FP edit: for those that didn't see it in the comments here's the follow up panel: https://i.imgur.com/yusOBPH.jpg

No these aren't original Watterson panels, but I don't think the creator meant to put down anyone with ADD / ADHD that's been helped by medication, more that it's often misdiagnosed in some kids that could just use better attention and help at home and school. But I don't have kids so what do I know?

I hate it! Take it away! Stop ever printing this! Calvin and Hobbes 4 ever!! X

This is bullsh*t, you can be responsible and still have a sense of play and fun

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

This. Isn't even close to how it felt on ADHD meds. If anything ive lost more of my ability to create since being taken off it years ago.

This pisses me off. Treating legit ADHD (with & without drugs) drastically improves happiness, confidence and life in some kids who suffer.

as someone with ADHD who's life has been substantially improved with meds, this is some USDA certified Grade A ignorant bullshit.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

All that adderall just taught me how to handle my fuckin drink as an adult

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

In 2012, in my children's suburban public elementary school, 80% of the children were being given medication for behavioral modification.

Toy Story, redux

They make schoolwork so much easier. But I will never take them again.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My ADHD meds help me be MORE creative because I'm not completely crushed by executive dysfunction and my thoughts being too overwhelming...

6 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

I love C&H but this is manipulative and not how ADD medication works. ADD and ADHD is destructive and needs to be treated.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

This is a fake C&H and Bill Watterson's signature is photo-shopped in.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is kind of shitty. Kids with ADHD don't lose their imaginations with medication, they're just able to focus. That's not a bad thing.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This is not how C&H ended. They're still playing in the snow, exploring that "magical world". This shit is fake

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

If we're assuming Calvin has ADHD, then medication would theoretically help with imaginal creativity as kids with ADHD typically suffer (1)

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

In this area. The increases in daydreaming in ADHD are often a form of checking out, rather than engaging with imagination. (2)

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I was going to ask if this was an actual C&H strip, but then saw Watterson's name on the last panel. I've never seen this one.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

It’s not his, this has been edited

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Watterson did not draw this strip.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

YOU MEAN THE INTERNET LIED TO ME?! I should have known. Watterson doesn't seem like he'd do this.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

i doubt anyone with adhd would relate. this is glorifying the illness

6 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 8

I don’t think this was about adhd.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Idk man, I focused and chilled out yeah, and it def helped my grades, but I felt so lifeless, I was in cheerleading and was known for 1/3

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Being very happy, engaging, and outright strange. I would skip down hallways and just try to spread as much weird love as I could to 2/3

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My peers. Then I went on the meds, and on most days it was incredibly hard to even smile. But for sure for my act together. 3/3

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i understand, my meds at first were way too strong and i experienced lots of side effects but its normal when you start to experience them

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a medicated ADHD person, can confirm. Nothing like this. People misunderstand and misrepresent the meds effect constantly.

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

It affects people in significantly different ways, also the older stuff had more widely exhibiting side effects. What's your age?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Late 20’s. Been on Ritalin, adderall, vyvanse, and a couple other. Ritalin was the worst, and gave me a motor tic.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

On the contrary, people with genuine illnesses wouldn’t be dissuaded by this, often meds allowing to finally enjoy things they once couldn’t

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Cont.)For the population that are misdiagnosed or overly medicated, this is cathartic as they can related to it from childhood or as parents

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

taking meds isnt like losing childhood magic its more like finally recieving clarity and focus

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Things aren’t more fun when you’re off meds, they’re more likely to fall apart. Meds help and not hurt. This comic shows them hurting.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

If the meds are destroying your ability to imagine and have fun, then your dosage/type is fucked up and you need to fix it. It is not a

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Normal or desired effect. That kid with serious ADHD? They know as well as anyone how badly it fucks with them, they just can’t stop it. The

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Medication gives them the ability to retain control of themselves. When I was a kid with ADD, there were so many things I wanted to do that

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I just couldn’t simply. Once they got the dosage right, suddenly I could actual do them without wandering off half way through.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I kinda hate this because Bill Watterson did not want his work used in any way but his. That’s why there is no official C&H merchandise.

