It's true you don't read about any Orc-women in Middle-earth. And this in turn has helped the misconception that there were no Orc-women, and that Orcs just spring out of mud pits in the ground!

That was not Tolkien's intention, as is here presented.

In a letter to a Mrs. Munby, in 1962, Tolkien wrote:

"There must have been orc-women. But in stories that seldom if ever see the Orcs except as soldiers of armies in the service of the evil lords we naturally would not learn much about their lives. Not much was known."

This may mean that their women were rarely seen, as with Dwarf-women, or that they sometimes joined battle but were not identified, since they were either fighting or dead (art by Michał Sałata).

The Orcs as known from the Third Age were, in summary, created out of corrupted Elves and Men:

"...Orks had a mixed origin. Most of them plainly (and biologically) were corruptions of Elves (and probably later also of Men). (...) the Orcs were bred from some kind of Men ..."

~ HoME 10; Myths Transformed; IX + X (art by LordHannu)

Therefore Orcs reproduced just as do Elves and humans [who together are referred to as 'the Children of Ilúvatar']:

"Orcs had life and multiplied after the manner of the Children of Ilúvatar;"

~ Silmarillion; III; III (photo of nebelmotte by Moritz Jendral).

We have one example of parentage. In the Battle of the Five Armies the Orc leader was Bolg, the son of Azog (art by Matt Stewart). Dwarf lord Dain had slain Azog 142 years prior* and Gandalf warned his friends (TH; The Clouds Burst):

"`The Goblins are upon you! Bolg of the North is coming. O Dain! whose father you slew in Moria.'"

I suspect female orcs were used as baby factories, so that Sauron's army could grow as fast as possible.

Sauron had orc girlfriends. Middle Earth only knew Sauron as a cruel despot, but he could be quite sweet and tender to his lovers.

Female orcs eventually settled down in Florida’s trailer parks and began procreating with guys named Kyle.

Instead of cribs, they use a mound of cigarette butts and empty beer cans. Of course consumed through all trimesters.

#5 "The Mother of the Wendol. She they revere…"

So, if Azog was killed 142 years before, that means that Bolg was AT LEAST 142 years old (roughly). Orcs had quite long lives.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Presumably they could not become much older than so, an in such a society few likely ever even became 140, but aye, it’s a fair age for them

Orc women are indeed ugly as sin... I've been to Aberdeen and, apparently, that is where they reside.

Tolkien wrote really good papers on old english literature too. Even his factual writing was fascinating and engaging.

A woman I went to University with played one of the Orc extras in the movies. Don’t know which Orc though.

I always figured they fought alongside the male orcs, and that they're largely indistinguishable from males except upon close inspection. ew

Time to clap some orc cheeks

I've always wondered - are the orcs evil by nature? Could their evil side be un-warped if anyone had the inclination?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, as in their evil is theological, not biological. Morgoth's evil will is infused in their being; without it they wouldn't be Orcs. 1/2

Eru [God] may, likely noother, and likely will when the world is recreated to be free from corruption after Dagor Dagorath ["Ragnarok"] 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Didn't tolkein flip flop a little on orc origin? I think later he decided that they couldn't have come from corrupted elves

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Orc origin is a lore quagmire, there's lots of version. At end he tried to write Elves out of it, but as that cause other problems (with 1/2

chronology etc) the door was kept open. All taken together the most reasonable conclusion is an Elven start but in time most Men as source.

Why did Jackson not go the same route with the hobbits. Green screen everything?

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

As someone who’s saw the original LOTR movies in theater, I think the hobbit movies were 10x better. No bitch Frodo for one thing

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 9

Though I never read any of the books so I have no bias in that regard, I just enjoyed the hobbit for what it was and it was awesome

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 9

The short answer: extreme studio meddling

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Also PJ had no creative juice left, he literally just made up stuff as he went along.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

But it’s important to remember that he KNEW this & refused the job initially. When del Toro quit it was either step up or watch the film die

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You have managed the impossible @op . With your first paragraph, you have made an already entertaining series even more delightful.
