Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan

If you're a fan of Game of Thrones and Fullmetal Alchemist, I have the perfect book recommendation for you. Brian McClellan made an epic trilogy that has almost everything you could ask for in a series. The best part is that it's FINISHED and you don't have to wait around for the next book. Any sort of spoiler I mention here is covered in the first two chapters of the book so no worries.

Field Marshal Tamas (pictured) stages a coup much similar to the French Revolution. Executing the royalty for living such lavish lives while leaving the country to rot, Tamas hold a military dictatorship while he works with a group of powerful people to form a democracy.
Having word that the kingdom of Ardo has fallen, a neighboring country declares war, leaving Tamas to 'George Washington' the fuck out of Adro and fight a war while forming a new nation.

McClellan's series features three main types of supernatural beings:

Privileged: AKA State Alchemists. They use gloves with runes on them to bend the elements (Fire,Earth,Water,Air, Energy). Every nation uses them for their military and they have substantial political power (If you could blow shit up, you would too).

Powder Mages

Gunpowder freaks. They can sense gunpowder, ignite any gunpowder within a radius of themselves and injecting gunpowder gives them enhanced abilities (increased strength, heightened senses, etc.). Needless to say they snort this shit on the reg. Tamas uses these people as his personal military cabal.

Knacked

Basically X-Men mutants with one 'meh' teir power - Never need to sleep, always tell when someone is lying, photographic memory, etc.

Pic related: one of the knacked is a wise-cracking, chain-smoking bodyguard who never sleeps.

Kresimir's Promise

Before finishing off the Cabal's Privileged, their dying words were "Remember Kresimir's promise". Wanting to cover all bases, Tamas hired cheif inspector Adamat (I picture Bryan Cranston for the role) to investigate the meaning behind this promise. Unfortunately, this case has him running across a war-torn country and getting him in WAY over his head.

A book series that does not disappoint

While you may not be emotionally attached to any characters, each chapter is fast paced and holds some AMAZING battles. The series is a fun story with entertaining characters, incredible fights, and a suspenseful plot. If you're looking for something to read while waiting for The Winds of Winter, say no more.

This has been on an off my audible wishlist for a year or so. I'll give it a shot once I finish some of the non-fantasy books I'm reading.

I read this series. Author has a bunch of one off books too set in the world. It so good every now and then I check for a new novel.

I love this trilogy, and I think the author is currently writing a new series in the same world.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

YES! It continues to sadden me that people don't take my advice and read this. One of the best original fantasies in a while.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Let them come upon us with all their fury, because these hounds at our heels will soon know we are lions!” Tamas speeches give me shivers

Well, here's another series for the list of things I'll read the moment I get through the Witcher.

I cannot tell you how much I relate to this post. You speak to truth and then 1000 times over.

Brian McClellan is also a real decent person who personally responds to his fans.

I legit picked up this book earlier today before wondering if it's any good. I didn't end up getting it. Now I'll be going back and get it.

You have peaked my interest. I just finished the Night Angel trilogy and needed something to fill in the void

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Brent Weeks (author of the Night Angel trilogy) has a second series called Lightbringer that's still in progress, which I enjoy as well

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm beyond excited to see this series get the recognition it deserves. Personally, I enjoyed it much more than Rothfuss' work.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's a great series! Excellent characters, well written, smart plot, well done action! Excellent read throughout!

This post is not written in a manner suitable for people who arent familiar with the material. it will be confusing. the books are good btw

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

when recommending stuff, one has to remember one is reaching out to people outside of the circle without inate knowledge of the work.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I'd love to read it but can't afford $10 per book on kindle

Spoiler Warning Favorite Part of These Books

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At the end of book one, god descends from heaven to put all things right, and one of the powder mages shoots him in the fucking face.

Can we do an imgur book club? Anyone can post book recommendations and title it "Imgur Book Club:" followed by the title or series

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

God damn it OP! I already had a stack of books to read and now I need to add these to the pile!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What up Morty!! Congrats on fp. Here's your up vote

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aww, gee. Thanks Rick!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Buuurp no problem.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's Mistborn meets the Wheel of Time. Less than the sum of its parts, imo, but it's fun.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I don't really see the similarity to either. There is no "hero of destiny" or poor kid that grows up to be a great hero.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In terms of the magic and world-building.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

+1 for Mistborn! Love that series! (and was definitely thinking it sounded similar)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Any Book fans here waiting more on Patrick Rothfuss then George Martin to get the next book out, or is it just me?

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

He's too busy playing D&D... But you can also just watch that, in the meantime. https://youtu.be/j_fGKY44DaI

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Strap in it is going to be a long wait either way.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I gave up on Rothfuss. It's been long enough that a I'm forgetting a lot of details anyway.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Jesus 10 bucks on kindle? Almost cheaper to get the real thing.

9 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 1

I enjoyed the first book but wasn't prepared to pay this for the others.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hence why ebook sales have stalled.

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Seriously I better hear amazing reviews from several people and see it with 1000 reviews on Amazon before I'm ponying up that much dough.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Have you read Rothfuss' books? The few people I know that level read Mclellen prefer the Powder Mage Trilogy, all three of us.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have you read the Stormlight Archives, and if so, did you think they were better or worse than NotW? I want to know your scale :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your actually the fourth person to mention that series to me in the past week. I guess I have to go read it now.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's good! One of my favorites. Try Mistborn too if you want more. I enjoy everything by Brandon Sanderson tbh

Have all of the powder mage books on 1st edition. Excellent fantasy but some of the characters are a little Mary Sue and indestructible

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

That's what I first thought when I read the above.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Indestructible, maybe. Flawless? Ehhhh... Didn't just about everyone in this have a major failing at some point?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I really enjoyed it, the tropes never bothered me. Very much looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not familiar with the very Mary Sue trope, though I've read the series. Care to explain with an example?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

If you've played the God of War series, Kratos (in his later games) turns into a Mary Sue.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mary Sue: a character made to be so perfect and "likeable" that it is just awful and drags the rest of the story and characters down with it

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A Mary sue is a character who has no flaws and as a result is shallow and unrelatable. An example would be James Bond.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

it's more than that, said character also solves everything with asspulls. Like a soldier that suddenly becomes perfect outta nowhere.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

interesting, could I use your argument of Bond being a mary sue for Wolverine. what do you think?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

James bond is SO FLAWED! Alcoholic, death wish, sex addict, pseudo dissocial disorder...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But storywise he's perfect. James Bond is a Mary Sue on purpose, and it's done well.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i guess i misunderstand. does that mean he'll always escape or beat the bad guy? D Craig's Bond gets conned, fucks up critical decisions...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He was sexist too. My favorite james bond quote is "The woman should have one drink for every three of the man."

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

SPOILERS - Tamas always seems to pick the correct military strategy and only dies after a ludicrous amount of damage 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

For future reference, it might help to bury spoilers in a child comment rather than top level with just with a "SPOILERS" label.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Only that isn't true and a central part of the story is that he's betrayed and his plan blows up in his face.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The woman (can't remember her name) survives a building falling on her with no real explanation, maybe the god saved

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

They do explain it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and Taniel survives literally anything, the only character that doesn't give off an air of near perfectness is Adamat, the detective

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Taniel has a reason why he survives, Ka-Poel. I'm hoping Mclellen has a book planned to tell her story. Adamat was the shit though.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

but as a note, loved the books despite all this

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This is also explained and he also screws up and ends up in a world of pain.
