Step 1

First, you need to cut both sides of the tire. You have to cut as deep so you can hear your blades scratching on the metal net beneath the coating.

Als erstes ritzt du den Reifen auf beiden Seiten ein. Dass du tief genug eingeritzt hast, hörst du, wenn dein Messer über das Metallgitter unter dem Gummi kratzt.

Step 2.1

Now you got to slice across the tire.

Das ganze dann nochmal quer.

Step 2.2

To get easier access you do another cut about 1 inch next to the first one.

Um einen Anfang zu finden, ritzt du ein zweiten Querschnitt ca. 1-2cm neben deinen Ersten.

Step 3

Now you can peel off your first strip.

Jetzt kannst du einen dünnen Streifen abschälen.

Done!

Step 4

Now you can begin to peel of a bigger strip.

Jetzt kannst du anfangen einen großen Streifen abzuschälen.

Step 4.1

Caution!

Try to always cut as deep as you can to avoid messing it up like I did here.

Versuche immer möglichst tief zu schneiden, damit dir nicht wie mir größere Stücke im Streifen fehlen.

Step 5

Now you paint the outline of your shoe on the strip so you know where to step on later.

Jetzt zeichnest du dir mit einem Edding den Umriss deines Schuhs auf den Gummistreifen, damit du später weisst, wo du drauftreten musst.

Step 6

I used the paper to coat the sole and the stripe.

Mit dem kleinen Block habe ich den Kleber auf Sohlen und Gummistreifen verteilt.

Let it dry.

The glue has to dry for about 10-15 minutes.

Der Kleber braucht 10-15 Minuten zum Trocknen.

Step 7

After that you put on your shoes and step inside the outlines on the strips.
Use your weight to press the two pieces together for about 5 minutes.

Anschliessend schlüpfst du in deine Schuhe und stellst dich in deine Markierungen auf den Gummistreifen.
Nutze dein Gewicht um die beiden Teile für ca. 5 Minuten aneinanderzudrücken.

Step 8

Let it rest for some minutes before you begin to cut off the unnecessary.

Lass das ganze noch ein bisschen festtrocken bevor du beginnst das überstehende Gummi abzuschneiden.

Finished!

Did that for the first time. Took me about 6 hours.
Total cost about 2€ for cutting blade and glue.

Hab das selbst zum ersten Mal gemacht und ca. 6 Stunden gebraucht.
Die Messerklinge und die Menge an Kleber dürften um die 2€ gekostet haben.

Pebbles stuck in the gaps is gonna drive you nuts.

Now fix a tire with an old shoe.

Be sure to stick a penny in-between the tread to see if you need new shoes.

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

That tire looked perfectly fine to me before you cut it.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In Germany we have a law saying that the profile of tires is not allowed to be less than 1.6 millimeters (=0.06 inch). Seems okay though...

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Aren't tyres more expensive than shoes?

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Very. But old, worn/broken/discarded tires are common and cheap/free.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Those are skate shoes, are you going to skate in those? Holy shit, the traction is gonna rip you foot off...lol.

12 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

hmm, maybe not that haha, but they're definitely gonna skate like shit with those thick ass tires for soles. No boardfeel whatsoever ha.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

exactly what I was thinking, tire traction on the board, lol

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lugers use those, they brake at 100KMPH+ with their feet so normal shoes wear down in a few runs. Some downhill skaters do too for footbrake

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if you commit a crime, leave footprints in the dirt. Forensics will go apefuck..was it a man? a car? a walking car? OMAGAD WE JUST DONT KNOW

Haha, I get the sentiment, but to me it would be a more eastern european thing to do. It's too inefficient for most germans, I would think.

You're tied for my favorite comment on this post.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Everyone is talking shit, but I see a business opp here. You get to keep old tires out of land fills and send repurposed shoes to needy kids

12 years ago | Likes 202 Dislikes 2

where are tires allowed in landfills?Tires are recycled (w/ mixed result depending on the plant and source materials) for rubber mulch.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I live in a small town in the midwest, our local, and all surrounding landfills are filled with them. Our woods are littered with them also.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is already a thing- Men make sandals out of old tires on the streets of Uganda.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

shit already exists.. search for skating soles..

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You mean a charity opp. Businesses make money

Only so much you can reuse. The rest is tossed out. I used to turn ithem inside out to make planters. Last for years.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I work for a company called solerebels.com Check it out

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I'm dumb anyway, but how do you deal with all the scraps from cutting soles to fit?

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

http://www.etsy.com/search?q=tire%20sandals&ship_to=US it's been done and nobody wants them

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Pirelli is selling expensive shows advertising that the soles are like their tires.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nobody wants to pay top dollar for sandals made from old rubber* If one were to donate them to third world countries, even as charity, it

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

could be beneficial to all parties involved by reducing waste, providing a product, and helping the needy.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, you've got the idea. Make it happen.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, those are also REALLY ugly.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

in 3rd world countries.

