Isn't an upside down flag an indication that there's something wrong with the country? That seems like it would be a good symbol. In any case, waving a foreign nation's flag when protesting immigration policies is the dumbest idea. That's just fuel to the fire; saying you are an invading foreign force, not locals who want to be part of this country. I'm sure they don't mean to imply this, but it is too easy to read it this way.

Good point tbh. I remember feeling uncomfortable seeing my own flag (UK) being waved around, because I'd begun to associate it with UKIP rather than my own country. Associating my own country's flag with nationalist nutbags probably isn't a good sign. Perhaps would've made them seem like less of an accepted majority if they weren't the only ones doing it.

As an American living in the UK for the past 20 years I was surprised to see almost no flags flying over here. My husband explained this same reason to me and I felt quite sad. Of course, when England is in a big football match they appear everywhere for a while! XD

In general, we need to stop letting magats define terms. Defund the police was doomed from the start because we actually need some police. It should have been support the police. Support them by letting social workers help with the social work aspect of the job. Slogans and first impressions matter.

Societies do need police - people who are trained and authorised to deal with violence and who investigate crimes. If you don't have them, your only recourse is self-defence and vigilantism. That your police is lacking the qualities it has doesn't invalidate the entire concept. Arguing that it does comes from the same place as Republicans arguing that government shouldn't be involved in certain things, ignoring that those parts of government were deliberately sabotaged in order to fail.
