Apocalypse Now (1979)

During the Vietnam War, Captain Willard is sent on a dangerous mission into Cambodia to assassinate a renegade colonel who has set himself up as a god among a local tribe.
probably the best Vietnam war movie.

Casualties of War (1989)

During the Vietnam War, a soldier finds himself the outsider of his own squad when they unnecessarily kidnap a female villager.

Full Metal Jacket (1987)

A pragmatic U.S. Marine observes the dehumanizing effects the Viet Nam War has on his fellow recruits from their brutal boot camp training to the bloody street fighting in Hue.
(one of the best.)

The Deer Hunter (1978)

An in-depth examination of the ways in which the U.S. Vietnam war impacts and disrupts the lives of people in a small industrial town in Pennsylvania.

Forrest Gump (1994)

Forrest Gump, while not intelligent, has accidentally been present at many historic moments, but his true love, Jenny Curran, eludes him.
i know it has a little war scenes but they were too great to not include it to the list.

Hamburger Hill (1987)

A very realistic interpretation of one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War.

Rescue Dawn (2006)

A U.S. fighter pilot's epic struggle of survival after being shot down on a mission over Laos during the Viet Nam War.

Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)

An unorthodox and irreverent DJ begins to shake up things when he is assigned to the US Armed Services Radio station in Vietnam.

Platoon (1986)

A young recruit in Vietnam faces a moral crisis when confronted with the horrors of war and the duality of man.
(also one of the best).

Tigerland (2000)

A group of recruits go through Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Polk, Louisiana's infamous Tigerland, last stop before Vietnam for tens of thousands of young men in 1971.

We Were Soldiers (2002)

The story of the first major battle of the American phase of the Vietnam War and the soldiers on both sides that fought it.

Born on the Fourth of July (1989)

The biography of Ron Kovic. Paralyzed in the Vietnam war, he becomes an anti-war and pro-human rights political activist after feeling betrayed by the country he fought for.

We Were Soldiers is a great film and almost makes you forget Mel Gibson is crazy.

No Boys in Company C.

Great list. It would have been even better if you had added Moon (2009)

I did not watch my buddies die face down in the muck so that this fucking post should go un-upvoted!

That small industrial town in Deer Hunter is Pittsburgh..

I was never a fan of Platoon. A little too heavy handed for me. And I have a pretty intense dislike of Oliver Stone.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

So, err, all the Vietnam films then...? This is Google's list...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Deer Hunter is amazing, beautiful, sad, funny, heartbreaking and every other emotion you can feel rolled into one fantastic movie.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Robert de Niro is fantastic (not only) in that movie.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Boys in Company C (1978) needs to be on this list. Sort of scattered, one of the earlier movies dealing with the war. Worth watching.

No Rambo First Blood? Smh

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So pretty much all of them?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fog of war

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Vietnam has it's moments, but you want the brutal facts of war look up some Korean or World War 1 stories.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What about tropic thunder?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

What a gem that was missed.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I disagree with you but I will not down vote you.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

What about Siege of Firebase Gloria?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Apocalypse Now & The Deer Hunter are S class movies.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

What does that mean?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

better than A class

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I recommend "84 Charlie Mo Pic."

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Me too!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes this!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

+1 for apocalypse now, because anything based on Heart Of Darkness is awesome in my book

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

The horror...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but it's Joseph Conrad's book!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Mistah Kurtz he dead

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My grandpas cousin was a navy pilot shot down over north 'nam, his alone in the jungle for 2 months before being captured. POW for 4.5 years

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

we'd love to hear that story!!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How can you kill innocent women and children like that? easy you don't lead them as much!

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

If they run, they're VC. If they stand still, they're well trained VC!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That was based off a real life encounter.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TIL'D

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Forrest Gump and Good Morning Vietnam? Really? Also We Were Soldiers lays it on a little thick.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We Were Soldiers gives generous time to the VC strategists encountering the Americans for the first time. Not many movies have done that.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The only thing I remember from 'we were soldiers' was the "here's a photo of my gal, she sure is pretty isn't she?" / guy dies cliche

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That guy was based of a real person though, he died two days after.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No "Operation Dumbo Drop"? I'm disappointed.

10 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 7

In all seriousness that was actually a surprisingly good movie. Shouldn't have been made by Disney but otherwise solid flick

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Try 'The Odd Angry Shot' 1979 about Australian SAS in Vietnam

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Not that my recommendations carry any weight, but I highly recommend this movie.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks, working on a graduate paper on Vietnam movies.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No Tropic Thunder? It is only a movie within a movie about a movie about a book that is about this war.

