. It's the great thing about cults.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I’m just worried he’s going to make the threat in the spur of the moment and then feel as though he has to follow through so as to not look weak.
The more he purges and puts sycophants in high positions the harder his impulses will be to control.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not impossible, that's for sure. They've certainly been trying to normalize talk of annexing Canada and whatnot, even if they seem like empty threats for now. But yea, Trump being a narcissist obsessed with his image does make for a volatile and unpredictable situation if he doesn't have people who can reign him in.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As a Canadian auto worker this is going to hurt.

However, it must be done.

Cut the power entirely and watch Donny cry.

1 year ago | Likes 185 Dislikes 2

Cut the power entirely and watch Donnie try to invade Canada to restore the resources that he thinks America has the right to beyond any other's claim or rights to it.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I will suffer to watch Velveeta Vlad cry.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The American auto industry is just as exposed - most manufacturers work using a "just in time" inventory model so it's only going to take a few days (at most) before US plants have to shut down.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Actually hurt American workers more due to the "domino effect" of consequences. Hundreds of independent companies make parts/subassemblies for the Big 3. When those companies don't get the Canadian steel and aluminum they build parts with, they and the Big 3 will shut down. And that's just the auto industry. There are way more other industries that will be in the same situation because of similar arrangements with 3rd party suppliers.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Plenty of money in this country. We could tax the billionaires and corporations and do just fine. Not that Carney will, but I guess he at least probably won't give the country to Trump like Poilievre would.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Donny will not cry. Americans will suffer, but Donny won't cry. And Donny won't resign or take any responsibility. I'm not saying this shouldn't be done, I'm just saying no one should expect it to affect Donny or any of his minions.

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Honestly, I've been wondering what the endgame was for his (US) backers. Elon is just as deranged as Donny, so not him, but take Bezos and Zuck, for example. They're also kissing Donny's ass. And yet the whole stock market is going down. Are they okay with that? Are they having second thoughts? Wish I knew.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When they can buy everything for pennies, yeah, they'll be just fine with a temporary downturn.

Limit the power first, create rolling brownouts.

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

As an Ontario voter... You trust Ford to not fuck this up?

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As an American who gets part of my electricity from Ontario, this is also going to hurt. But it DOES need to be done.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Not possible to cut it entirely. The power grid forms a complete ring around Lake Erie, with power flowing in both directions as loads and supplies shift. Last time that ring was broken was during the 2003 Northeast blackout, when cascading failures collapsed its functionality. But this will definitely cause more American power stations to be utilized as they will be cheaper than buying power from Canada.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aren’t most of the cars assembled in Canada from American car companies?

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The thing is most of the recipient of Canadian Hydro-Electricity are "Blue States" (Not sure about Ontario Electricity exactly though). We are not punishing the right states. Also If you cripple the US through withholding power you provide the Nazi with the excuse they are looking for to call for Martial Law since it can be taken as a threat to their National Security. IMO

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They did, but they were lied to. Still are being lied to. It's mostly an educational issue actually. Which is just a polite way of saying they are dumb fucks for voting trump.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Canada is more likely to wait for a while (in clement weather) before having outages, rather than shutting things down altogether — inconveniencing voters, rather than forcing a statewide health emergency.

1 year ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

they really should just cut it off cold turkey.

1 year ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

No, Canadians would't do that. I don't think... thats more a Texas, USA move. Canadians are more likely to turn the power back on if people are hit with inclement weather, to do the humanitarian thing.

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

And that’s a stupid move when that aids a hostile nation.
It doesn’t matter if it is the humanitarian thing to do. The USA is just as hostile as Russia and Canada needs to behave accordingly.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Take a second read: "in clement weather" is not the same as "inclement weather"

That's why it'd be inconveniencing, not endangering.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

A state of emergency for a surcharge? What? You going to put up wind farms with the Guard? Bring in gas generators? This is all so fucking stupid.

1 year ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

No, it is a threat that he will invade Canada to make sure the power keeps running. This is what he wants, and the way things are going, it looks like he will get what he wants. If any of the invading force gets injured or killed, he will then wipe us out like Gaza.

1 year ago | Likes 212 Dislikes 1

The market as a whole is pretty damn resilient and most institutional investors prefer to see losses limited so it can get back to growth as soon as possible. The fact that Trump is causing so much damage out of the ether is fucking insanity like you wont ever see. The US has the most robust economy in the world, and Trump is single handedly taking a hammer to it for literally no gain of any kind, completely unprompted by any necessity or crisis or anything.

While being in the south cheering on bloodshed when they should be the ones dying for their stupidity.

Cousin of mine said similar. "It's gonna bring jobs back." But when I asked which jobs had gone to Canada, he couldn't think of any.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

What would bring jobs back would be getting rid of all the tax loopholes and huge incentives wealthy corps get from taking their businesses to foreign countries. Not tariffs of the goods, but penalties on the companies that take the jobs away.

It's fucked up, my grocery bill actually dropped by about 18 dollars. I was really surprised. But I live rural and shop at local farmers and butchers. Except avocados. Those did go up by about 40 cents.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just wait until the disappearance of price subsidies for farmers and the added tariffs on potash catch up to where you are. Maybe farmhand labour cost increases too. Sure, the price subsidies disappearing will create a nice reduction in prices on the front end, but you are in for a real treat (/s) on the back end when farmers en masse stop being able to stay in business. Dead herds, chickens, and fallow fields don't replenish quickly either.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Oh I know. I just thought it was so weird. Hell, I had to buy eggs from the store and the free range ones were like.. 3 bucks for a dozen? Which wasn't that bad. Added 50 cents to my standard total

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't call this a free fall. It's more of just absolute chaos in every market. My gut tells me it's intentional and the tariff threats and retractions are market manipulation and insider trading that won't get punished because it's an official act of the POTUS.

Trump, absolutely not. But some of his minions are at least good at making money and manipulating markets.

Agreed that we (as a nation) asked for this. I feel bad for Canadians though (and Europeans, and Gazans, and everyone else) - they didn't get to vote on whether the US becomes a clown/keptocracy.

I mean, in all honesty, Canada is poised to come out sitting pretty because of this. Some things have become more expensive, yes, but losing the US as a trading partner is opening up new opportunities for Canada to gain new trading partners. We're already talking to China, and some countries in the EU. Canada is stepping into a void the US has made, and if we're smart, we could come out of this smelling like roses.

I hope it works out for you guys, really. I'm having a hard time feeling that optimistic lately, that's on me.

That guy is an idiot. Our relations with China are at the lowest they've ever been and trading with the EU will never be as profitable as trading, by trucks, with the US. Most of our industries are deeply dependant on US partnerships. I'm not saying we are dead without the US, but saying "we could come out of this smelling like roses" is fucking delusional. The US *can* hurt us. And by the look of it, they will.
