Been on a hard downward spiral for the past year. Kept telling myself I can stop whenever I want. Turns out I can't do it alone. Really want to stop drinking so reached out to AA. Have a meeting set up, online meetings and support in place.

Edit: wow! I'm totally humbled by all your support and kind words. I really feel like I'll make it with support like this!

Sucks at first. Awesome new normal sets in.

Welcome! You’re never alone in this and introduce yourself to lots of people when you go :)

This has nothing to do with you, but I never realized this kid was eating sand until this post...

Going on 2 years drug and alcohol free. You got this. If you need another person to talk to I'd be happy to. Good luck. One day at a time.

Way to go!! You are on your way!

Face to face with other ackahalics works best. But what would I know after 32 years clean and sober.

AA has a poor success rate. If it doesn't work don't blame yourself just seek evidence based care.

This is the point im reaching now. Know i need help but scared to reach out cuz i know it's gonna be hard, messy journey.

Try a single AA meeting. It took me MONTHS to get the nerve to walk in that door. But once I did it was indispensable to my recovery.

It will not be easy but it will be worth it. Always be vigilant. No complacency allowed! Many on here are pulling for you! Yeah you!!!!

Awesome!!!

We believe in you!

Stay strong OP. Remember. No matter what happens, keep trying.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Agreed! You may fall of the wagon, but sometimes wagons are a rough ride, and the road is bumpy. Focus on getting back on, not the fall.

You got me if you need to talk

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

One thing that helped me ALOT with the withdrawals and anxiety, CBD. It's a Godsend when it comes to your nerves. Make sure its a good brand

This.

I think I would like AA more if it wasn't so quasi religious. Feels too cultish

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

You don’t have to believe in God. The higher power is one of your own understanding.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I went as an atheist and found the community didn’t push. I was able to take what I needed, leave the rest. The fellowship is what counts.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Also once I saw how many people truly TRULY need an outside force to guide them I saw the value in the God slant.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just don't drink today. One day at a time.

@OP focus on “not right now”

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why... why would someone downvote encouraging a person trying to fight an addiction disorder.

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

We should always support people wanting to get healthy and fighting a disease.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Thank you. It is a disease, my friend.

@Dav0sSeaworth is absolutely right. That's where I struggle off-and-on: Day 1 is hard. Day 2 is too. Day 3 is a crapshoot. Day 4 is where...

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

...I make the hardest decision: reward, because (seeming) moderate success? Or acknowledging that I CAN do this? Shoot...crap...

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It was all a crapshoot for me until the shakes stopped.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Heroin helped me quit drinking and smoking

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Just like sucking D helped you get over your wife leaving?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Sucking D helped me learn one more experience I can include in a fun and reciprocative sex life.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh my good gracious.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Couldn’t help it. Noticed he makes snarky comments about heroin on a lot of sobriety posts

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Ha ha, substance addiction is hilarious!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Since no one else mentioned it, AA will try to get you to surrender to God. I think it's important to recognize the hard work your journey 1

6 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 6

Well you got that wrong.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

Agreed. AA is fine. It's not the only recovery program in town, and it's not the best. It'll do if it's what you've got, though.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think quitting requires MORE responsibility, not less (ie, surrendering to something). Help is important though. Find it where u can.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ahead holds. When you defeat this beast known as addiction I want you to know that it was you and you alone that slayed it.

6 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 5

They don't try to force it on you any more. It's part of the steps, but they acknowledge you don't HAVE to believe.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

I have been sober in AA for over six years. However, I cannot attempt to help people on this forum unless I want to get a downvote beatdown.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Wrong. Been in aa ten years. Either you don’t get the point or have had bad teachers.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Pride is dangerous for addicts. "God" does serve a purpose in recovery, but it doesn't have to be a conventional god
