Tilt
A shot where the camera moves continuously Up to Down or Down To Up. A vertical panning shot. A tilt to the sky is traditionally a last shot in a movie.
Top Shot
A shot looking directly down on a scene rather than at an angle. Also known as a Birds-Eye-View shot.
Tracking Shot
A shot that follows a subject be it from behind or alongside or in front of the subject. Not as clumsy or random as a panning shot, an elegant shot for a more civilized age.
Two Shot
A medium shot that depicts two people in the frame. Used primarily when you want to establish links between characters or people who are beside rather than facing each other.
Whip Pan
A shot that is the same as a pan but is so fast that picture blurs beyond recognition. Usually accompanied by a whoosh sound.
Zoom
A shot deploying a lens with a variable focal length that allows the cinematographer to change the distance between camera and object without physically moving the camera.
Extreme Close Up
An extreme close-up contains one part of a character's face or other object. This technique is quite common in horror films, particularly the example above. This type of shot creates an intense mood and provides interaction between the audience and the viewer.
Crane Shot
A crane shot is often used by composers of films to signify the end of a film or scene. The effect is achieved by the camera being put on a crane that can move upwards

@ValidLikeSalad Tracking Shot Description:
mynamesbryson
Coulda used ass-to-ass for top shot example.
NellyMr
Is that zoom not called a crash zoom? Tarantino uses them a lot
GlitterSpurtingOutMyUrethra
That particular one, yeah. More in-your-face stylish (suits Tarantino)
MostValuableDickbutt
Right, but what's it called when the guy goes for the money shot but accidentally hits the cameraman?
MyNeighbourTylerDurden
Again with omitting the sauce. Dude. http://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/film-studies-101-camera-shots-styles
andergriff
this makes me appreciate cinematography a lot more
keppay
There is a YouTube channel called Every Frame A Painting about cinematography. You'd love it
Bananakin
The more you read about film the more you appreciate it. It is not an easy thing, really.
ThisIsGod
Yea, I thought film was easy until I actually looked into it. I always thought, "Well you turn a camera on, point, and shoot"
yomancs
You can tell a movie is shit if they zoom but when they get right like the gentleman said its fucking gold!
MissMindyx
filming 103?

I love tracking shots so much.

no pan?
msoctobereve
Simon peg seems to use a lot of that whip pan, which i appreciate.
ThisIsGod
I didn't realize he was a director.
FailToImpress
He isn't, as far as I know, all the popular Brit films he's been in were directed by Edgar Wright.
CosmicTony
Edgar Wright uses a lot of Whip Pan, Simon therefore by association is in a lot of Whip Pans :p
krytenofsmeg
Edgar Wright is a massively underestimated force in film-making. The guy is a legend.
MyFartsHitMyBalls
This is the kind of technically correct I love. Thank you.
msoctobereve
What films did he make, as i am american lame

Is the last one from Sherlock?

Mr Darcy fucks shit up
FailToImpress
One-taker, oner, or single take. If I remember it correctly the scene was probably shot with a Steadicam to allow for the smooth movement.
walkernotskywalker
@OP can you explain how they did the slo-mo/freeze frame scene from The Other Guys?
walkernotskywalker
To be more specific, the scene in the bar
ValidLikeSalad
its done with several cameras facing the scene while simultaneously recording giving a bullet time effect http://imgur.com/bZmLb7U
walkernotskywalker
That's awesome, thanks!
toffitoff
+ Drone shot. Simple panning or tilting from 10-80 meters above the ground. Giving you the unique feeling "omg they used a drone in this".
Sprixxen
Unpopular opinion? That helicopter shot at the end of SW:FA was weird. It's like JJ couldn't control himself at the end.
IAmEpicWin
Or, you know, the bad ass drone opening sequence they filmed for that last Bond movie which would have been impossible without drones
IAmEpicWin
Or, you know, the bad ass drone opening sequence they filmed for that last Bond movie which would have been impossible without drones
toffitoff
I'm not against the use of drones. Just the extreme overuse we have today. If you do it right it should be good, that goes for anything.
IAmEpicWin
I totes mcgotes agrew

Agree, that is

Zoom is a big no no in cinematography. But when it works, it's soooo good!
zeitelement
zoom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvrVFb-RIQc
KateUptonsNipples
My favorite is Napoleon Dynamite's bike scene
Sheepyhead
Edgar Wright does it pretty well
u2bist
Except slow zoom, which is used all the time to draw us into what is happening or being said.
TheDauphin
There are no rules in film, only sins

ding
BearsBeetsBananas
Zoom + expressions is probably the thing that made the office so successful.
scabab
its totally acceptable in the ENG, docu, and docu-style world. just not so in cinema other than for kitsch effect or done in a subtle way.
BearsBeetsBananas
The American version. I don't understand the English version at all.
RIPBillHicks
Well you're probably not English so wouldn't
PraiseJeebus
I feel like Bollywood movies completely ignore this rule.
Thisisheavydoc
It reminds me of old 70s tv shows; when depicting the building that the next scene takes place in.
skautkurt
Only few films accomplish a stylish zoom. Like the ones in the flying scenes in TFA. Dang, those were amazing!
wuhdee
"Bitches... please!" - Sam Raimi, probably.

donkmykong
This movie is absolutly awesome, but this is a good exemple on how tacky and weird it looks! :p
wuhdee
"It looks groovy" - Sam Raimi, probably.
donkmykong
Hahaha yes!
svu9051
Care to explain why?
harassmentford
scabab
its a matter of association. it was overused in the 80s and 90s, so now it looks tacky.
moxymox
For awhile it was overdone. It's best to use sparingly or to visually refer to that era when it was overdone (see: Tarantino).
svu9051
So, the affect itself isn't bad, instead it was overused? In what film era was it overused?
Rantaf
Effect*
temerairewindragon
Well, actors are all about affect.

'60s and '70s
noobule
There's an amazingly awful soap-opera style zoom+pan in 2004's Troy that had all my friends laughing in a 100% serious moment
CobraFlyingAnA10DroppingSpidersBecauseScrewYou
Sauce?
noobule
I looked for it, I wish I had it. But I'm not about to download all of Troy just to get that little clip.
xDownSetx
Was it when Hector was leaving the gates to fight Achilles?
noobule
Not sure. It was in the first half of the film, Agamemnon (I think) says something to provoke Achilles as he's walking up some stairs
CobraFlyingAnA10DroppingSpidersBecauseScrewYou
Dang. Well, you tried.
Rips4w
Hopefully you didnt all spill brandy on your ascots.
keioto
Who drinks brandy at the Cinema, it's clearly time to enjoy cognac.
liekifucrievytim
No, but I dropped my paté. :'(
Rips4w
Are you ok?
KeystoneGray
Tarantino is a god at this.
moxymox
I don't think it's godly, but his consistent aesthetic allows the use of this.
FailToImpress
Wes Anderson does it really well as well
furiousfish
It's basically his way of saying "fuck the rules".
LookAtAllTheFucksIGive
I don't think he cares enough to say that out loud. We all know he's thinking it though.
IntelligentHippo
tarantino is a god at many things, including this
ThisIsGod
I love his movies, but that man masturbates to his own success too much.
RelaxedGrandfather
Same
Cereaza
Yeah, no one cares. If Kubrick was less of a recluse, there'd be less worship of him. But it doesn't make a difference. The film is the film
ThisIsGod
I don't think so, I think Kubrick worship comes from his style of directing and quirks on the set.
gewalt
dont kid yourself, you would too if you were him
ThisIsGod
Well yea, but what I meant is that he's loud about it.
