Here is my build log for my custom Gear VR Cooling solution.

I really like how you get a decent VR experience for less than 100 bucks, but unfortunately my S6 edge heats up like crazy... So I decided to make a cooler for it for extended use. I went from being able to game for about 20 minutes to a full hour without overheating! Success!

Getting Started

I had a small 5v fan to use for this project, here I just laid it where I wanted it using my Mk.1 eyeballs.

First Holes

A bit of tape under the holes so I don't mark up the plastic too much.

First Holes Drilled

No turning back!

Stabilizing with the first two pegs.

To make sure the fan would fit, I stuck it back on and used the remaining holes as a guide for t

Bolts are in, circle traced.

Traced out the circle for the fan. I cut it out by drilling multiple holes around the perimeter and clipping the circle out with some cutters. Then I dremeled it smooth.

The

3.7 v lipo
500 mA 5 v converter
lipo charging circuit

All of these were originally purchased from Adafruit, but I pulled these from other projects that were collecting dust on my desk.

Test Placement

This setup had the battery hitting one of the posts when attached to the Gear VR.

Final Placement

I rearranged the components so they would all fit, I also cut a notch in the top so I could charge the lipo without removing the front plate. The washers were used for cable management, so I didn't have big globs of hot glue everywhere.

All components placed!

Here are all the components placed each tacked down with a dot of hot glue... can you see the problem though?

Attached

Here is where I notice that I forgot to add a switch... >.<

Bad switch placement

I had a really nice round switch that would have worked perfectly... but I put it in a place that caused it to hit the sides of the phone holder.... After measuring around, my switch wouldn't fit. Dang.

New Switch

Well I didn't want to drill a new hole, so I used the only switch I had left in it's place... it looks, bad. I will swap it out after my next trip to radio shack, maybe I can find a small round one to fit.

All done!

Front plate (not attached)

Attached and Charging

Here you can see the charging cable for the lipo, a small red led lets us know it's charging

"If I something something sits."

actually a great idea, only reason I havent got a vr for my s7 active was because of how warm it gets with extended use.

Thank you! I got the idea after seeing people use freezer gel packs to keep their phone cool, thought this was cooler! (pun intended)