6 years ago | Likes 405 Dislikes 5

That’s selfish and douche and selfish douches don’t get their way if I can help it!

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 15

He was opposed to a cartoon, he was opposed to merchandise, but he never mentioned fan fiction. This is fine, other than the signature.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

This whole thing ought be taken down, out of respect for the artist. Sometimes censorship is necessary.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 8

Down voters don’t get it. Intellectual property rights are their livelihood.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

His name should at least be removed

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's better than a bumper sticker of Calvin pissing on something.

6 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 3

Absolutely hate those. L

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah those don’t have his permission either.

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I have a bumper sticker that simply says "CALVIN PEEING ON THAT THING YOU LIKE"

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

I always wanted one of Calvin peeing on another Calvin, who was peeing back on the first one.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

I can't believe he would have done this. I see his signature but I had like ALL his collections and I don't remember this. Hope it's fake.

6 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 5

Of course he didn’t do this.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

It definitely is.

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

It's fake, don't worry.

6 years ago | Likes 147 Dislikes 0

Thanks!

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Unless you're Bill, that's not why you hate it. You hate it because it's an unreasonably effective attempt at destroying the beauty of C&H

6 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 40

No. I respect the man and I respect his wishes for his work. This is using Watterson’s art to push someone else’s agenda.

6 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 3

So? No art is above parody.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also kinda yes. It’s heavy handed and antithetical to C&H’s entire being. “But that’s the point!” You might say, well I don’t care. It sucks

6 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

I do care, and it still sucks.

And then he made Bacon.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Even this is bullcrap. A better ending would have been the edit I saw where Calvin goes "Okay, done" and then they go out to play.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This isn't how ADHD medicine works for children. It does not impede imagination. Actually it helps us sort out our thoughts for make believe

6 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

I don't think it's trying to convey that his imagination is being impeded, but simply that he's no longer distracted by his surroundings

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Look. I understand the sentiment. But I have ADD, and taking meds lets me actually function. It's not all imagination and fun times. 1/

6 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 0

Losing stuff right after you had it in your hand. Feeling physically uncomfortable when you have to concentrate on a task for more than 2/

6 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

My favorite one is putting my water bottle in the freezer and forgetting it.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I walked out to my car the other day with a can of WD-40. I'd meant to return it to the supply closet and totally forgot I was holding it.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Atleast you didn't apply it twice before realising. But yeah when it comes to minor tasks like that. They mess up the most easily.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Drifting off in the middle of a conversation because something else caught my attention - and don't get me started on being made fun of. 3/

6 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

ADD meds ARE overused. No question. But for those of us who need them, they're a lifesaver.

6 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

You're a good person. Thank you for sharing that. I don't particularly like taking my meds every day, but I know I need it.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Thanks dude. Good luck. It's not easy.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hahahahaha. I just realized I ADD'd myself in the middle.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I don’t take mine everyday either- but I pay $150 a month in copays and do take it most days and am so grateful.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a medicated ADHD kid/adult, this is not relatable. Self awareness of my loud voice and habitual interruption of others saved me socially.

6 years ago | Likes 426 Dislikes 14

I don’t think this comic was about adhd. I think it’s more about hallucinations and emotional excitability.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Preach brother

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I started meds this year as an adult. I am a life long daydreamer. And I still am. I just don’t daydream as much when I should be working.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

This ruined my boyfriend mentally when he was a child. He can't remember much but his Mom said he became a recluse...

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Just remember: What others see isn’t what we feel. I went recluse a bit because I accepted that my behavior caused others to hate me.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This was when he was younger; Jr high age. He's better now but it does bug him when his mom asks "remember when", cause he can't.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah this isn't accurate. My pills help me focus on my writing and not get distracted. I write fantasy and it doesn't inhibit me at all.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Stuff like this whole "pills are evil" nonsense is over simplifying really complicated matters.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ADHD meds massively improved my life. i hate when people act like my illness isn't real and that addressing the symptoms is somehow wrong.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I was medicated as a kid for adhd myself but it basically zombified me, little to no emotion. Stopped taking it in middle school. Now i'm >

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True. But to the adults, it seems so. A colleague of mine took his child of ADHD medication, because he came asking for it so that he...