12 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

That looks like a pretty new tire...

12 years ago | Likes 652 Dislikes 7

That's what I'm saying..

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe had a nail in it. They probably don't patch flats.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

that was my first thought

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Seconded.

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

My first reaction was that only a German would call that an 'old' tyre.

12 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Most likely had a nail too close to the sidewall and couldn't be patched.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I'm going to tell myself the tire had non-repairable sidewall damage... :-\

12 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Tires have a lifespan of five to seven years from date of manufacture, even if they are never used. The rubber ages, the oils and binding 1

12 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

chemicals dry out and the tire loses flexibility. A tire’s ability to mould itself around the texture of the road is what makes it grip. 2

12 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Simply put, no flex, no grip. Tread depth does not contribute to grip.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

In Germany, getting caught with that tire on a wheel would cost a high fee. The Germans sell "old" tires to countries with less strict rules

12 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 1

What do you mean? it looks like it has tons of tread left... or are you interpreting "old" as in it is unused but aged?

12 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

Yes, most likely it is too old, the skid depth looks good.

12 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

what's the age limit on tires in Germany? here in Connecticut, maybe the US, 12 years is the legal limit

12 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I don't believe there is a specific age limit in US, my understanding its purely a condition thing.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

HELL YEAH CT!

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The profile also has to be at least 1.6 mm deep for summer tires.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

The German TÜV forbids tires older than 10 years usually, it is the safety institution that gives you the go to use your car.

12 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Literal translation: I ruined a $100 tire to fix some $30 shoes.

12 years ago | Likes 253 Dislikes 4

With $3 glue

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Let see, tire is a pretty strong rubber. Also it can be used several times. Also you can make a business with this.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unless the tyre was old (they degrade and shouldn't be used after 6 years or so) or punctured etc. For the right application this is OK.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you not see the 2 giant holes in the tire? Granted it may be able to be fixed but it is no longer a $100 tire

12 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 3

Correction, the $100 tire that needs a $5 patch.

12 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 2

A patch doesn't fix a tire in the same way a bandaid won't fix a hole in your hand.

12 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

Don't be an idiot, the patch protects the tire's wound so that it's internal repair system can make it good as new.

12 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 4

Why?

12 years ago | Likes 855 Dislikes 37

I assume he's a longboarder. They break by pressing their shoes flat to the ground. At speed you wear the soles off very fast.

Making cheap brake shoes for street luge is done this way as well.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Longboarders do this all the time to avoid buying new shoes just because the sole ripped apart

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

As a longboarder, I was looking for this comment :)

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When I used to have more time to longboard, we did this so when bombing downhill you can use your foot as a brake and not kill your shoes.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not everyone can afford new shoes.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Because German.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't see what was wrong with that tire. It looks good to use to me...

He probably did it to get better MPG.

12 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Where is your sense of ADVENTURE!??

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He probably does a lot of walking, so the sole gets worn out a lot faster then one would like to replace shoes. Re-sole instead of replace.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Good traction in winter?

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In every other part of the world, this is common practice. It is better for your feet to continue to wear shoes that are broken in.

12 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

Every other part of the world? I have lived in 4 countries on three different continents and even Germany (ops language) and never seen this

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

I think LeonaLux means putting new soles on shoes in general. Extremely common in expensive, all leather shoes. Just not today's cheap-os.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 17

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

He also posted the cost of the repair in Euros. I'd say not living in the states is a pretty safe assumption. Plus, you know, the German.

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Exactly the question! Moreover..that tire looked FINE!!!

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looks like skateboarding damage. One can go through a sole in about a month. Repairing them is a helluvalot cheaper than buying a new pair.

12 years ago | Likes 178 Dislikes 4

Yeppers. Looks like resoling his footbraking shoe.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

tires are more expensive than shoes

12 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 4

Hey obviously didnt pay for the tire you turkey

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly what I was thinking. Those tires don't look like they've been driven on for too long, they still look relatively new

12 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Im pretty sure you can make more money in 6 hours than the price differences between shoes and a tire

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Shhhh... opportunity cost isn't a real thing.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but skating on a tire soled shoe could prove to be difficult....

12 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

Longboarding not skateboarding... you can acutally by brake soles to glue on your shoes for that.

12 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Is there any indication that he was long boarding? The wear on his shoes looks like skateboarding to me.

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Longboarders wear out soles faster due to usually more aggressive grip and overall more pivoting. Skateboarders usually wear the ssides.

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the top of his shoes look way to intact to me to be skateshoes. Plus as you said, it's pretty hard to skate on tires ;)

12 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

12 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