10 years ago | Likes 246 Dislikes 9

Even they weren't sure where they were filming.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I need to watch this movie again

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This, totally this!

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

OP went full retard.

10 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 3

Op should have known that you never go full retard.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Unpopular opinion: Apocalypse Now is way overrated, as is Marlon Brando in it

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 7

Have you read Heart of Darkness? It's much easier to appreciate after reading the book

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree even on a Black Ops mission there would definitely be more order and planned out way better than that depicted in the film

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's not the point. At all. If that's what bothered you about the movie, try watching it again and just not thinking about real logic.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just thought it was pointless, call in an airstrike, end story or ignore the guy it wasn't taking away from the war effort or anything.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Again, not the point. Nothing the military does in the film is supposed to make sense. That's the idea. It's about the what, not the why.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No Big Lebowski? I mean, there isn't a literal connection...but?

10 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 6

This isn't 'Nam, Smokey, there are rules.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You're out of your element, switters810!

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I did not watch my buddies die face down in the muck so that this fucking post should go un-upvoted!

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

No no. As Walter specifically pointed out, that was NOT 'nam.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I dabbled in pacifism. Not in 'nam, of course.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I would say Forrest Gump does not belong here....otherwise great list! +1

10 years ago | Likes 354 Dislikes 19

What about Jacobs latter?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not a bad movie per se, but it is not a "Vietnam movie". Agreed.

10 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 9

Instead, I'd put "Tropic Thunder"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Deer Hunter as well...the movie has very little to do with the war. Wake me up after the 45 minutes of wedding... (in deer hunter)

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 6

Agreed, although it captures the era well. I thought We Were Soldiers was terrible and doesn't deserve to be on the list, personally.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I feel like the list also missed Moon (2009)

10 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

Starring Sam Rockwell and Sam Rockwell?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I read something that said Vietnam vets claimed Forest Gump depicted the war more accurately than other movies.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That's a fair point, but it's not really a Vietnam war film was all I meant.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Definitely not a Vietnam movie so I get what you meant.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

People will claim anything.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I would consider Apocalypse Now to be one of the greatest War movies in general, not just limited to 'nam. (Though Patton is my personal #1)

10 years ago | Likes 89 Dislikes 4

No you sons of bitches know how i feel.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agree. Uncle was killed there, so we never talked about it or watched any of the movies & I didn't see it until recently. A truly great film

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I seriously have Apocalypse Now in my top 10 movies of all time!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I read the book Heart of Darkness which it is based off of. A.N tries too hard to be deep IMO. The book was a hard read but much better.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My uncle was an extra in that film! One of his best stories

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What's neat is that the story it's adapted from (Heart of Darkness by Josef Conrad) had very little to do with war.

10 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Well, maybe not war, but brutality and people being stupid and fucked-up toward each other

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I have a one scene spoof in my head for this one. Interior, gloomy. Rain seen out window. Man sits sharpening garden trowel. (1/?)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Man looks at the rain with thousand yard stare. "I sit here, growing weaker, while (creeping) Charlie's out there, growing stronger." (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hate apocalypse now, sorry bro, but i respect your choices

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

There are dozens of us! Seriously overrated movie.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I disagree with you but I will not down vote you.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I read Heart of Darkness before watching it. With all the narrative gone it seemed like it was trying to imply something I didn't see.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i watched it first when i was twelve with my brother. what a trip man

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

FYI: Platoon, Born on the 4th, & Heaven and Earth comprise a thematic trilogy of contrasting perspective, greater than the sum of its parts.

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Interesting, +1

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

platoon kinda sucked imho

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

at depicting the overall human feel and inner turmoil from the perspective of a soldier. It nails the struggle of ideologies. (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a veteran myself, to include the opinion of almost every veteran I've spoken with that has seen it, it is one of the most accurate (1/?)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

as someone whos never been to war, i can certainly imagine its an accurate portrayal, but that doesnt make it a good film.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Oscar worthy performances, very realistic, characters you can empathize with.. I mean, I guess there's no accounting for taste.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

thats true, the acting was fantastic. but the plot was weak. you cant explore the human condition fully with an honest story i dont 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 think. you need poetry and artistic license, vision. apocalypse now did that... perhaps overly so. theyre polar opposites in some ways.