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

... would not become strange again. This botjered my colleague a lot.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh god, now this kid I relate to. Being strange, and different for reasons you can’t understand. Years of trying to figure out why no one

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

could seem to like me. I would have killed to feel normal, just for a time. I’d make the opposite determination of your colleague...

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I understand you, snd I can understand his view as well. As so often, both sides are somehow valid...

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bill Watterson is the poster child for survivor bias.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

This!!!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Disagree. His comics were consistently funny. They still are to me. Others do not hold up so well.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

His comics being funny has nothing to do with what I said. He's a great comic artist and writer.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought the point you were making is that he is remembered as excellent, due to people only showing the few of his good works, ergo S.B.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, my point was that he encourages people to risk everything in the pursuit of impractical dreams because he succeeded though most fail.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah the only problem is is that not all kids being given ADHD medicine really need it

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Yeah, that is a problem. But I’m against any solution that makes it harder for genuine cases to get what they need.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I think there is more of an issue of overpresciption than under. I am sensitive as my son does not have ADHD but ex wanted him on meds

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a diagnosed ADHD I disagree. The “medicine” changed me, because “normal” me was broken. I hated it

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I hate my reliance on it, and moment to moment Im less happy. But overall, it still helps me. The real me was a beastly inconsiderate pest.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ADHD medicine (as an adult) deleted my personality.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Even deeper than this, I hesitated to try medication for years because of the stigma shown here. How much of my real self did I miss out on?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

As a counter point to this, it fucked me up pretty well. on it since childhood, off in highschool, on again as adult. It made me suicidal.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didnt realize it at the time because how does a kid describe that, and to who? didnt have a therapist or shit.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looking back at my life both my suicide attempts were when i was still on daily medication in high school.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is very sad to hear. I’m sorry. For me it was the social circumstances that case from being unmedicated that made me want to die.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thank medication for the fact that I made friends. And I thank my friends for giving me reasons not to end my life.

6 years ago | Likes 105 Dislikes 6

Win win

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lots of people with out ADHD interrupt people. Loud I totally feel, I had no voice control. But honestly I wasnt a fan of the meds 1/3

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My problems were many and varied. Most severe all stemmed from impulse control, and the meds gave me a half second to reconsider my actions

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I stopped taking meds in highschool, but from my memory the meds had no effect on my ability to imagine or play as a young child

6 years ago | Likes 142 Dislikes 1

I certainly never did. If fact, sitting down with a book became stunningly easy, and that stoked my imagination more than anything.

6 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 0

From purely anecdotal evidence of me talking to people, people had some *wildly* different reactions to ADD meds.

6 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

Listen, for every anecdote you got there's someone who doesn't amount to anything without it, and the opposite

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd love to say it isn't necessary ,or it is this cartoon, but it's not

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They used to make me go 100% mentally nonstop, so I would need numerous naps a day to try and recharge.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've had the same interactions, some people it's a miracle some people it make them a zombie

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

If it made them a Zombie they were probably misdiagnosed

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Absolute truth. I've got so many stories.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My bro has adhd, took meds, and he lost all of his personality. It was great for my ears, hard on my heart. He is no longer on those meds.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Did he lose it, or did he have control over his personality for the first time? I had no idea how I appeared to others before meds.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Probably was on the wrong type of medicine. Or perhaps needed a nonstimulant rather than a stimulant

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I didn't start taking it until an adult and it deleted my personality, too.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Really? I’d be curious to hear more description.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It gave me such focus that my wife had to touch me to shift my focus from watching tv. I couldn't hear her speaking. Normally not a problem.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is the reality. These other people are idealists

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

If you think I’m an idealist about meds, you’d be wrong. Still support them.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gotta say I think it is the other way. It has been an awakening experience to slowly find out that so many of my most (1/2)

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

(2/2) interesting and brilliant friends were on ADHD meds the whole time. Might be more people you know on them than you might expect
